Al-Rashid Hotel: Al-Rashid Hotel
The Al-Rashid is very good for the price. It is very clean, and the staff are really laid back. I paid 12 JD per night for a single room. Breakfast was included but the restaurant is so good that you may as well eat dinner there as well. They had satellite TV and hot showers as well.

Baida : the Amarin Bedouin Camp
The Ammarin tribe are further to the north and thus further from Petra. Few men from among them work in Petra, and they are on the whole much less prosperous than the Bdool in the Bedouin village close to Petra. They do run a tourist camp in Baida, and would like to see it used by more people. At the moment, some guides bring tourists out there for an evening, and very occasionally a group hiking in the area will sleep there, but this is all. You can see more details and photos of this camp at
Unique Quality: As traditional as possible.
It is a little way from Petra, but most people who have cars reckon that it is worth it, at least for one night.

Crowne Plaza Petra: Crown Plaza vs. Movenpick???? Which one?
It was a difficult choice to make via the Internet but I narrowed it down to either the Movenpick or Crown Plaza. My decision was based on services/star-ratings (the only 5 star hotels nearby) reviews and location (both very close to the park's entrance, Sofitel and Marriott immediately lost out as they are shuttle rides away) - and still after returning it's a hard toss. Movenpick has better architecture, spectacular fountains, Middle Eastern decor, and much better shops. However the Crown Plaza, even though it's plain standard Crown Plaza decor is left lacking to say the least, the location is amazing as it backs up to Petra National Park which allows for amazing views from most all of the rooms plus it has a pool.
Both hotels are just a short walk (very short walk) to the visitors center and entrance of Petra. I ended up at the Crown Plaza, the service was great and the bell captain was exceptionally courteous. So for the price difference, I can shop at Movenpick and enjoy the view at the Crown Plaza!
BRING CASH - there is NO CASH machine at the hotel nor at the Movenpick. The nearest ATM is about a 2 mile walk (or taxi ride) up a hill. The hotel was courteous enough to allow me to get cash against my credit card, but only $20 USD (I begged for $50 and the obliged) and the park only takes cash (entrance, tours, etc all cash) Petra (the park) is expensive and you will need lots of cash.
Unique Quality: They have a very nice restaurant in Petra at the bottom, past the Treasury and the food was excellent! "Basin Restaurant" and everything could be charged to the room.

Cleopatra: Cleopatra visited Petra
If you want to visit Petra and you don't want to spend a lot at the indeed very luxurious Movenpick, choose one of the nice little Hotels/Hostels in the town near Petra.
My choice was "Cleopatra" a little uphill in town. They gave us (two travellers) a double-bed room for 15 US $ a night including breakfast and free transportation to and from the Petra entrance!
The staff there was very nice and if you want to chat a little they are funny and talkative. In addition to that you meet other nice travellers there.
Unique Quality: nice, clean, cheap, free transportation to/from Petra entrance!

Edom Hotel: Hotel - close to Petra entrance
The Edom Hotel is conveniently located, just a 5 minute walk from the Petra visitor centre and entrance.
The 3* hotel has clean, well furnished rooms with en-suite facilities and balconies.
The hotel's restaurant serves a good value set menu dinner in the evenings and a buffet breakfast in the mornings.
On checking out, we were able to store our luggage for the day while we visited Petra and the hotel arranged for a taxi to pick us up for our onwards journey to Aqaba.
A convenient, moderately priced hotel - just a stone's throw from Petra!

Al Anbat I: a good alternative
I stayed there in April 2005, one single room (king size bed) for the fair price of 12 JOD + 3 JOD for the breakfast.
The hotel is a bit out of town but there are shuttles bus to Petra.
Unique Quality: Cheap price,
decent room with terrace but no fridge,
Turkish bath (for 12 JOD including massage !),
parking place in front of the hotel,
quiet area and good atmosphere,
Internet café (15 min = 1 JOD)

Araba Hotel
Araba Hotel is a friendly and cheap hotel high up in Wadi Mousa. The view is fantastic. Breakfast is served on the balkony (at least in summertime) and dinner, togheter with all other guests at the hotel, is served on the roof. It's very nice to sit on the roof having a coffee or tea watching the sunset over the mountains after a long day of walking in Petra.
I can't remember what I paid for a room but whene I checked out I paid 24 JD for three nights, two dinners and two bottles of water.
At Araba they can help you organise with a reliable guide in Wadi Rum (desert trip by jeep or camel).

Hotel Al Anbat I (Wadi Mousa): Hotel Al Anbat I (Wadi Mousa)
There are two Al Anbat Hotels in Wadi Mousa - one (II) is in the village, and another (I) above the village, on the King's highway on the fay from Amman. I stayed in Al Anbat I and I am very satisfied with my stay. The price was JD20 per night including breakfast and dinner (both buffets, but drinks for dinntere were not included - standard practice for Jordan). Food of great quality. The staff was friendly and efficient, the owner sat to chat with me over the dinner (to have in mind that it was high season and the hotel hosts about a hundred or more tourists). The only problem is that the hotel is far from the entrance to Petra, but since I had a car, it was not really an isue.

HOTEL KINGS WAY INN
This very nice hotel is locate in Wadi Mousa, about 4 km to Petra. Just few meters from the entrance of the hotel there is the Fountain of Moses where he found water!!! You can see a nice panorama on Wadi Mousa from the hotel. Bedrooms are very nice and clean with all the conforts of a 4 stars hotel like safety box, hair drier, mini bar...
You can taste good local food and also international ones.
A nice place where you can relax after the visit of Petra!!
