by stappm It was a difficult choice to make via the Internet but I narrowed it down to either the Movenpick or Crown Plaza. My decision was based on services/star-ratings (the only 5 star hotels nearby) reviews and location (both very close to the park's entrance, Sofitel and Marriott immediately lost out as they are shuttle rides away) - and still after returning it's a hard toss. Movenpick has better architecture, spectacular fountains, Middle Eastern decor, and much better shops. However the Crown Plaza, even though it's plain standard Crown Plaza decor is left lacking to say the least, the location is amazing as it backs up to Petra National Park which allows for amazing views from most all of the rooms plus it has a pool. Both hotels are just a short walk (very short walk) to the visitors center and entrance of Petra. I ended up at the Crown Plaza, the service was great and the bell captain was exceptionally courteous. So for the price difference, I can shop at Movenpick and enjoy the view at the Crown Plaza! BRING CASH - there is NO CASH machine at the hotel nor at the Movenpick. The nearest ATM is about a 2 mile walk (or taxi ride) up a hill. The hotel was courteous enough to allow me to get cash against my credit card, but only $20 USD (I begged for $50 and the obliged) and the park only takes cash (entrance, tours, etc all cash) Petra (the park) is expensive and you will need lots of cash.
They have a very nice restaurant in Petra at the bottom, past the Treasury and the food was excellent! "Basin Restaurant" and everything could be charged to the room.

THE POOL OVERLOOKING THE VALLEY by DAO Comfortable, good beds, good service, good food. An excellent Hotel. It is an international 4 Star Hotel, but the prices are very low by comparison. The walk from the entrance of Petra to the Treasury is 2 miles. This is a great place to start!
This hotel is essentially at the gates to Petra. After a long hot day in the valley, you can slip into the pool whilst still looking into Petra! Don't forget to take some apples from breakfast for the donkeys

Hotel facade by MiguelMV Spend there two nights, December 31st 2005, and January 1st 2006. Hotel was Ok. It has the design of a big resort, with rooms attached like bungalows, a swimming pool, and all the rooms facing the arenisque mountains of Petra, which provides really spectacular views. The location is the best, just 500 metres from Petra Visitors Centre, gate to Petra ancient location. In some hotel lists this hotel is shown as a 5 star hotel, and in some others as a 4 star hotel. It's a 4 star hotel, not more. Rooms are nice, and well equipped, but some of the furniture needs urgent renewing. Specially chairs and wood chest of drawers, which were literally broken. Also restaurant facilies are quite standard, and nothing special. Had New Year's Eve dinner at Olive Restaurant, inside the hotel, and was quite mediocre.
Absolute and unique views from every room. Together with its locations, are the best things that his hotel have. So, if you don't have a limited budget and can spend a little bit more money, Mövenpick hotel is the right choice for Petra. It's also very near Petra entrance and it is much better than Crowne Plaza.

Ideally situated to get into Petra early and collapse in the pool at the end of the day to soothe sore feet. Rooms basic but OK, free internet access. Apparently it's cheap for a HI CP hotel, but I was using loyalty points, so no idea really!
1 minute from the ticket office! Outdoor heated pool a bonus in November/ December Theme: HotelComparison: more expensive than average

I spent one night at this hotel, using Priority Club points for the stay. The room was quite comfortable, if not super-luxurious, and the location was absolutely unbeatable--a two-minute walk from the entrance to Petra. (Of course, after you get through the gate, you're still walking for another 45 minutes, but who's counting!)
The staff at this hotel really went out of their way to be friendly and accommodating. Although I was staying at the Crowne Plaza for free, on points, the fact that I was a Priority Club member apparently qualified me to receive the most stupendous fruit basket I have ever seen (it was good for about four entire meals), plus early check-in AND late check-out. Everyone was extremely nice, from the reception desk to the restaurant waiters. I would definitely stay at this hotel again.
