    My God, it's luxurious!

The W is an expensive hotel – a really expensive hotel – that offers a level of luxury in a region in which luxury has taken on a whole new meaning. I was able to stay here thanks to a massive number of points that I had accumulated through business and personal travel, and was additionally lucky in that the hotel management upgraded me to a suite that can only be described as decadent. The hotel is a beautifully appointed structure in the downtown of Doha near the Tornado Tower. Its lobby and common areas are filled with the sort of trendy, post-modern architecture and design that are characteristic of the W chain. The furniture is oddly shaped but comfortable; the lobby contains a lot of glass that has been sculpted or carved; and the lighting is in very interesting forms all throughout the public spaces. The room was a real treat. The lounge area was divided up into separate sections thanks to curtain-like hangings, with a swing and a large couch area. There was a working desk with all the necessary comforts of a home office, and a separate dining table, should you choose to order room service. The bedroom was smaller and cozy, with the round bed draped off by a curtain of threads and illuminated by a massive copper fixture. The bathroom was heaven on earth, with a rainforest shower, a massive mirror, and a deep tub – not to mention the Bliss toiletries!

Unique Quality: I’m not sure what to limit to the list of “good” aspects of the hotel. Let’s just go through some of the things that were lacking. The pool and fitness area were clearly not meant to be for guests actually looking to work out. The pool is somewhere to tan, and the fitness area was, at best, the size of a home gym. Obviously, you are encouraged to make use of the (paid) spa section. The members’ lounge, in which breakfast is served, was well appointed, with a delicious and varied breakfast menu. But it would certainly not hurt to have a separate, ventilated smoking section, as I’m not too fond of the taste of nicotine in my humus. I cannot complain about the staff, as everyone was very friendly and quite helpful, although they tended to ensure that things didn’t go wrong in the first place, minimizing your interaction with anyone but the servers and doormen.

Travel Tips for Doha

Abayas for women...or anything else they feel like

by travelmad478

The dress code in Qatar for women is quite accepting. Although local Qatari women are usually seen in full-length black abayas when they are out in public, women from other cultures are quite free to wear anything they want. I wouldn't walk around in a tank top and shorts, but reasonably modest, regular Western outfits are completely fine.

sledding in Doha

by terps94

If you miss the snow like I do and you wanted to act like a child again and sled down small hill sitting on trash cover well this is the place for you. Inside the arcade in Carrefour Mall is an ice slide where for 15 QR you get two turns to go barreling down the slide. We were lucky when we went because there was nobody there except for us we got to do it over 5 times. You can sit down the tube or go down the slide or you can ask the guy to spin you around for more excitement.. They provide helmet for portection but we didn't notice it until we were done and the guy told us to come back and next time he will show us the Canadian way..hmmmmmm..

Desert Dunes

by bpwillet

Something that you will notice in Qatar is the amount of desolation and sand. There is not too much greenery outside of manicured areas of some of the cities. But the desert is so worth the desert. At times it is not as easily accessible but worth the effort.

Nightlife-Irish Harp

by Kilted about Irish Harp

Take the lift down from the lobby in the Sheraton, and you'll get to one of the newer bars in Doha. The Irish Harp has a great athmosphere, live music, actually looks and smells like an Irish pub, and, unlike Irish pubs nowadays, you can also smoke there. The drinks are not cheap, but this has not deterred its customers.

The best Italian this side of Roma

by ElCidRugger about The Movenpick Hotel

Thursday nights at the Movenpick is Italian night and I wouldn't miss it for the world. They have an excellent buffet or you can order a meal for a reasonable price. The vino rosso is surprisingly outstanding, although I can't comment on the white wine as I haven't had any yet. My favorite is the lasagna, which is better than (dare I say it) some I had in Italy. Buon appetito! The lasagna! Served in a large Iron skillet, the top layer is covered in cheese and it is roughly five layers thick. Great stuff!
