Hotel Jamal

Right in the centre of town on the main street, the friendly Hotel Jamal was probably the best hotel I stayed in during my time in Iraq, and also one of the cheapest. A large room with double bed (very unusual!), clean sheets, towels, satellite tv and a spotless bathroom with hot shower...all for 20,000 dinars a night.
(April 2010: £1 = 1774 dinars, 1 Euro = 1521 dinars, US$1 = 1168 dinars)

Nobody told me when I checked in, but in the morning when I said I was leaving and asked about onward transport, the receptionist asked why I wasn't having any breakfast...apparently that was included too, and involved a huge round piece of fresh Iraqi bread with cheese, jam, eggs and endless tea.

A: "Not true. After the Iraqi guards give you some tea, they might ask you where (in general) you plan on travelling. But specifics are not required at all."
