Travel from Petra to Eilat

by Geelong09

We are planning to travel to Amman and then on to Petra next month: We want to go to Eilat but not sure what the best (and safest) mode of travel for our family of 4. Rob/Melbourne

This is a perfectly safe trip. From Petra you can get either a bus or a taxi to Aqaba and then to the Arava crossing. You walk across the border and take a taxi or a bus to Eilat.

There are buses to Aqaba at about 6.20am, at 7am, at 8am and at 4.15pm. There are sometimes other buses in between, which don't seem to have a particular schedule.

I suggest a thorough reading of this site:

Aqaba is a good place to head for if you want the sea. If you have seen that famous David Lean film you will remember the charge down the valley to Aqaba with Peter O'Toole on his camel. Apparently all fictionalised and the actual filming was in Spain! Worth watching again if you plan to get to Wadi Rum from either Aqaba or Petra.

The best transportation from Petra to Eilat border cross for 4 people is a taxi.
You're going to pay about 40JD. It means about 10JD=~10Eur per person. European style highway, ~2.5 hours.

A one day visit in Wadi Rum, on the way to Aqaba/ Eilat, is highly recommended.

Travel Tips for Eilat

by Gili_S

I would say that the best things in Eilat are:

The weather. Between October to April it is very friendly weather, nights can be cold at winter, days can be very hot also in Autumn/Spring. You can be in Summer time in Eilat, in one condition, by avoiding being out in direct sun between 9:00-17:00. After that it is very lovely to hang around and spend your time on the beach and later on in restaurants and nightlife activities.

The sea. The red sea is wonderful sea, rich of corals and fishes. It is heaven for divers, but truly, you do not require to be a diver, just simple mask & snorkel, few steps to the water and you get full rich world of the underwater life

Size. Eilat is relatively small, so where ever you want to go will be near by, to most of the places you can just walk. A bit more further, take a taxi, it will be only 5-10 minutes ride.

Facilities. It is a very modern city, all the hotels are on high standards, verias of resteruants, pubs & night clubs.
Global credit cards widely accepted, restaurants, stores, shopping centres, medical centre, banks, post etc, all located
in a comfortable locations to serve the local & tourist. Toilets and other facilities are located usually near by clean & comfortable.

Transportation Eilat has its own international airport, however, in case of larger aircrafts they are landing in near by at the Ovda airport, about 50 min. by bus from Eilat.

Languages. English, French, German & Russian are commong languages among hotel and resteurants staff. All taxi drivers require to pass basic English test. English is widly spoken.

Family. Very comfortable to visit with small children and many attractions as well. Too many....

Goldstar is the local Dark Lager Beer, I mean local in Israel, no Eilat. It is brewed since the nineteen fifties with an imported Czech formula and technology which make it good beer. especially after a long day at the beach.

Eilat is sorrounded with beautiful mountains and landscapes.
A great option is to walk around the city and see the beautiful mountains.

There are places for hiking with families and of course for pro's.

Good shoes , a lot of water , hat , map of the area , cell phone that you will be able to call if you have a problem , Sun cream.

Desert Safari

If you are with a car or planning to rent one, take a short trip to the Hai-Bar Yotvata reservation park. This is very small park with herds of antelopes which many cannot be seen anywhere else in the world. Also there is small zoo with snakes, hyena's, jackal, foxes, caracal and local leopard.

How to get there:
Drive north from Eilat about 20-30 minutes and you can get there.

Eilat - View from the mountains - Nahal Shlomo

by Martin_S.

This is the view of the Eilat bay from Nahal Shlomo, as you can see it is only a short few hours walk to reach this point. This is also a great area with several mountain bike rides possible, you can get a good topographic map on a scale of 1:50,000 with the trails marked.
