Travel from Jerusalem to Petra to Egypt
by Godislove555
We would like to spend a couple of days in Jerusalem then a day in Petra and a couple of days in Egypt. I would like to know the best way to do this - also the most economical way. We went to Israel a couple of years ago and used public transportation quite a bit. I am find the tours to be expensive. I understand, on researching, that you can take a bus to Eliat and then to Petra and back to Eliat and go from there to Egypt. There doesn't seem to be public transportation to Egypt or to Petra. What do we do?

There are no "cross-border" buses. You take (Israel) transportation to a border (Egypt or Jordan), cross the border on foot and take local public transportation on the other side. A sight with good information on how to do this is:

I agree with the answer above - no "cross coutnry" bus (yet).
From Eilat you can take a bus or taxi to the Aqaba corssing (5 minutes drive). Once you crossed to Jordan you can take a taxi to petra and if you are more than one person this is porbably the best way to see it on a day tour. You can set for the driver to wait for you and pick you at the end of the day from Petra back to Aqaba. I'd spend the night there in order not to be pressured from time aspect.

Wouldn't it be very expensive to take a taxi to Petra? I understand it is several hours drive. How would we get to Egypt once we get back to Eliat? Is there a bus going there too?

Also, is this kind of travel entirely safe? Especially to Jordan? and Egypt.

Answers to your questions are given at the web site whose link I posted in my 1st post.

Yes, it is safe. "expansive" depands on your standard the taxi from Aqaba crossing to Petra is about 50-60 Dinars. From Aqaba corossing (Jordan/Israel) to Taba crossing (Israel/Egypt) it is about 20 minutes drive, again, taxi will be the easy way to get there.
Enjoy!
Travel Tips for Eilat
Full moons and long nights.
by Lizette102
I worked on the cruise ships in Eilat for 3 months. It is fairly easy to get a job, just go to the marina and ask around. It was the most amazing time of my life. You only do daily cruises to the surrounding islands and reefs and during the night you P.A.R.T.Y!!
It is a great place to have a short working holiday! Lying on deck at night hearing the music from all the beach parties and ofcourse the strawberry daquiries!!
DOLPHIN REEF BEACH
by Carmela71
The dophin reef has a very nice beach, so while enjoying the dolphins, you can have a bath is a separate area, and have some food of the restuarant. As usual our waitress talked in spanish as she was from Uruguay.
Scuba Diving !
by Sharon
Eilat is a very well known destinations for divers from all over the world.
It has a great underwater life, reefs, nice beaches, good scuba diving centers and more.
One of the biggests, well known and professional scuba diving centers is "Deep Siam".
Deep Siam is a relativly big diving center and it offers scuba diving services for:
Scuba diving courses
regular divers
Technical deivers
CCR divers.
Day trips on boats in Eilat bay, day trips in Eilat area, organaized scuba diving trips to Aqaba and many other activities.
Not many diving cenrters offer professional knowledge and services such as Deep Siam Center.
Just not long ago John Chaterton was (THE well known diver who discovered few huge sunked ships, among them the Titanic) a guest of Deep Siam.
In a nutshell.... if you wish to enjoy some diving, or come over for a diving course i definitely recommend you to do it all in Deep Siam.
(By the way, courses can be done (obviously) in English and also in Hungarian !)
When in Deep Siam you can also enjoy their Good restaurant while sitting oon the deck watching the great view of jordan on the other side.
You can check all details in DeepSiam's website
- or via this email address below... and feel free to write Ilan and tell him i sent you :-)
Red Sea Sport Club (Diving Club)
by Sharon
The Red Sea Sport Club Or shortly RSSC is one of the oldest and best Scuba diving centers. Its located in the Ambassador Hotel in the southern part of the city (accross the road to the Aqua Sport club) and its close to some of the nices reefs in Eilat.
Since they are located near the Ambassador hotel they have deals with the hotel that offers good prices for divers so you can check that with them as well.
Aside the Scuba diving this sport club offer some other activities such cruiz to Taba, Trip to Petra, Camal's ride Jeeps trips etc'.
When i did my Scuba diving licesns many more then 10 years ago i was doing it there and i was very happy with it, they are very good, very reponsible and nice. Not for nothing they arehaving many tourists every year and their good reputation.
MASSADA
by Helga67
From Eilat, it's easy to make a daytrip to Massada.
The fortress atop a sheer-sided plateau was the last stand of the Zealots, Jewish rebels who rose against the Roman Empire in 66 AD. When defeat was inevitable, the 967 men, women and children holed up at Masada took their own lives rather than be captured
