Relais et Chateaux

One of Beirut's most distinguished hotels, Hotel Albergo is hidden in Achrafieh, a quiet upscale residential neighbourhood in Beirut. The hotel carries a stamp of approval from the exclusive French "Relais et Châteaux" hotel circle, which only includes small luxury hotels. It is housed in an old apartment building that was converted and expanded into a hotel. Rooms with high ceilings and arched portals were decorated with antique furniture and decorative textiles, each in a unique style ranging from European to Ottoman. The hotel staff is generally attentive and service is high quality. Staying here gives you the sense that you are back a century in some beautiful Levantine mansion.

Rooms have wireless internet and there is a beautiful roof terrace with a small swimming pool that operates in warmer months. In addition, there is a well equipped health club nearby which hotel guests often utilise.

Beirut's Only Boutique Hotel

The Hotel Albergo is in the high-end Achrafieh neighborhood and is Beirut's only boutique hotel (for now!) Opened in 1998, it is a beautifully restored historic apartment building with just a few rooms on each floor, every one decorated in a different style. There is a public restaurant on the first floor and a lovely private restaurant and lounge on the ninth floor, where I had the best breakfast one could possibly imagine. The Albergo has a tiny pool and a comfy terrace on the roof also, with great views of the city from every angle.

Unique Quality: Service was excellent at this hotel. A few minutes after I checked in, someone came to my room to deliver a pitcher of fruit juice and a fabulous fruit basket that I snacked on for the next three nights (it was replenished daily). Every evening, lovely little individual sponge cakes shaped like roses were popped into the room for late-night treats. I did not go hungry for a single second in Beirut.

Did I mention the whirlpool bath big enough for a party?
