Zenobia Hotel: Palmyra - the best view

  • The best hotel - Syria
    The best hotel
    by TheWanderingCamel
For atmosphere and an unsurpassable view, the Zenobia is the only place to stay in Palmyra. The rooms are comfortable, high-ceilinged and cool, the lobby is fairly basic but has a definite atmosphere of the 20s, the era in which it was built about it, dinner in the restaurant was surpringly good and breakfast is more than adequate. Same day laundry is available and, best of all, the ruins are right on the doorstep. The hotel is actually built inside the area of the ruins, the only hotel in Palmyra that is.
We've stayed there 3 times now, and would not think of going anywhere else.

Without a doubt, the best thing about the Zenobia is its location. Ask for a room on the ruins side (Room 1 has a sitting room with the bed and bathroom up a tiny, narrow staircase) and when you wake in the morning, open the curtains to a magical view.
The terrace once had tables that were column capitals - sadly most of them have been replaced by more mundane plastic affairs, but it is still a lovely place to sit in the evening with a cold beer and a bowl of olives.

    Noria: Hama's best hotel

  • Mensaf at the Noria - Syria
    Mensaf at the Noria
    by TheWanderingCamel
Badr Tonbor who owns and manages the Noria Hotel is very proud of his establishment, and so he should be. The hotel, right in the heart of Hama is well-run, comfortable and justly popular with Syrians and visitors alike. I prefer the big old rooms in the older part of the hotel (and they are quieter) but you wil have to ask for those as Badr does like to fill his smart new rooms first. The hotel is on the upper floors of its building and the lift nearest the street is minute. There is another lift at the back of the arcade that is a bit bigger.
All rooms are air-conditioned with fridges and satellite TV. Breakfast is served in a new, large room and a choice of European or Oriental breakfast is offered. Go for the Oriental, unless you like rather dry bread rolls and foil-wrapped cheese triangles.

There is a good cheap laundry in the arcade downstairs, as well as an internet cafe.

We had a marvellous dinner at the Noria, cooked especially for us. Lentil soup (Mr L's favourite),lots of very good mezze and a truly excellent mensaf. There was probably a dessert but after all that I can't remember.

Al Majed Hotel: Damascus - A cool green oasis

  • Cool, green - Syria
    Cool, green
    by TheWanderingCamel
With small but comfortable rooms and a quiet and convenient location, the Al Majed offers its guests both value for money and a pleasant place to stay. Beds are made up in traditional Syrian style, ie with cotton covers and only a bottom sheet, which may seem a little odd to Western guests, but they are always fresh and immaculately clean. All rooms are en suite, the hot water is plentiful, there is a refrigerator and television in every room, and when one of our party was ill and had to remain in the hotel for a few days with a companion while the group moved on, they were wonderful.

There is a restaurant on the top floor but it is the small, tree-shaded terrace, where during summer, breakfast in the morning, tea or coffee through the day and dinner in the evening may be taken, that is the real bonus of the hotel, as is walking into the cool green laneway that leads to it at the end of a day's sightseeing.

Unfortunately, the excellent Worker's Club restaurant across the way, mentioned in many guide books, is now open only to members.

Bait Wakil Hotel: The best hospitality I have ever experienced

The Beit Wakil is a 450-year-old building that has been faithfully restored to its original form. The courtyard is amazing, as is the lobby. Habib, the hotel manager, is very friendly and helpful. If you need something and the hotel does not have it, they will send someone to get it for you. For example, I asked them where I could find a phone card. Twenty minutes later someone from the hotel brought one to my room. Upon arriving, I asked Habib where I could find an ATM. He gave me directions, but he also borrowed me 2,500 Syrian pounds, which is about $50. I did not ask for it, he just gave it to me.

The rooms are simple, but Habib explained that he wanted guests to have as much of an authentic experience as possible. He wanted the building to look like it did 450 years ago, with a few added luxuries such as air conditioning and full-size bathrooms in each room. The breakfast, which is included in the price, is very good. Rooms go for $100 per night, plus 11-percent tax.

