Shoresh Hotel: Head for the Hills

Shoresh, a small hotel in the Judean Hills, is not the best I?ve ever been to. But if you want to wake up to the chirping of birds instead of the roar of traffic, like the idea of accommodations outside the city, and don?t mind d?cor that is a little shabby and out of date, this is not a bad option.

We spent a winter weekend here for a family get-together. In all, we were 21 people, a motley crew of couples, singles and families with children, coming from different parts of the country. Shoresh is a 15-minute drive from Jerusalem, and just off the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv highway.

You can stay in a standard room in the main hotel building, where the dining hall is, or choose a 2-room bungalow nearby. These bungalows are good for couples with 2-3 children, or a group of singles. Again, nothing fancy, but you get a small refrigerator and an electric kettle. There are newer country-style cabins a little way down the hill, which you have to specifically ask for. They seem to be very popular (they were booked solid on the weekend we were there). These units are called ?Yarok Bakfar? (Village Green) suites.

Our room had a sliding glass door opening onto a little porch surrounded by greenery and a beautiful view of the hills. The beds were okay. The color scheme was sort of tired and non-descript. The bathroom could have used some bleach around the tiling, but it served the purpose.

The dining hall is attractive, with huge arched windows overlooking the landscape. The food was quite good ? a cut above what I expected ? with many types of salads and desserts and several main dishes. As it was the middle of winter, the outdoor pool was closed. Instead, our afternoon activity consisted of a tour of Moshav Shoresh, the cooperative village that runs the hotel. An old-timer who has been living there for 56 years took us around and gave us some historical and geographical background.

Nearby attractions are the Masrek nature reserve, Rabin Park, Latrun Abbey, Mini Israel, Aquabella, Abu Ghosh, Kiftsuba and more.

I had a very nice enjoyable relaxing stay at the Lutheran guest House ( thanks Michele(JadedMuse) for the tip. It was perfect. The Lutheran guest house is very clean and comfortable. Its near Jaffa gate in a perfect location, through the old alleys of the old city..easy to navigate anywhere from here.
I dont think it is a hostel anymore because in July 06, they closed the dormorities.

Great location, great views....beautiful relaxing courtyard... also a nice little restaurant inside...where they served breakfast in the morning..and if you wanted, dinner( but that is $ 12 but you get a lot of food for the $12)

  • What was good about this Hotel was the fact that it was very clean. When we return that evening after a all day out, our room would be nice and clean with the bed made and clean sheets. If you want...extra $$$ for them to do your laundry. On the main floor there is the main dinner room with all the Israeli delicacy...from fish and boiled eggs in the morning to roast Lamb and not to forget fresh bake bread every hour on the hour.

My room at the King David
    Hotel, Jerusalem

I stayed at the King David Hotel for 2 nights. It was $ 306 per night. A salad ( i ordered for dinner with a coke) was $ 23. The hotel is very very nice, clean quiet, great location, but overrated i think. it was nice the nicest place i stayed at, but i would say its probably not worth more than maybe $ 250 a night max. It was very very nice, the walls are very thick so you dont hear anyone at all and you are guaranteed a restful comfy night, but i just think
$ 306 was a little too expensive. Good thing i stayed at the Lutheran guest house later in my stay to offset the costs!

Very quiet, very comfortable, clean, beautiful hotel

Bargain next door to the Citadel David Hotel: Jerusalem Lodgings

  • By jycbea on June 1, 2008
  • I stayed at the Citadel David - a big very nice Hotel - Great Breakfast; but had my daughter stay next door in one of the guest rooms of the Reform Jewish School next door.

It was clean, friendly, safe and had a very good breakfast included for $110.00/night. The room even has a kitchen.
Not as fancy as my hotel, but 1/6th the price!

It's a close walk to the Old City and convenient for transportation, etc.

Citadel Youth Hostel: The worst place I've stayed at after 23 countries

  • By suzy301 on August 14, 2009
  • Avoid the Citadel. I was just there in August and it was dirty, loud, and hot with people sleeping all over the place (main lounge and overcrowded on the roof) and the owner was very rude, demanding to be paid upfront for 5 nights and then refusing even a partial refund when we wanted to check out after 1 night.

Like a flop house, walking over sleeping bodies all over the place.
    Had a disgusting shared kitchen.

    Hotel Montefiore: Excellent mid-price hotel

  • This is a very good hotel for its price range--clean, on a small quiet street located in the New City, within walking distance of excellent cafes, restaurants shops, and about 15 minutes' walk from the Old City. Security is fine, though largely unnecessary. The rooms are mid-size, with a very comfortable bed (I had two singles), a useful desk, satellite cable television, and a clean, functional bathroom. You can control the heat and the linen service is fast and efficient. Service at the desk is helpful and prompt; they can book a tour of the Old City for you or order you a Nesher taxi to the airport. It's not a large hotel (6 floors) so the crowds at breakfast are not overwhelming and the Israeli breakfast spread, while not special, is fine for the purposes of all but the most effete traveller. the hotel offers WIFI--but not in your room. You have to sit in the lobby and you have to pay for it. This is not worth it as virtually every cafe in Jerusalem, including many that are near the hotel, have free WIFI.

The female security guard is easily the most beautiful guard I've ever seen!

Generally pleasant. Certainly recommendable. The area of the hotel however is not in a shopping district so nothing to buy or go to by walking. Shopping areas are about 15 mins. away by taxi.

Great buffet selection for both breakfast and dinner. Rooms are nice and comfortable but the hotel does not have separate smoking and non-smoking sections which is why we transferred to another room upon check-in because the first one they gave had a strong smoke odor.
