About Qatar Palace Hotel ... or other recommendations on budget/low-priced hotels in Doha?
by mishyq
Hi, I will be in Doha in Dec 13-15, 2008 and am trying to look for accomdation now. One of the (budget - presumably those costing < USD $150) hotels lonely planet recommended is Qatar Palace Hotel, 44 Al Asmakh St. Their website was given as www.qatarpal.com.qa, however the link doesnt seem to work anymore.
So I was just wondering if anyone has been to Doha lately and had actually stayed at the hotel and what do they think of it. The information and reviews on it is so sparse (i cant even find a single picture of Qatar Palace Hotel online!)
I am concerned as i am a single woman traveller and would not like to end up not finding the hotel exist anymore there.
Also, my budget for hotel stay would preferably be something costing around USD $150 or less or stretching a bit (< $200), and at somewhere central (ie walkable to Corniche or Souk).
Can anyone provide suggestions? Another hotel i had in mind is Al Mourouj Inn (located at Old Salatah Museum Street Behind National Museum, Doha, Qatar)
Thanks!

You could try the Movenpick Hotel.
I stayed there earlier this year.
It's clean, quite, cosy and Swiss.
It's about ten minutes from the airport.
A Superior Room or a Standard Room would cost you roughly USD 500 (for 13 to 15 December 2008.) The Superior Room has the, er, superior view :-)
Enter your dates at http://www.movenpickdoha.com/ and see for yourself what the rooms look like and also what's included.
One extra convenience is that you always find taxis waiting at the hotel.
Have fun.

Oops, the third sentence should read:
"It's clean, quiet, cosy and Swiss."
By the way, the Qatar Palace Hotel's site is a victim of hacking.
See this pleasant notice: http://www.qatarpal.com.qa/Dr.3yoon.html
You can also see some of the uninspiring pages still online:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=+site:www.qatarpal.com.qa+www.qatarpal.com.qa
From what we see of it, the hotel looks gaudy and a bit seedy too.
Check out the picture of the only suite they have.
http://www.qatarpal.com.qa/suite.htm
If that's what the suite is, I wonder what the rooms are like.

yeah, i think you are right. the website was probably hacked or something. thanks for the info you provide. i think i gonna avoid it. it sure looks dodgy now that i have seen some pictures.
movenpick is nice... but a tad expensive :). by the way, since you have lived there before, can you tell me how far is it from the Souk and Corniche and central part of the Doha city?
anybody has any other suggestions? now i am thinking about http://www.gloriahotel-doha.com/services.php
http://www.gulfhorizonhotel.com/index.html
anybody has live there before and have some positive things to say about it (ie. clealiness, taxi accessibility, etc)?

Well, the Movenpick Hotel isn't really at the heart of the business district.
But with taxis plentiful and cheap, no destination is at an expensive distance.
What makes it better is that traffic in inner Doha is far from heavy.
That allows you a great amount of leeway when going somewhere.
If you are OK with spending a bit more for a lot more comfort and safety, pick the Movenpick :-)

Hi mate, When i came to doha, i have stayed with Movenpick towers and ist a nice hotel but price wise a bit expensive. But itys good place to stay with. U can alos try budget hotels like ROYAL QATAR. MAy foreigners come and stya here becos of the price. But u cant compare it with Movenpcik, marriot as well as Four Seasons. U can also try la Cigale and Ramada which is quite accessible to the city and lots of eat outs around Rmada and la cigale.
have a look at Movenpick towers

try ramada plaza in doha not that expensive http://www.ramadaplazadoha.com
Travel Tips for Doha
Pearls
by travelmad478
Before oil and gas were discovered in Qatar, the pearl diving industry was one of the chief pillars of the economy. The city of Doha's pearl and fishing fleet was its mainstay--hard to imagine today, when pretty much the entire country is dominated by the natural gas business.

Al Shaqab Stud opened it's riding club in April 1999 and now, under the management of Helen Fergus BHSISM., can boast a stable yard of over 45 working horses and ponies with qualified, English and Arabic speaking, staff available to you six days per week.
Al Khowr Towers
by bpwillet
The defenses around Al-Khowr still exist with these rennovated towers. They can be seen a long the drive towards the corniche. Thought they look too new to be from their original age, they are still standing in the same spots, keeping watch.
Souqs
by frankcanfly
Souqs are a general term for a shopping area. With the exception of Souq Waqif (The Old Souqs), most of the ones in Doha don't stand out as fascinating in any way. They fill the roads with neon signs, or appear within small buildings. They are a great place to feel the excitement and ambiance of the local population; a great place to people watch......
Find a map that shows you specifically which Souq to go to. They are generally grouped together with themes, such as Kitchenware, Electronics, Textiles.....
The foldout map from Marhaba has a specific Souq map that I recommend.
Dhow Cruises
by bpwillet
You can take tours from near the Sheraton Hotel or from the Doha Harbour out into the bay or to Palm Tree Island. It is a quick ride and only costs 30QR for the return trip. Getting out there is free!
