The dress code in Qatar for women is quite accepting. Although local Qatari women are usually seen in full-length black abayas when they are out in public, women from other cultures are quite free to wear anything they want. I wouldn't walk around in a tank top and shorts, but reasonably modest, regular Western outfits are completely fine.
If you miss the snow like I do and you wanted to act like a child again and sled down small hill sitting on trash cover well this is the place for you. Inside the arcade in Carrefour Mall is an ice slide where for 15 QR you get two turns to go barreling down the slide. We were lucky when we went because there was nobody there except for us we got to do it over 5 times. You can sit down the tube or go down the slide or you can ask the guy to spin you around for more excitement.. They provide helmet for portection but we didn't notice it until we were done and the guy told us to come back and next time he will show us the Canadian way..hmmmmmm..
Something that you will notice in Qatar is the amount of desolation and sand. There is not too much greenery outside of manicured areas of some of the cities. But the desert is so worth the desert. At times it is not as easily accessible but worth the effort.
Take the lift down from the lobby in the Sheraton, and you'll get to one of the newer bars in Doha. The Irish Harp has a great athmosphere, live music, actually looks and smells like an Irish pub, and, unlike Irish pubs nowadays, you can also smoke there. The drinks are not cheap, but this has not deterred its customers.
Thursday nights at the Movenpick is Italian night and I wouldn't miss it for the world. They have an excellent buffet or you can order a meal for a reasonable price. The vino rosso is surprisingly outstanding, although I can't comment on the white wine as I haven't had any yet. My favorite is the lasagna, which is better than (dare I say it) some I had in Italy. Buon appetito! The lasagna! Served in a large Iron skillet, the top layer is covered in cheese and it is roughly five layers thick. Great stuff!
