Souq wandering
The new souq area has really been built up to represent an old nostalgia of what Doha used to be like. I have really enjoyed exploring some of the areas around the souqs and see what new shops have developed and others as they change.

I don't get to travel often but will be in Doha a few days. What is the advised and cheapest way to exchange money, or access my american accounts. I do not have AE.
Also, a cell phone would be convenient while there. Any information on cost and ease of a prepaid phone that can be rented or purchased there would be helpful.
Thank you!
You can use your American bank card to withdraw money (riyal) from the bank machines. I think you need the "Plus" sign on the back of your card. There are banks everywhere, you could exchange money there as well.
As for cell phone, I don't know about renting, but you can visit a Qtel store or dealer and purchase a cheap pay as you go phone. These could be found in any mall. The credit for the phone is called "Hala" and can be bought in any amount.
When are you going? There are some big events coming soon! Check out www.qatarliving.com for tons of local info.
Enjoy Doha!

The entire population of Qatar is just about 600,000, about two-thirds of whom live in Doha. Interestingly, the actual number of Qataris is much smaller--the remainder of the population is made up of a huge contingent of guest workers and expatriates. The guest workers--doing manual labor, service jobs, and so on--tend to come from India and Pakistan, which is why the local English-language newspapers contain a huge volume of stories from those countries. The hordes of expats work in oil and gas companies, the financial industry, and infrastructure development.
Umm Slal Mohammed has some very distinct traditional homes. Just on the outskirts of town is this built up complex from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It includes two towering structures as well as a private mosque within an earthen "fence".
This is the other mall in Doha. This one is a spartan one floor compared to the behemoth four story Carrefour mall. The Hyatt mall is actually a decent place to shop. The place has a grocery store (Giant Stores I think) that has a bakery, fresh produce and a butcher. They also have a lot of home goods, electronics, pretty much everything. Within the mall are some fine jewelry stores (skip 'em and go to the souqs), a decent food court, and the typical mall fare (electronics shops, clothing stores, photo stores, etc.) This is a good place to head if you live pretty far from the Corniche as you don't have to go so far into town to get your shopping done. The bakery has some outstanding local treats as well as a good variety of international food. They also have a great section for fresh nuts, beans, and grains. Not too exorbatant. Pretty reasonable prices as far as I could tell.
Karwa Taxi - courteous drivers. You feel safe to travel because the drivers were trained for more than 2 months in order to know the major thoroughfare around Doha. Cars being used are all new and equip with GPS navigational system.
