The staff on the desk were very nice, shame about the hotel. Having no hot water for 48 hours didn't exactly help but even leaving that aside, the rating has to be "Could do better". The location was good, easy walking distance to lots of places -but then so are most hotels in Beirut. The rooms were OK, a bit tired but a reasonable size and, once it came on again, there was plenty of hot water. Breakfast was very, very ordinary though they did seem to make more of an effort on our last day. I wouldn't stay here again, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

The best thing about the Grand was the pigeon shop across the road - walking in to buy a bottle of water (at 11pm) and being confronted by a wall of cages full of pigeons and what looked like the Mafia chapter of the Beyrouth Pigeon Fancier's Club was one of the more surreal experiences of our time in Beirut.

Talal's New Hotel: Friendly and cheap hotel in Beirut

In June and August 2002 I stayed more than two weeks at Talal?s New Hotel. This is a very nice, cheap, clean and friendly hotel near Charles Helou Station in Beirut. Zaher, Rawad, Jamal (in 2005 Ragheb was there instead) and Ahmad made all feel very welcome and helped with information about getting around in Lebanon. From Charles Helou you can take the bus to Syria or the north of Lebanon. The hotel is also near Down Town area and Achrafiye. I returned for a few days in June 2005 and some changes had been made so all rooms (except a small one on the top floor) now have their own bathroom. All of the rooms have air-condition and all rooms have Satellite TV. There is a communal kitchen, laundry service (2 dollars/load in 2002) and free Internet. The price in June 2005 was: Dorms: 6 dollars Single room: 15 dollars Double room: 18 dollars Triple room: 21 dollars

  • Very nice place! There is so much to do within walking distance from the Mayflower. Clean rooms and friendly staff. Good restaurant and pub. There is a market and liquor store one block away and also a great falafel/shawarma take away. This is my one and only place to stay in Beirut!

Rooftop swimming pool with great city and sea views.

Luxurious boutique hotel with amazing position and an amazing view. Set pretty much on the corniche, next to the hard rock cafe it's an ideal position for those that want a more relaxed stay than in the heart of Beirut. It's a very classy hotel and with the exception of one of the managers who was very rude, the rest of the staff and the most pleasant helpful people you could meet. The rooms are very nice and the views are exceptional as ever room has a sea view, although some are better than others, luckily i had a great view. The bathrooms are grand and modern and TV in the room is a great size not that you'll be watching it too much as there's so much to see in lebanon. At night the bar upstairs on the 6th floor opens and they play loud acid/latin jazz mixed with arabic music and a few other forms of music... the drinks are expensive for lebanon but coming from england they were quite reasonable for a cocktail... with them being around $10 each. The barman up there is very friendly and makes really good cocktails. The only problem with the bar is that if you're on the 5th floor you will get the noise (mainly music) booming through the ceiling til about 2am, but friends of mine stayed on the 4th floor and they couldn't hear it... it didn't bother me to be honest because i had to join in. Breakfast is in the style of a continental buffet and this can be included in the rate depending on where you book the hotel. The only problem i had with the hotel, is that when the bar was open upstairs, getting an elevator (lift) from my room to the ground floor seemed like a long wait... The internet connection in the hotel is slow and and the computers are so old it took almost 10 minutes just to get to the stage where i could try connecting. but these are small niggles and when you look at everything else the hotel has to offer are not even really noticed. The Sun sets right in front of the hotel so you get a great view from the lobby around 6pm

SHOWER!! (Douche) many hotels in lebanon only come with a Bath (Banio) so if a shower is a must for you then this is place to be, it's instantly hot water and clean as well as powerful. POSITIONING!! the hotel is pretty much set on the corniche, so it's good if you want to walk or jog. As i mentioned before the sun sets right in front of the hotel in summer months so you'll never have to miss it. You can easily walk to Hamra from there, and if you're feeling a bit more adventurous then you can walk to downtown from there also, although that's around a 20 minute walk. it's about 10 minutes drive from the airport so it's easy to get to. Each of the rooms are airconditioned with their own controls so no problem there restaurants on the roof as well as a bar later in the night... definately visit it on the weekend. Beach access to the St. Georges Yachting Club, or "La Plage" ("the beach") but i didn't find this out until after i left so please check.

Riviera Hotel: Beiruts Best Beach Club
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • I really enjoyed the Riviera - it is a good location in comparison to the other hotels with beach clubs in Beirut (closer to Downtown). The hotel is showing slight signs of aging and I was surprised it has a 5 star rating (Gym is Lacking with a capital L, and shopping as well as a salon are non-existent.) However, they are remodeling the rooms and the new ones are looking good (yeah!). All that aside the Riviera is a Beirut landmark and has one of, if not the, best Beach Club to be seen at in Beirut.

Wonderful Staff - from the front desk to the pool staff - most speak English and french (& of course Arabic). Breakfast included, simple continental with beautiful fruit served in the yatch club.

Lords Hotel: West Beirut, near the lighthouse
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • We liked the location of the hotel very much. From the Lords Hotel it was easy to walk to the Hamra street, the heart of the city for shopping and entertainment. Coming out the door, just turn right and we were in the right street. The Lords Hotel is also just near the western end of the Corniche, the Avenue Charles the Gaulle. Coming out the door, just turn left and there we are. At the Corniche turning right, and we could start our stroll along the Corniche in the direction of downtown. If you turning left at the Corniche, it was a short walk to the beach and the Pigeon Rocks.

Casa D Or Hotel: Nice Place in Hamra   Compare Rates NEW!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Great hotel - conveniently located on the corner of Hamra and Jeanae D'Arc - just 2 blocks from Starbucks. The hotel is modern and clean - the restaurant is excellent and breakfast is included. If you have any special requests not on the menu they will make every effort to get it. They have in room internet access as well as a business center. The staff was excellent and available for help in car rental, tours, etc. The rooms are actually better looking then they appear on the website! Just make sure to ask for a room on one of the top floors as Hamara is a very loud busy street during the day (starting in the early morning)

No pool - but for a nominal fee you can go to one of the Beach Resorts for the day on the Corniche. The views from the rooms are adjacent buildings on Hamra, nothing special. Valet parking.

    Talal's New Hotel
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The hostel owner has been very hospitable. I received welcome drink. The toilet and shower room are in general, clean. In addition, the owner allowed me to take shower, which was FOC, in the evening before I took my long haul flight back to Singapore. It really made my day, you know, especially after a long day in Sidon and Tyre. Furthermore, the owner directed me to take a minibus which is not far from the hostel, to airport. I was surprised that the minibus (which cost 500LL or US$0.3) went right in front of the departure hall (apparently this information was not provided by Lonely Planet guide book issued in August 2004!). A usual taxi will cost around US$10.

Mayflower Hotel: once upon a time... war reporters stayed here   Compare Rates NEW!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • In 2003, when I went there - the was reporters had long been gone... not the UN people I guess, as their bus was parked outside the hotel for the night on a couple of occasions. The hotel was ok: we wrote before and we were quoted 60 dollars for a double-room - which isn't too bad for Beirut. The people at reception are really helpful.

85 nice and clean-ish rooms with everything you may need: TV, hairdryier, minibar. There's also a pun on the premises: the Duke of Wellington - for beer or delicious (and overpriced ksara wine"). If possible try to book the room only, not the breakfast - it's really poor. All around the hotel there are nice coffee shops where you can have your morning meal - better and cheaper
