The full visa for Egypt

by lola521

Hello,

I am looking for some updated information about the full visa needed for Egypt. I understand you get it at the Egyptian Consulate in Afraty Street. One source has said it takes only an hour wait for it but the post was dated in 2005. Recently on another forum I read that you leave your passport with them and pick it up the next day!! I wasn't planning on an overnight in Eilat.

Thanks for any information

Well, we don't know who are you and where from? For example, some can get the visa at the border and do not need it is advance, some need to apply in advance and if you do need visa, apply for it in your home country before you go.

We got ours about a month before we left home for our trio to Egpyt. That is the prudent thing to do as once you have it, no more worries about opening hours, waiting times, etc.

Check with the local Egptian Embassy or Consulate.

Hi. Last year I got my visa from the Eilat consulate. It took less than an hour for me. It's just a matter of filling out a form and taking 2 photos with you. You may need to still factor in a night stay in Eilat though depending on the time of buses on the Egyptian side of the Taba border and your final destination.

I have heard the visa is more expensive at home. I am from the US single traveler...doing a coach tour of Israel in October. But I want to go to Petra and Cairo. I'm thinking it might end up being one or the other. (favoring Cairo right now). Just trying to get an idea of doing this by myself and how hard/easy it's going to be for a single women in her 60's. You have all been helpful and I do appreciate it. I will check out the visa application here first.

And how much more it will be? 10 or 20 dollar? Save the trouble, get the visa at home and enjoy your holiday stress free.
*By the way, I found this on the net: "USA and Canadian citizens can get a visa from our consulates abroad or upon their arrival to Egypt."

I went to Egypt last year (dec 08) after a tour of Israel. I stayed overnight at Taba. it took me 1/2 hour to get a visa to visit Egypt from the Eilat side............I had two pictures with me and they took my passport for all of five minutes while filling out their forms. It cost me $20 LE to get the Visa.

Please note that for the Taba crossing only, *all* foreign nationals need to get the *full* Egyptian visa in advance, as none are issued at this crossing - only "Sinai passes". This does NOT apply to other points of entry to Egypt (e.g., ferry from Aqaba to Nuweiba, Cairo airport).

"Full visa" means one allowing you to go all over Egypt. At the Taba crossing, only "Sinai passes" are issued - good only for travel in parts of Sinai. That is why you need to get a "full visa" in advance if you want to continue westward to, say, Cairo.

Re: The full visa for Egypt

It is as Ramot says. You must get an Egypt visa from the Consulate in Eilat in advance or only a Sinai pass at the Taba border.

To the best of my knowledge the Consulate will give the visa on the same day if you apply in the morning. If not, it may be an overnight wait.

Such a hassle. From all the countries I visited only once I went to consulate (of China) to ask for visa. Most countries that ask for advance visa I will avoid anyway.

Darb el Hajj or "Pilgrim's Road"

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

The Darb el Hajj or "Pilgrim's Road", from Africa through Egypt to Mecca, passed out of Sinai from the west at Eilat before skirting the sea and continuing south into Arabia.
Following peace treaties signed with Egypt in 1979 and Jordan in 1994, Eilat's borders with its neighbors were finally opened.
So the modern Darb el Hajj or "Pilgrim's Road" leads through Eilat again like many centuries ago…
Route #12 from Eilat winds its way through the expansive landscapes between the Edom and the Eilat Mountains. This is the ancient road to Mecca which was built at the beginning of the 8th century by. the Egyptian ruler, Mahmud lbn Tulun. The road connected Egypt with the Eilat Heights and Eilat with Aqaba and Mecca.
To the west, you can see the ancient route to Mecca, "Darb el Hajj", that crosses the Sinai desert, descends to the Gulf of Eilat and continues on to Mecca and Medina.

You can watch my 4 min 18 sec HD Video Eilat Ride to Har Shelomo out of my Youtube channel.

You can watch my high resolution photo of Eilat on the Google Earth according to the following coordinates 29° 34' 53.87" N 34° 53' 13.20" E or on my Google Earth Panoramio Solomon Mountain.
