Tour operator and dive shop for Jordan

by Karenjyuan

Planning a trip to any foreign country is what you have to do well. Choosing a reputable tour operator is also one of the most time consuming and frustrating parts of the whole traveling experience. There are so many operators in the market that it becomes a nightmare finding one that will be right for you. In the past, I relied heavily on reviews from previous travelers and most have just fallen short of being really helpful.

In September of this year (2009) my boyfriend and I took a much anticipated trip to Jordan. It was the first time traveling to the Middle East for both of us and among the various sites Jordan has to offer we were sure we wanted to go to Petra, the Dead Sea and scuba dive in the Red Sea. Through the recommendation of our diving friend, I began my email correspondence with the dive shop Seastar and its sister tour operator Above and Below.

Seastar (http://www.aqabadivingseastar.com/) is a locally managed dive shop in Aqaba Jordan and was Jordan’s first 5-star PADI Instructor Development Center since 2002 and has over 20 years of experience. Above and Below (http://www.aboveandbelow.info/), also located in Aqaba, is Seastar’s sister company that specializes in excursions in the Jordan area such as Petra, Wadi Rum, Jerash, the Dead Sea, etc. To my surprise, I got a response to my initial email in less than 15 hours (please note the time difference as I live in the United States) that answered fully all of my questions and concerns and laid out all of the costs per dive and some recommendations on how we could plan our dives in the allotted time.

Gill, the owner of this tour operator patiently answered ALL of my non-stop questions regarding diving in he Red Sea in detail over the course of a month. I could tell she took my questions seriously and answered each with effort. As our correspondence continued and we finalized our dive schedule I began to ask her about the other activities we wanted to do while we were in Jordan. I mapped out our preferred itinerary and sent it off to her and, as always, she responded promptly with her recommendations and our options. Due to our busy schedules and work, my bf and I were unable to finalize our itinerary until a month after our first correspondence with Gill. However, Gill waited patiently and responded swiftly every time. When the itin was finalized, she even gave us the option of keeping the credit/debit card details as a guarantee of payment and we could make the final payment in Aqaba.

Upon arrival in Amman, the car and driver arranged for us, Sameh, met us at our hotel the following morning to start us on our week long trek through all of Jordan. Sameh was a perfect gentleman and a very knowledgeable guide. He patiently waited in the car until we finished our site-seeing and always offered to buy us refreshments. Not only did he take us to all the places we wanted to see if time permitted, he even offered to take us to a personal favorite of his, Little Petra; we took him up on his offer and it was worth it! I truly believe that our trip was as enjoyable as it was because of our professional and fun driver who was with us the entire trip.

In short, Seastar + Above and Below did not disappoint. The chosen hotels were excellent and the itinerary was organized spotlessly to allow us to see the sites of our interest. Gill is a swift and knowledgeable communicator and I only have praise for their services. As this will not be our last time in the Middle East, we will surely continue to use Gill and her expertise for future trips.

Respectfully suggest that if this is your first time diving you concentrate on the diving and looking experience. Diving anywhere close to whale sharks can be a "moving" experience in more ways than one and not for the inexperienced diver. Disposable cameras are essentially useless at depth. Even a point and shoot with a good case that will go to 50-100 feet will not take good photos due to the lack of flash. to photograph in anything lower than 10 feet you need a good camera with great flash and sorry to say, that will be expensive. Even a cheap digital with lens will be $1000; The case will be another $1000 and the flash could actually run up there as well. good luck though and hope you have a great trip.

To add, disposable cameras can only be used to 30 feet, and they really are very crappy resolution before that. There is a decent Canon point and shoot that you can get for $400 (the housing is about another $300). It also records about an hour of video.

And yes, this is your first time diving, you need to pay more attention to your buoyancy than trying to take pictures.

There will be other divers with cameras on the trip, just ask them if they would mind emailing you copies of their shots. I'm sure they would be more than happy to share.

Travel Tips for Aqaba

Respectful Attire

by jadedmuse

Jordan is a Muslim country and you'll see many of the women wearing scarves to cover their heads - this isn't necessary for Western women visiting, but it IS respectful to keep your arms and legs covered, even if you're visiting Petra which can get very hot during the summer months. Lightweight natural fibers are a good way to go.

Diving : the Eel Garden

by TheWanderingCamel

This another site located at the Club Murjan area. Enter on left side of gully and edge down and south to 10m swimming over grass to a pinnacle at 19m covered in Christmas Tree worms of al colours. Continue south at 25m through a forest of black coral, ascend the sand slope to coral outcrops surrounded by Banner Fish and Lion Fish and up to a pinnacle at 7m that is a photographer's dream...

The pinnacle is covered in an array of soft corals, a home for many different species of Morays, rare Harlequin Shrimp and Ghost Pipe Fish. Plus lots of Glass Fish protected by a Red Toothed Grouper and Lion Fish. Head back over the Ell Grass home, to hundreds of eels, disappearing and reappearing as divers swim over, back to sandy area in the gully at 5m for safety stop.

Diving : Yellowstone Reef

by TheWanderingCamel

Also in Big Bay, care is needed at the entrance as there is sharp rubble and urchins. Once over this you pass over a large mountain coral (Yellowstone) at 5 m a good place for a safety stop at the end of the dive.. At 10m there is an old oil drum, now home to a host of Morays and coral reef colonisation, which is why it has been left there! Swim south to a reef spur with a pinnacle at the end at 18m with lots of Red Fire sponge and 4 colour nudibranchs. Passing over a gully you reach the main reef and follow the contour down to the planned max. depth, usually 25 - 30m. Across this reef it is one of the few places to see groups of Bat fish and at 27m there is a massive Black coral bush, which marks the turn around point. Move up the reef to a depth of 12-15m. Look into the blue as there are often large Jacks and Tuna. On reaching the reef spur with the pinnacle head up across the grass to the Yellowstone coral for the safety stop, watch out for lines of squid in formation across the grass.

Have a look at the Palace!

by TheWanderingCamel

When you're out on that glass bottomed boat, don't forget to look at the Royal Palace. You won't see anything from the shore, but it's easy to pick it out from the sea from all the trees surrounding it.

The Royal Family used to gather here in November for King Hussein's birthday. Perhaps they still do.
