Doha's skyline
by call_me_rhia
Doha's skyline is basically West Bay... this is where big towers are in the making, with lots of glass and excellent modern architecture. Somehow they mostly look sober, not outrageous - except for maybe the Aspire tower, which looks like an incinerator.
In January 2009 there were more or less 50 towers being built... the most striking ones should be - once they are completeed - the Dubai Towers - 437 metres high containing offices, shops and a luxurious hotel. iishall go back for it, one day.
Say hello
by bpwillet
One of the greatest things that you can do in any country is just say hello. English is widely spoken in Qatar and quite well. It is looked highly upon if you start a conversation first with a merchant or anyone else you may require something from. Qatar is a very modern country but the form of Islam practised is very traditional. Many of the women will be fully veiled and many of the men will be dressed in the traditional white gown. Any type of dress that you feel may be appropriate will be acceptable in most locations in Qatar.
Asian Games Advertisements on Buildings
by mikoykoy
I was really astonished on how the organizing committee and the business community in Doha was so involved and committed to make the Asian Games a real success. For advertising, they even used the facades of the building as billboard advertisement for the Doha Games.
Kudos to DAGOC.
Giant Mall
by mikoykoy about CITY CENTRE
No doubt the most visited shopping mall here in Doha. The mall has 2 food courts, supermarket, large parking space (which really cannot accommodate the number of patrons visiting the mall), internet cafe, ice skating rinks, bowling alley, amusement arcades and lots of boutiques.
My favorite store is Splash, Gant, FCUK and Timberland.
I was surprised also that this summer they opened their water park for kids.
Look out for days when they go on SALE as they drop down the prices as much as 50%.
Garveys
by frankcanfly
Garveys is the name of a 'European Family Club.' They've got a pool, gym, squash courts and a pool room. But what's the real draw here?? Well, the PUB of course! They have a liquour permit here, and you may drink here if you are a member. It's an expatriot bar, but other 'foreigners' can join for the day for 20QR.
They have Guinness on tap, and plenty of Belgian Weissenbier. They also have a nice pub menu. I tried a grilled steak with mushroom sauce and chips.
