Galilee to Jerusalem

by agneszh

Shalom!

We will go to Sea of Galilee form Tel Aviv and back to Jerusalem. We plan to rent a car, is it possible to go back to Jerusalem from Galilee within one day? the tour line is Sea of Galilee - Nazareth - Yardenit - Jordan Vally(did not find it in map) - Beit Shean - Gideo Spring - Jerusalem?

Where is Church Nain? Is it far from Nazareth?

How much time people need to visit Nazareth? 2 hours or more?

todah! thank you!

What you are planning is unrealistic for one day. You either need to spend a night in the North or eliminate lots of sites. I assume you want to actually visit and enjoy your list of locations. To do it in one day would mean a drive past and wave out the car window--maybe stopping and running through one or two palces.

From Jerusalem to Nazareth is about a 2 - 2 1/2 hour drive. You probably want to see the Church of the Annunciation there -- an hour?

From Nazareth to Tiberias (and the Sea of Galilee) is about another 1/2 hour - 45 minute drive from Nazareth.

The Jordan River flows into and out of the Sea of Galilee, and you can see it at a number of spots nearby. The Jordan Valley is the area south of Tiberias, which you can drive through on your way back to Jerusalem (the road goes directly from The Sea of Galilee to Jerusalem through the Jordan Valley). It passes right next to Beit Shean.

Travel Tips for Nazareth

Nazareth in General

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

Nazareth is the largest city in the North District of Israel. The city is interesting because it is described in the New Testament as the childhood home of Jesus. That’s why it is a center of Christian pilgrimage. It has many shrines commemorating biblical events.

Nazareth was the home of Joseph and Mary and the site of the Annunciation according to the Gospel of Luke. Mary was told by the Angel Gabriel that she would have Jesus as her son.
Joseph and Mary resettle in Nazareth after fleeing to Egypt from their home in Bethlehem according to the Gospel of Matthew.
The differences and possible contradictions between these two accounts of the nativity of Jesus are part of the Synoptic Problem.

Nazareth – rock group

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

For those people who is already 50 or 60 years old the name of Nazareth is bringing back memory from far 1970th when the Scottish rock group Nazareth was very popular all over the world including even the USSR.

I grew up in atheism and, shame on me, I heard the name of Nazareth for the first time when I listened to the music of the Scottish group with such a strange name. I asked what their name meant and got an answer - it meant the name of a town where Jesus had spent his childhood… It was in far 1972.

I hope you can imagine young Sergey (future VT well-known member, haha!), listening to their music and dreaming to visit real Nazareth one day… Believe it or not - my dream has come true in spring of 2009.

Watch and listen to their Love Hurts, Sunshine and Holy Roller.

Far more than 4 weddings, and no funerals

by mafi_moya

Muslim communities generally seem to have lots of weddings. Or maybe it's just that they're very public community affairs and so a lot more noticeable. But even so, I'm sure Nazareth is trying to get in the Guinness Book of Records for the most weddings ever held in a single year!

In my first two months here, just in the two streets near my house there have been over ten weddings! Apparently late summer is the marriage season here but that still seems a pretty impressive rate! And it's not counting the ones on other streets but still within hearing distance. Barely a night goes by without the music blasting out and the endless beeping of car horns!

Get off the main streets, and WANDER

by Martin_S.

Nazareth, like the other biblical age towns in Israel has its wealth of hidden beauty, it is hidden in its back streets, those places where the tour guides do not take the tourist buses because they are too far from the stores they want you to purchase from...take your time, or rather take THE time to just wander around the old streets, who knows you may find a door that Rabbi HaNassi or Jesus walked through ....

Tzipori

by leffe3

Set on a hill with extesnive views of the surrounding Jezreal Valley, Tzipori is just a few miles north west of Nazareth and is the former 2nd Century BC capital of the Galillee.

Jewish, Roman and Crusader remains are to be found here, including a Roman amphitheatre, Roman villas, Crusader church. But Tzipori's crowning glory is the fabulous Roman mosaics that have been uncovered.
