Visiting Muscat for the first time in a Weekend!

by VidER

Hi All.

I am visiting Muscat in a weekend. Arriving on Thursday. Leaving Saturday Morning.

Since its my first time I am not sure about attractions.

What is a good luxurious hotel of a good value and nice view and amenities?

What are some of the best traditional Markets that I should visit?

How about restaurants? Any Traditional restaurant that you recommend?

Thanks guys.

Hi there
We stayed at Al Bustan Palace Hotel when we were there which was great, but I believe it is still under renovation, so I would check. The new best hotel is supposed to be the Shangri La - we also visited the Chedi which is more central and looked very nice! The Muttrah Souq was a nice market to visit by the seafront in Muttrah, also the market area in Nizwa which has a nice fort to visit too. Good to do the mosque tour of the Sultan Qaboos Mosque, you can also visit Jabrin Fort which is out of the city. We hired a car while we were there which was great for getting around in as the city is quite big. A good museum to visit is the Bait Al Zubair which gives a nice insight into Omani life. The seafood buffet at the Ruwi Sheraton Hotel on Wednesdays is very good too. I heard from the concierge that for traditional food, Ibn Ateeq restaurant is good - just ask for directions.

The Chedi is gorgous, but not what I would call "good value"! ;-)

Dear chizz,

Thanks for the tips. I have written down some notes. And will have to try that restaurant (Ibn Ateeq).

Thanks again.

Dear JessH,

Thanks. I will look at their rates.

Question:

I have read a review in the restaurants guide here in VT. Mentioning Omani BBQ (Shwaa Meat). But it does not mention the name of the restaurant or its location. Can someone tell me more about it please?

You can find the review here:
http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Middle_East/Oman/Mintaqat_Masqat/Muscat-1804277/Restaurants-Muscat-BR-2.html

Its the third review from the top.

Thanks all.

I stayed at the Grand Hyatt (I considered the Chedi, but it was VERY expensive). The Hyatt was a nice choice--good amenities like the pool etc., fantastic breakfast, and fine rooms. The hotel is immense, so if you don't like that, try someplace else.

Travel Tips for Muscat

Statues at the Mutrah Cornicle waterfront

by victorwkf

When walking along the wonderful waterfront of the Mutrah Cornicle overlooking the Muscat harbour, you will discover it is lined with many interesting statues which are very colourful. One example is the statue of the bird shown in this photograph.

Grand Mosque: Female Prayer's Hall

by victorwkf

The female prayer's hall of the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is located at the side of the mosque and is predictably smaller than the male prayer's hall with less decorations. There are mounted televisions in this hall where the females would see the prayer ritual in the male prayer's hall and follow accordingly.

Hot Air Balloon Over the Desert

by laurensutcliffe

There is a rumour that there will be a Hot Air Balloon launching in Oman (Wahiba Sands Desert to be exact) sometime this year. I have been in one before and it is the most exhillerating and magical way to see any type of landscape especially the desert where its beauty lies in its vastness. If I hear about a launch date I will post it and if anyone hears about it before me please let me know!!!

Walking sticks

by peaceness98

Walking sticks are popular with Omani men. You can find either bamboo sticks, or fine wood with silver handles
plain and carved A nice stick with brass handle and engrave something like your name on it RO 3- RO 10

better quality can get up to RO 100

Don't miss the Friday brunch

by tamerinho about Tropicana

Very good restaurant, offering both a' la carte and open buffet. Restaurant is located within the Crowne Plaza Muscat.

Their Buffet is one of the top choices in town, excquisite cuisine, very tasty, offering all specialities mainly Lebanese, French and Indian.

Their Friday brunch is among the best in town and it entitles one to enjoy the rest of the day by the pool, especially in the hot summers where one can refresh. All kinds of Kebabs