  • Peaceful courtyard at the Diwan Rasmy - Syria
    Peaceful courtyard at the
    Diwan Rasmy
    by TheWanderingCamel
Located down a quiet lane just a few minutes walk from the Citadel and the souq, the Diwan Rasmy is a perfect spot to base yourself in Aleppo. Converted from two mediaeval houses in the old Arab part of the city, its comfortable and characterful rooms open onto courtyards and balconies, some quietly enclosed, some with a wonderful view of the Citadel. Breakfast is served in a vaulted room that overlooks the inner courtyard which is also open at nigt for dinner or, in summer, you can eat on the rooftop terrace, again with a marvellous view of the Citadel.

The hotel has 32 rooms and 4 suites and offers all the usual facilities of a four star hotel.

With its sympathetic restoration of these historic houses, serene courtyards and surroundings, helpful and efficient staff and very reasonable tariffs, the Diwan Rasmy is a great place to stay.

    View from the Ziad balcony
    by TheWanderingCamel
with its central location, large comfortable rooms and good facilities, the Ziad is almost certainly the best hotel to stay in Deir-ez-zor. Whilst it isn't right on the river, it does overlook the side channel of the Euphrates that runs through the centre of town. It has a breakfast room but no other meals are available. It is only a short walk to the souk where there are several small cafes serving simple meals. (Deir ez-Zor isn't well-endowed with restaurants). Some rooms have pleasant balconies, all are air-conditioned and have refrigerators and television.

Al Faris Hotel-Palmyra: A down to Earth, friendly place to stay

  • Arriving to Palmyra on a bus, we were greeted by Mohammed, the owner/manager of Al Faris Hotel. We did not have reservations anywhere and it was hard to argue with $19 for a double room. The rooms are not that great, but it very close to the ruins.

The best part of Al Faris is the satellite TV in the rooms. There is not much to do in Palmyra at night, so having 700 channels to choose from is a definite bonus.

Mohammed is a wonderful host. We spent many hours the night we stayed there talking with him and other hotel guests. He can make arrangements for a taxi to drive you back and forth from the hotel to the ruins, to the valley of the dead and to the hilltop fortress.

After Safwan it was like heaven to come to Hotel al-Atlal. I got a room with high ceiling, fan and a sink. The bathroom is shared, but as I was the only guest it was like my own.
The owner is a nice elderly man, who speaks English and keeps the place very clean. There is a kitchen where you can make yourself tea.
For my room I paid 300 SP.

Hotel al-Atlal is close to many nice cafes and restaurants. And there is an Internet café just up the road.

    The view from the balcony
    by TheWanderingCamel
With big comfortable rooms, nice balconies, charming staff, good food and a view of Krak up on the hill to die for, the Al Wadi has it all.
It does get busy with holidaying Syrian families in the summer (particularly at weekends) but, for the rest of the time, it is a lovely peaceful spot and a nice change from the city hotels that you will probably be spending most of your time in whilst you are in Syria.

Apart from the view, the hotel is ideally placed for an early arrival at Krak to avoid the tourist coaches that do turn up later in the morning.
The ancient Monastery of St George is just down the road.
The evening chorus of the foxes that live in the valley is something you will remember long after you have left.

    From the balcony
    by TheWanderingCamel
Quiet comfort and style are the words that come to mind about Le Meridien at Latakia. Big comfortable rooms with a large balcony, all the facilities of a five star hotel, a delicious (and huge) breakfast tray of fresh bakery goods, juices and coffee to really set you up in the morning. Staying here (we've done it twice now) is very pleasant.

Sitting out on the balcony watching the sun set over the Mediterranean while relaxing with a long, cool drink before room service knocks on the door with dinner isn't a bad way to unwind after a long day of sightseeing in the mountains behind the coast.
Le Meridien points are recognized for upgrades to superior rooms.
