shatti al qurm
by call_me_rhia
Shatti al qurm is the embassy area of Muscat... it's a posh and beautiful area by the sea... not very lively, I have to admit - but the beach is superb. I enjoyed some very relaxing long walks there, and some tremendous sunsets. Many of the city's hotels are to be found in this area, as well. my fondest memory is a white building that haunted me since the first moment we came to town. it's where the taxi driver wanted to drop us, and it's also where we found someone who could give the taxi driver clear directions about how to find our hotel. the same building looked amazing seen from the beach - and I wondered for a long time what it would be... a museum? a hotel? a government building? nope.. it was a simple office building. Lucky the people who work there.
Omani men and familiy issues
by georeiser
I must admit I had some predetermine thoughts about arab men and family issues. I thought the women did all the child rearing. They are responsible and take care of their children and family. I saw several men play with their children in the streets, walk with the baby carriage and so on.
Currency bring USD, Euro or British Pounds!
by saa73
This tip goes out especially to travellers from small countries like Malaysia. It is virtually impossible to get Omani Riyal in Kuala Lumpur, and money changers in Muscat rarely accept MY Ringgit.
DO make sure you bring major currencies, or change your currency in Omani Riyal at Dubai airport.
There is a money changer before passport control but again, they don't accept ringgits, and you don't want to waste time losing your place in the queue for passport control. Have at least 6 Omani Riyals for your visa (in local currency only).
Royal Oman Symphony Orchestra
by peaceness98
the only Arab Royal Orchestra in the world that plays Western Classical music.
The Royal Oman Symphony Orchestra (ROSO) was established by order of HM Sultan Qaboos in 1985 and formed under the the Royal Guard of Oman. Young Omani boys and girls are carefully selected, trained as orchestral musicians and receive a general education in purpose built accommodation at Bait Al Barakah.
There are some regular concerts in the Oman Auditorium of the Al Bustan Palace Hotel.
falafel sammies
by TomorrowsAngel about shwarma stand
The tables were clean and service was good.
There was typical Middle Eastern food - hummus, tabbouleh, falafel, mutabel, foul, shwarma etc.
Yummy fresh juice - lemon, mint, orange, pineapple, strawberry Falafel sandwich - can't beat all the yummy veges and nice crisp falafels.
