moving to Sohar

by Mikasa

Hello,

I am moving to Sohar and am interested in finding out what's there -- social life, health and fitness, things to do. Muscat is really well represented on the web, but I have so far found little on Sohar. I would appreciate any information!

Thanks

Mikasa

Re: moving to Sohar

The city of Sinbad is slowly emerging as the industrial hub of Oman.
Because of all the mega infrastructure and industrial projects, there is an increasing number of expats and shopping malls. That said, it still remains a boring and conservative place.
There is no break in the heat and humidity until october.

I am not sure if there are any fitness centres around. Check with the Sohar Beach Hotel.

Dubai and Muscat are about a 2 hour drive from Sohar and easily accessible by road.

I live in the area and it can get as boring as an outback cattle ranch downunder
Good luck.

Re: moving to Sohar

I have friends that work there and when asked this question there response was nothing. Nothing to do and nowhere to go.
The area is expanding at an exception rate for industry (Sohar Port) and this explains why the property rents are going through the roof there. Expansion has been so quick thar everything else is having trouble to catch up including housing, shops, recreational areas. No doubt it will and things are in the pipeline but not for an extended period.
We have had friends who will drive to Muscat for a night out or stay down here for the weekend to get some entertainment.

Grand Mosque: Washing area

by victorwkf

Before going to the prayers, Muslims are supposed to wash themselves up at this nice washing area of the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. Different areas of the washing area are for cleaning different parts of the body.

Al Bustan

by call_me_rhia

Al Bustan is not a location but a hotel, the Al Bustan Palace... it's a 5 stars hotel located near Muscat and it's the best hotel in Oman. Entrance is free.

The reasons why one should visit it are many... first of all it's the landscape which surrounds it... including one of Oman's best bays. The second reason it's because it an excellent example of Omani architecture blended with modern architecture... you should visit it as you would visit a museum, as it's very tasteful.

A little jewel: look at the sand in the ashtrays: it has the hotel symbol. Put out your cigarette there and come back 5 minutes later. Someone will have cleaned it already and will have put the symbol in again

the best seafood meal ever

by call_me_rhia about green mountain restaurant

The green mountain restaurant is located inside the sheraton hotel in ruwi. Wednesday night it's their famous seafood buffet night - it's not cheap - but the amount and variety of food you can get is priceless.
Starters and desserts are amazing - first and second courses good - but they can't match the previous two. What did we not have? We tried to taste almost everything... i can safely say that we tasted every single starter (often more than once), and fell in love with the sushi and sashimi, the tunafish, the salmon carpaccio, the crab meat, the praws (in all sizey and tastes), the lobster tails and yes... the oysters and iranian caviar, too. And all the other fish whose name I do not know in English. As for desserts... I fell in love with the chocolate fountain... I guess I coated everyhing in chocolate.

The coolest Chinese restaurant in town

by tamerinho about Wok of Life

Wonderful restaurant, and tasty food. Nice decoration, very spacious, they need to lower the A/C power though as it was freezing.

Name is WOK OF LIFE .. bringing back the Dire Straits famous Album/Song to memory.. while still pointing out to the Chinese cooking utensile .. The WOK.

Apart from that the team is very gentle, and professional, mostly all the staff is from Nepal.

Back to food, portions are big, but extremely tasty. Sweet and Sour Chicken, and also Chicken friend rice.
