Located next to the King Solomon hotel on Keren haYesod is the Dan Panorama (formerly the Moriah Hotel). The parent company, Dan Hotels, has been accused of raising prices on foreign tourists so shop around before booking with Dan Hotels directly. It is just a short walk to the Rehavya, German Colony and Gonen (Katamon) neighborhoods. Though it is a bit of a walk into downtown Jerusalem or to the old city. I recall that the room we had was small, the lobby is small, the television was small and our view was of the ongoing construction behind the hotel of some luxury apartments. Frankly, there is not much light coming into the hotel, and it can be a bit of a depressing place if you don't get out. This is one of those places that can divide opinion! Having stayed there several times, I can understand why! Fantastic location, a few minutes walk from the Liberty Bell Gardens and part of a block of buildings that is covered in newish Jerusalem stone (so where shades when approaching the hotel :)). It's big, it's impersonal, it's comfortably decorated if a little on the ostentatious side. Public rooms are spread out and dark, providing relief from the intense heat outside (assuming you are there during the summer months!). Rooms vary according to payment, but all are fairly big, furnished comfortably if a little bit 'knocked around' by the wear and tear of it being a popular hotel. Small pool overlooking the back of the hotel, although does provide the occasional glimpse of the Old City. Top floors at the back also provide same view. Breakfast is one of the highlights of the place, although it is served in a cavern of a room so this is not an intimate moment of the day. This can also be the most confronting of yor stay, especially if it is a busy period. Lots of large families do not result in a quiet start to the day :) Staff mixed - some are friendly and helpful, some little more than courteous. But that's OK - professionalism is there - just allow for a bad day or the receptionist having just dealt with the rudest customer imagineable. (I have seen this on a couple of occasions and told the receptionists involved that they deserved a medal).
It's not such a unique place - a comfortable, tourist hotel. I understand it is a 5 star hotel - would question that rating but more than comfortable place to stay alhtough worth avoiding at the height of holiday season - simply because it being such a large hotel, the noise and general 'hub' factor can be a little unpleasant (although this is no fault of the hotel itself). It's also extremely popular for functions, further adding to the general melee of people! "Quiet European elegance, comfort, and affordability meet in the Jerusalem Gold Hotel,to create a hidden sanctuary amid the overwhelming blaze of history, diversity, and faith that is Jerusalem." So far, so good, quoted from the hotel's folder; the hotel may once have been an elegant and comfortable house; after some refurbishments all what is left are friendly staff, good food and an unchanged, not so central location as anticipated. A brisk walk of at least 35 minutes may bring you to the Old Town, but better take a taxi! The hotel-rooms are small, smaller, the smallest- a double bed taking most of the space, giving you hard problems to host your suitcase (and that's not an exception, it refers to most of the rooms!) Amenities like minibar or coffee-making-machines are unknown. But the worst thing of everything you are going to encounter is the "restaurant":, situated in the second basement: a rather small room hosts about 350 (!) seats at long, extremely narrow tables (you might erroniously take your vis a vis plate for yours). It is that cramped, that it is nearly impossible to find your way from the rich buffet back to your table (hosting 8-10 people) . In contrast to the above the food is near to very good, the staff friendly and helpful. So you'll have to decide: I for myself would rather take another hotel, all in all !
see above ! Friendly receptionists and staff, not everywhere met in Israel !
