Overall a pleasant expereince and we would return

The service at the hotel was outstanding - from check-in to check-out. Perhaps it was because we were there during the slowest time (summer) so I think that made the service much more personal. Despite the fact our flight arrival time was delayed from 12am unitl 2am we still found our hotel transport waiting there for us. Nice clean car and the drive was at a pleasant speed, Close proximately to airport (only 5min).

The staff were friendly and helpful - several times we requested additional water because we were fasting and they prompty responded.

Internet was fast, free and reliable.

No alcoholic beverages inside the room, but certainly during Ramadan more water needs to be available in the room.

Spacious bathroom with not only a bath but 2 showers, Bidet was a bonus - a contraption that I learnt to enjoy to use.

Food presentation (room service) was simple but elegant, However, we only recieved the arranged sahoor on the first night and then it was not brought the following nights even though we had organised it at check-in.

The size of the room was generous and spacious with a good view although the windows needed to be cleaned. We noticed a connecting door to another room which would be great for a large family - but the noise from the other room was too loud, not only hearing the Television but someone snoring!

Good location with a mosque near by. Close proximity to the Islamic Museum and Fanaar Islamic Centre as well as the famous soq and corniniche.

The hotel smell was very pleasant, Arabian ouud - no lingering cigarette smells that we had become accustom to in other hotels

Traditional majlis in the reception area, professional gym and swimming pool - opening hours could be modified -10am being a late start.

Overall a pleasant expereince and we would return to the Swiss-Belhotel in the future.

A special thanks for Ms Antoinette V. Concepcion, for her assistance and help arranging the booking and airport transfer.

Recommendations for Tour Operators?

by DaveSamaroo

Dear all: a few in the forum seem to have this problem but haven't yet seen an answer addressing it. I have two days free next week (July 1st & 2nd) in Doha and am thinking of doing an organized tour of the city and one to the inland sea. Is there any tour operator you can recommend that would do this with one person e.g. collect a number of visitors together for a tour? Do you know if the hotels typically organize this? Hotel websites did not say anything on this. Thanks

I cant name any but the hotel/conceirge will defenitely have brochures for several tour companies that do organized tours and pick up guests from different hotels and most likely will help you book the tours of your choice.

Travel Tips for Doha

A few boats still sailing!

by travelmad478

In Doha there is a small port where you can catch boats out to an island in the bay, the site of an amusement park. Not too many fishing vessels are still around, but there are a few of them too. This photo shows one of them cruising across the bay in front of yet another set of cranes, putting up yet more shiny new high-rises along the shore.

Orry the Oryx - The 2006 Asian Games

by frankcanfly

With the approaching Asian Games of 2006, the official mascot is popping up all over town.

It's Orry the Oryx. You'll find him dressed up in the costumes of several of the athletic events. He'll appear to you in the form of statues and posters all over the city.

This is the most obvious image of Orry; a huge statue on the Corniche that incorporates a countdown to the games of December 2006.

The games are scheduled for 1-15 December 2006. Book your rooms now. If you'd like to volunteer, they go to the website for more information.

Al Khowr Museum

by bpwillet

If you have your own transportation getting around to the northern areas of Doha or Qatar are quite easy. Follow the north highway to Al Khowr. Only about 40km north of Doha, this small fishing village is worth a quite look. The museum is along the corniche and entry is free. The exhibits include discussions on archeological finds, the pearl industry and the legend of the dhow. From the top floor you can get good views of the bay and small harbor.

City Centre Mall

by frankcanfly

City Center Mall is a huge four level mall near the Corniche and the Sheraton Hotel.

Inside you can find all the stores of a western mall. There is a store we refer to as the 'super walmart' because it's a large grocery store that also sells a multitude of household items.

In the center of the mall is an active icerink, you can rent skates on the bottom floor for as little as 30 minutes.

Qatar Airways

by ElCidRugger

In my humble opinion, the finest airline country in the world. I have never been as pampered in coach as I have been with Qatar Airways. Everything from the free travel kit to the unlimited drinks was a refreshing change from the smelly carcass that is Delta service. The stewardesses were beaming and their uniforms were clean and well kept. The planes were in pristine condition as well. If you fly into Doha, do yourself a favor and fly Qatar Airways.
