Shelter in monistary ?

by lennwac

My name is Lennart and I´m planning a visit to Beirut this summer in July.
Any opinions on if it would be possible for me to get a bedplace in one of the christian monastarys i Beirut? I have mailed one but unfortunatly no answer yet.
Last year I was in Syria and saw that most monistarys offered bedplaces to pilgrims, so mayby this would be possible in Beirut to?
My problem is to get in contact with different monistarys.
I realy have Googled the net for contakt information but with very little luck soo far.
Could anyone please assist me in this matter? Mayby with some contact information?

Best regards

Lennart

There is some info and a video about a monastary accommodation on this website

http://www.heatheronhertravels.com/st-anthonys-monastery-of-qozhaya-in-lebanon-video/

However- it is 85km from Beirut.

Alternativly- try contacting this website for info (they offer accomm in monasteries.)

Travel Tips for Beirut

The city center of Beyrouth

by seratonin

Beyrouth has suffered a lot during the civil war years ago. But today the people there are about reconstructing the city. Expecially the Central District will be rebuilt in the same way as it was before the war. A great pleasure to walk around there.
Other parts of the city are more lively and colorful than Beyrouth`s central district. Good places to hang around too.

Finding your way around Beirut--not easy!

by travelmad478

Almost everything you want to find in Beirut is listed in the phone book and in guide books only by the street name and neighborhood, NOT house numbers. In addition, infuriatingly, most streets in Beirut are identified by signs that do not actually mention their names, but instead, list a NUMBER for the street as well as the district it's in. The newer street signs do actually spell out the street names, but these are in the minority in most of the city.

This can be a bit of a nightmare if you are trying to find something on foot, or God forbid, trying to explain to a taxi driver where you want to go. Taxi transport was especially tricky, since a very low percentage of drivers actually knew the streets and landmarks I was asking for, and none of them could read a map. I was communicating in both English and French, but neither language seemed to work very well.

I am indebted to VT member MalenaN for her suggestion to buy the GEO Projects map of Beirut, which I picked up at the Virgin Megastore in the ABC Achrafieh shopping center. It marks the locations of many important buildings in Beirut and has a vastly better street listing than the pathetic tourist map I got from my hotel. This map cost USD 8 or LBP 12,000.

US Dollar

by stappm

A friend of mine who works for the World Bank in Beirut, said the Leb. Pound (Livres) is linked to the USD & that is 1 reason the USD dollar is accepted EVERYWHERE in Lebanon. He went into a longer complicated explanation of the value in currency and it's history, as I was amazed that the USD was so...well.... available. Even some ATM machines ask you which currency you would like your cash in. From Taxi drivers to museums, to small shops in the souks, they all accept the US dollar and conversion is easy.... 1500LP to 1 USD. Frequently your change might be in LP or maybe in USD too.... if they have it......

FOOTBALL

by Moustafa_LB

Football is the best sport ever and its really loved in lebanon but still the best lebanse players dont play for any Lebanese team.

Beiruts most popular teams are Beirut Nejmeh and Beirut Ansar.

YALLA ANSAR ;-)

Harissa, interior Orthodox church

by sachara

We visited also the interior of the Orthodox church. I felt more comfortable in this smaller church than in the huge modernist church.
In the church we had a look at the beautiful and colorful paintings and icons all around the walls.
