I spent one night at this hotel, using Priority Club points for the stay. The room was quite comfortable, if not super-luxurious, and the location was absolutely unbeatable--a two-minute walk from the entrance to Petra. (Of course, after you get through the gate, you're still walking for another 45 minutes, but who's counting!)

The staff at this hotel really went out of their way to be friendly and accommodating. Although I was staying at the Crowne Plaza for free, on points, the fact that I was a Priority Club member apparently qualified me to receive the most stupendous fruit basket I have ever seen (it was good for about four entire meals), plus early check-in AND late check-out. Everyone was extremely nice, from the reception desk to the restaurant waiters. I would definitely stay at this hotel again.

  • This is an ideal place to stay. The hotel is a short walk to the entrance gate to Petra. This means that you can get there before the crowds from the tour buses on a morning & after a day exploring Petra when you are tired, thirsty & dusty, the hotel is just minutes away.

The hotel has a heated outdoor pool, spa & fitness centre. It also has a variety of bars & restaurants.

Sofitel Taybet Zamaan: charming & lovely hotel
  • Satisfaction:
  • when I decided to spend 3 nights in Petra, I could not decide between the Movenpick & Taybet Zaman, ultimately chose Tabyet despite its distance from Petra, because it was a chance to stay at a 19th century Ottoman village converted into a "hotel"

the hotel & my room itself were both charmingly decorated and I would have taken more photos of the hotel except that I was really just there to sleep & shower, so cannot comment on the food there (I did go to the bar for beer and since the price included breakfast, picked up pastries every morning)

what I did not like about the hotel is that they were slow to respond to emails, I ended up having to call them to confirm a change of dates & also the driver (Fares M. Mashaleh) they sent to pick me up from the airport (that I ended up using for the whole trip) turned out to be kind of creepy (he grabbed my knee/thigh area a few times on the last day... I was in jeans & 5 layers of clothes but I still felt molested) ... I don't know enough about Jordanian culture but this was not my 1st solo trip to the Middle East, I did not have any issues with anyone else here or elsewhere in the Middle East (i.e. I loved my bedouin guide Awdeh (962)796-287-982 that I spent 2 days with in Petra to hike to Aaron's tomb, Umm Al-biyara, the high place of sacrifice, & the monastery... also enjoyed the 1 day in Wadi Rum with Atallah (rumhorses@yahoo.co.uk) from Rum Horses ... every other Jordanian dude/lady I met were 150% friendly, warm yet courteous ! )

the hotel shuttle bus also ran only twice a day, once at 9:30 a.m. & once at 2:30 pm (Petra opens at 6 a.m., even in Dec), so I ended up having the creepy driver daily (although he did not turn into a creep until the last few hours before he dropped me off at the airport)

overall though, the experience with the hotel & the staff was a positive one and I would still recommend it.

Sofitel Taybet Zamaan: A former bedouin village
  • Satisfaction:
  • We stayed at the Taybet Zaman Hotel. This village has been leased for 30 years by their owners - the inhabitants - to the Sofitel Group, who converted the place into a hotel. The Swiss didn't meet their financial targets and sold the lease to a Jordan company. In about 15 years the inhabitants will decide what to do with the place. It is a unique hotel / resort and we had lovely rooms.

    Two drawbacks:
    - it doesn't have the atmosphere of a village;
    - the food is 'hotel quality', not up the a 5* standard.

They cater for large groups and only have a self-service / counter restaurant. There is a large variety of dishes, this is not the problem. The problem is that most of these dishes are flat, tasteless and rather cold. We preferred the restaurant in Petra, which is also self-service but is cheaper - i'm Dutch - is more tasty and has a hugh turn over: the food doesn't become cold.

Staff is very helpful, it is not their fault.

A two centuries old village, beautifully renovated. All rooms are different. Great views.

PETRA MARRIOTT: Up to the hill
  • Satisfaction:
  • Stay there in Feb. 2007. My stay was ok, get a twin bed despite the fact the hotel was empty and I asked for a double bed ! At least it was kind of twin queen.
The location of the hotel is up to the hill so you need some transport to go down and up to the site. I guess the hotel has some shuttle bus a fixed time of the day.
Price was moreless ok, I paid about 55 JOD ++ which makes it approx 66 JOD or 95 USD but if you want to use the spa, you need to add some extra money, smth like 15 JOD.
The restaurant is not really good for dinner and the breakfast is ok but nothing special for a Marriott.
The pool is not that big !
Next time, I would stay in Movenpick !

Location if you have your own wheels.
Price if you compare to Movenpick.
