Doha International Airport
by imran8852
There was nothing special about the airport & it was quite boring except for the prayer room. We didn't even manage find a money changer at the airport! But we choose to fly with Qatar Airlines because we needed to stop over somewhere & relax...Just can't stand the long flight without smoking! Nothing Special...It's was just a stop over.
Al Jazeera
by frankcanfly
The headquarters of the infamous Al Jazeera is located in Doha. The inauguration of Al Jazeera, coincided with the dissolving of Qatar's Ministry of Information in the 1990's. The Emir funds Al Jazeera heavily, and is one of the first truly uncensored news agencies in the region.
I know there are mixed opinions on this network, but I have overall respect for them. Like other networks around the world, they also operate on principles of truth and fairness in reporting, it's always a sliding scale . I think some people mix up 'opinion' with truth, and judge Al Jazeera harshly because they've aired footage that other networks wouldn't air. Though this fact is also true of many US networks as well. It just depends upon how open your mind is.
I regularly read their website to give myself a well rounded picture of what is going on in the world. They often test the limits of censorship, but I think that any respectable media company should.
The Beach
by Fedzo
the First getaway from Doha during the weekend is to go to the beach. People go there every weekend coz beaches are not so far from Doha, mostly a one to two hours trip.
more Beaches are recently open North of Doha, especially in AL-Khor area,
While in the South there is the most famous resort - Sealine - at ummsaid, where u pay an entry fee and then have access to the beach and the pool, and restaurants.
U can also rent a room or a bangalo for the weekend.
Filipino Stores
by mikoykoy about Souq Al Asiery
This place in Doha is called the Filipino area. If you are craving for some Filipino food, there is the Kamayan restaurant. If you want siopao or mami (chinese noodles) or hopia, there is the Manila Bakery. If you want some canned goods and instant noodles, one can visit the Pinoy Supermarket. Filipino foods Average
Doha airport and stopover possibility
by hydronetta
Unlike what I've read in report in Skytrax, I found Doha airport just fine for what it mainly is: a transit airport! Modern, spacious, though embarking the planes always takes place with buses.
The duty free is nothing to duy for specially for electronics, but if you happen to be a smoker like me, then it is a heaven on earth because cigarettes came 1/3 of their price they are sold in Greece.
It proved to be a busy airport specially at might time. If you happen to spend the night at Doha in case your flight is next morning, then you're given a voucher with your hotel name on it. Then after waiting some time (which seemed endless) you pass through emmigration control (a long queue but quicly qoing through) and then you look for the van to your hotel.
In Doha we stayed at Al Sayeed Hotel probably centrally located which was a nice hotel and we were given the previledge to have dinner and breakfast which both were gorgious. I suspect most of the clientele were travellers like us!!
In case you consider stopping over in Qatar think carefully as hotel prices are high!!
