How to spend 12 Hours in Doha Airport

by Gichuck

Hello folks. My daughter (out of email contact at the moment) has a 12 hour stopover next week in Doha Airport, en route from Bangkok to London. Any suggestions about how to make best use of the time? Many thanks for your advice, in advance. GI Chuck, Cabinteely, Ireland.

12 hours at Doha airport you cannot do much: if I was her I would go to Doha city, spent some time there and come back for my flight - sha can probably get visa on arrival as Irish citizen. The airport is quite small, a few restaurants there only, not many other activities. Internet lounge is often full.
She should ask at the airline company for accomodation. Some time ago they used to provide it for free to passengers who had to wait longer than 6 hrs at the airport for transfer.

Travel Tips for Doha

The Desert

by travelmad478

The Doha landscape is pure desert, flat as a pancake and with maybe one tiny, scrubby bush every fifty meters or so to break up the sand and rocks. It's a good thing this city is located right on the sea, otherwise there would be nothing whatsoever to look at!

Wind Tower House

by frankcanfly

This type of architecture is common within the Gulf region. These towers were historically built to bring cool fresh air into the home before the days of air conditioning.

In the Doha area, there are many 'new' examples of this type of architecture, such as at the Ras Al Nasaa restaurant. This photo is of one of the original ones, located just off Grand Hamad street in Najada Shopping Plaza. It was built in 1935 and restored in 1982.

Camels

by frankcanfly

If you drive on some of the remote roads, and on the desert tracks, you're bound to encounter some Camels along the way.

Just know that if you strike one with your vehicle during daylight hours, you are liable to repay the owner. Costs can go up to $30,000 US!!

In my experience, the camels haven't had the trademarked 'hostile' personalities. The camel in this photo came right up to our vehicle. At first, we positioned ourselves to keep the truck between us, but she just waited for us to come up and pet her. She turned away and continued her exploration when she was done with us. I think she was looking for food from us.

Local flavors

by bpwillet about New "Old" Souqs

Just wandering around the old souq area in Doha you will come across different sections of vendors. Just the smells alone will clue you into the area where you can buy fresh spices, organic honey, fresh dates, cashews, and specially prepared sweets. You may be able to try some of the cashews or pistachios for sale or even try some tea with dates. There are also places where you can sample the various types of honey. You will definitely know where you are just follow your nose. For some spices they are charged by the kilo. However some spices like saffron are considerably cheaper than what you would find in other areas.

Doha Airport

Delightfully efficient airport which I used for my connection from London Gatwick to Bangkok. The staff were fully prepared, and the whole process was extremely quick and easy, I was outta there in no time!
