Amra Palace Hotel: Small, modest and 5 min' from Petra
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • A month before this trip when i was about to travel independently with a few friends, i searched for hotel around Petra but never heard about this hotel, only about the bigger ones and better known ones (Movenpick, Taybet Zaman, Golden Tulip etc'..).
Only when i joined this trip a month later which was kind of organaized i asked where will we be staying and heard that name. Googling this name i couldn't find much info so thats actually why its the first tip i'm writing on this page (not sure when i'll write more) hopping it will help others when looking for acommodation.
The Amra hotel is a relatively Small hotel, Located in Wadi Musa, 5 minutes (Really) drive from Petra Site. Its not one of the posh hotels (like the Muvenpick or the Golden Tulip), Its basically very simple and very basic designed though pretty comfortable.
The Single rooms are small, personally i didn't have any interesting view from my room... just a window watching the building near by. The Single room contained two single beds, Small bathroom, TV, hair driere, closet and i think thats about it, pretty basic room. Night time was very cold so i tried to switch on the heating but it didnt work, just cooled the room ! I didnt feel like calling the reception and start this whole tiring thing since i was way too tired, so i just grabed the blankets that were on the second bed and that definitely warmed me. However, if you come on winter time i might want to check this detail before and make sure it works cause trust me, IT IS COLD there, actually not only on winter time, after all i was there on Aprl 8th and it was still cold, we didnt even expect that weather so some of us including my smart self didnt even have jackets !.

    ** Continue **
However, From a spoilt girl point of view i can tell you that If you'll be visiting there for one night like i did, this hotel should be absolutely enough for you. We arrived back from our day at the desert at around 6 - 7pm (and left the morning after at 9am) and we were sooooo tired we didnt care much about anything.... just needed shower food and sleep. The only thing i decided to do was to spoile my self a bit by going to the Khamam and enjoy one good treat. But thats a story for another tip.
If i would have come to enjoy there for a few days i'd definitely book a better hotel and enjoy a much more comfy rooms and other facilities that those hotels offer, but at this case i had no time anyway so as i mentioned before, it was quite good as is.

Another thing, the hotel Stuff was really polite and kind and made us feel very welcome.
Food at dinner and morning was okay, nothing spectacular though not bad. I know some of the people in my trip slept in another hotel (was fully booked when i booked my trip at the last moment) and enjoyed a great breakfast... but okay thats not such a big deal at this case so i think this hotel was really okay if you need a one night sLEEP than its absolutely okay.
    Have a great trip :-)

Petra Palace: Stay near the ruins
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • It's a three stars comfortable hotel not far from the entrance gate to the ruins of Petra. Rooms were spacious and bright, and dinner served at their restaurant was actually quite good.

The usual of a three stars hotel, with the added bonus that the bar was quite empty and that the barman was more than keen to discuss anything to do with Jordan: life, customs, religion, politics. Interesting talks.

Petra Movenpick: Vacation within a Vacation
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Believe it or not, we got an internet special of $89 a night....a far cry from their standard $350 a night. We were so lucky!

This hotel is bar none, THE place to stay in Petra....if you can afford the price tag or if like us, you can snag yourself a great deal. We were there in December which is very low season, so that would explain the reduced room rate. You never know - could happen to you. I'm including the email address below, so you can email the resort directly and inquire about pricing during your visit.

Staying at the Movenpick made us feel like we were having a vacation WITHIN our vacation! The hotel was pure luxury, from the exotic beduoin decor throughout the hotel, to the spa and fitness room, not to mention the late night tea room where we chatted with the ever cordial "host" and sipped tea while nibbling on biscuits....it was wonderful to feel pampered after a day of exploration in the Petra National Park.

The staff is nice, the food is varied and delicious, and honestly, you can't beat the location. It was wonderful.

Petra Silk Road Hotel: clean and simple
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Stayed for only one night... didn't eat there at all. It served its purpose perfectly. Needed a place to sleep, and that is what i got.

Nothing really unique... but it is a few meters away from the main gate of Petra and the rooms have air conditioning.

Crowne Plaza Petra: Best views, but not a great hotel
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Spend there two nights, December 31st 2005, and January 1st 2006. Hotel was Ok. It has the design of a big resort, with rooms attached like bungalows, a swimming pool, and all the rooms facing the arenisque mountains of Petra, which provides really spectacular views. The location is the best, just 500 metres from Petra Visitors Centre, gate to Petra ancient location.

In some hotel lists this hotel is shown as a 5 star hotel, and in some others as a 4 star hotel. It's a 4 star hotel, not more. Rooms are nice, and well equipped, but some of the furniture needs urgent renewing. Specially chairs and wood chest of drawers, which were literally broken.

Also restaurant facilies are quite standard, and nothing special. Had New Year's Eve dinner at Olive Restaurant, inside the hotel, and was quite mediocre.

Absolute and unique views from every room. Together with its locations, are the best things that his hotel have.

So, if you don't have a limited budget and can spend a little bit more money, Mövenpick hotel is the right choice for Petra. It's also very near Petra entrance and it is much better than Crowne Plaza.

    Various: No choice

  • There is no accommodation available in Petra itself. The local town of Wadi Musa provides a wide option according to tastes and budgets.

    Hotels in Wadi Musa
  • Tip Rating:
  • The nearest town to Petra is Wadi Musa. There are plenty of hotels and restaurants for any budget (bargain the price). It takes half an hour to walk from Wadi Musa to Petra entrance gate (ticket office) or you can take a taxi.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • I didnt actually do this although I would have loved to.

Some American and Danish friends of mine, stayed in Petra after dark and actually set up camp and stayed the night within Petra itself.

It is not allowed, but they got away with it & what a wonderful memory they are left with, Lucky Them!

Our stay in the Sunset Hotel was fine, I cant really remember much about it, so it must have been ok. We went out for dinner with a couple of German men we met at the hotel, it was a sociable place.

With getting up at 5.30 in the morning to be at petra for opening at 6am, we really didnt spend much time there
