Stopover in Doha next week!
by zushness
Hi,
I will arrive in Doha at 19:50 and leave at 08:00 the following morning. I really would like to see the city but is there anything to see at night? Is it safe? I thought that I would have a full day but I misunderstood :-(.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

one think i can say anycountry in the middle east is is Very SAFE any time day and night regardless of your Gender, secondly there is not much to do Doha, you can go centre, but after 10PM everything is closed,or may be you can try one of the international Hotels or shopping centre.if i were you i would rather stay on the Airport.

Thanks Nasir,
My friend said the same thing (about safety). You are probably right about the stopover but I'm so interested in seeing Doha. It is a booming city and country and I would like to see the beautiful skyline. However, you are most probably right, I'm being unrealistic.
Thanks.

The best way to see the Doha skyline is on TV. That way you only see what they want you to see, and you don't have to see all the ugliness.
Travel Tips for Doha
dress code
by call_me_rhia
Although Qatari people dress in a very traditional way, there is no dresscode for foreigners - which means that you could wear whatever you like. In practice - while you are not required to wear a dishdasha or an abbaya - it would be so much better to wear some modest clothes, which means no shorts for men, no mini-skirts for women, and no tank tops for both.
Judging from what my (conservative) Libyan friend Hajer wears, I would say that if you are a lady, you really don't need to wear baggy clothes... She covers up very well, with trousers and long-sleeved blouses, but her clothes are very fashionable and tight-fitting. Occasionally she would wear a short dress over light long trousers. If you are not a muslim, there's no need to wear a headscarf... and no one will give you strange looks if you don't wear it.
MotoGP at Losail International Circuit
by jungles
On April 8th, 2006, the MotoGP event was held in Doha at the Losail International Circuit. Motorcycle racing is really not my thing, but it was fun to see it once. One thing I can say is that these motorcycles are FAST and LOUD! Earplugs are highly recommended; the moment at the beginning when they all rev their engines is particularly deafening. An annual Superbike World Championship event is also held here every year. As part of their quest to become the epicentre of sport, the Qataris have spent US$ 60 million on this world-class racetrack. Not that I know anything about racetracks, but it looks pretty impressive.
On April 29th, 2006, Losail will host Qatar's first four-wheeled motor race, the Grand Prix Masters World Series. This is a car race for former racing stars, with a minimum age of 45.
Directions: From Doha follow signs to the Doha Golf Club. Once you pass the Golf Club, turn right at the second roundabout onto the coastal highway. This is a large roundabout and will have signs pointing to Al Khor. The racetrack is 20km or so down this road in the middle of the desert. It's on the left, but the turnoff is to the right and leads through a tunnel under the road to get to the other side. Bring earplugs!
Al Khowr Gardens
by bpwillet
Just a few miles up the road from the town of Al Khowr you will find this desert oasis. It is more of a large park than any kind botanical exhibit but it is a nice lush green spot to stroll around. When I went we seemed to be the only ones there.
Falcon Souqs
by frankcanfly
At the Eastern edge of the Souq Waqif are two Falcon dealers. They place their birds outside on perches for people to see as they walk past.
I don't think they are on display all year long, probably only during the hunting season.
No Aerobridge at Doha Airport
by zuyao
It's funny there's no aerobridge at Doha International Airport. We have to walk down the stairs from the plane and board a bus that brings us to the terminal building. But on arriving in the terminal, the staffs are helpful and friendly. Most people arriving at Doha are on transit to somewhere else. Just walk straight ahead for security check. If your destination is Doha, turn right for the immigration counters.
For transit passengers, there will be some ladies just after the security check helping with any queries. The information display boards are also good. There are plenty of seats to rest while waiting for the onward flight. There is even a quiet room if you need to nap. Avoid long transit hours though because the airport is small and there is not much to keep you entertained.
In fact, the next time I come for transit, I intend to take a short tour of the city, if they allow me to. At least then I could have a look at the real Doha.
