It wasn't worth it. I paid 700 QR for a tiny single; I could have stayed at the Intercon or the R-C for 200-250 QR more, and I would have gotten MUCH more value for the money.
The Mercure Grand is in an old building in the middle of an old district, and it shows. When the driver dropped me off at the hotel entrance, I found myself wondering if he had made a mistake and taken me to the wrong place. The entrance was run-down, dirty, and generally crummy-looking. To get to the reception area I had to go through a run-down lobby and take an elevator up two floors.
The rooms, corridors, and other facilities were tattered and worn; the door to my room looked as though it been broken down and replaced in the frame; the locks were purely cosmetic. The room smelled bad.
The service wasn't bad, and the staff were helpful, but the building itself was a wreck. I'd suggest paying the extra money to go to a nice hotel. This was too expensive to be considered "budget", and too nasty to be considered "nice".
The pool looks great -- on the web! In real life it was closed and full of rubble. Maybe they are renovating it? I don't know. I expected a working pool because one was advertised...
