underground cell

There were two classes of room available: I took the cheaper one at $30. For that I got a tiny, windowless cell, deep underground. The lift wasn't working below ground level, so I had to carry my bags down a narrow staircase to get to my room..

There was room for the bed, a wall-mounted TV and my bags. Fortunately, I was only staying here for one night. I got the impression that very few people stay there longer than that. There seemed to be constant movement outside, with people checking in and out of the hotel. From the outside the hotel looks quite nice.

I paid S£1,500 (about $30) for my windowless cell. I think I should have bargained harder, like the drunk Pakistani guy who checked in just after me.

Far from "spotless"

Do not believe what Lonely Planet wrote about Al Majed. It is not "spotless." In fact, the two rooms I inspected were pretty dirty. (I did arrive at night and did not have a reservation, so these might have been the worst rooms in the hotel.)

Al Majed offers rooms for different budgets. I stayed in one of the lower-end rooms, which was $30 per night for a double. I liked the location and the breakfast included in the price was decent. I don't think there are many good options under $100 in Damascus, so this might be as good as it gets.

Nice Place, nice personell

Nice budget place to stay. Not so far from Old City. The only hotel of this price range with web site, so booking is easy.
Very helpful staff, esp. Mr. Bayan Bahlak

Use their restaurant only for breakfast. For other meals find some place in the city.

Unique Quality: Double room with TV, shower, A/C - from $20
Cards welcome.
Internet access is possible from a PC in the lobby.

Cool, green oasis

Comfortable rooms, reasonable rates and a quiet and convenient location mean the Al Majed offers its guests both value for money and a pleasant place to stay. Beds are made up in traditional Syrian style, ie with cotton covers and only a bottom sheet, which may seem a little odd to Western guests, but they are always fresh and immaculately clean. All rooms are en suite, the hot water is plentiful, there is a refrigerator and television in every room, and when one of our party was ill and had to remain in the hotel for a few days with a companion while the group moved on, they were wonderful.

Unique Quality: There is a restaurant on the top floor but it is the small, tree-shaded terrace, where during summer, breakfast in the morning, tea or coffee through the day and dinner in the evening may be taken, that is the real bonus of the hotel, as is walking into the cool green laneway that leads to it at the end of a day's sightseeing.

Unfortunately, the excellent Worker's Club restaurant across the way, mentioned in many guide books, is now open only to members.

Al-Majed

$30 for a double per night.

Unique Quality: Because it is away from the main streets, it is quiet. Saroujah district is a nice part of the city to be in...old and central, and the neighbourhood by this hotel is not at all touristy. Yet it is within 5 minutes walk of the main streets of the new city.

A touch of arabian kitch

by hechippo about Al Majed Hotel

We spent three nights in this hotel We booked through internet . We didn't get satisfied at all. As prices were more expensive than average in Damascus we expected better rooms, but in fact they were small, badly finished ( mainly bathrooms) and service was not so helpful than in the rest of the country. Even some insects could be detected.
By night you could be awoken by a strange noise of water leaking on your own ac machine. or disturbed by one of the maintenance guys who kept his food in our room's freezer Quiet area and a good restaurant.
Freezer, satelite TV and AC.

Quaint, affordable guesthouse / B&B options in the Damascus area?

by lizva

Hi - A friend and I are traveling to Damascus soon and would like to stay somewhere affordable, but that has some character, is clean, and is conveniently located. Can anyone recommend a pension, guesthouse, or similar accommodation? Many thanks!

Try to do a search here by typing the name of the recommended places and a few older threads are bound to appear here with addresses, emails, and phone numbers ...etc. or google them
-Sultan hotel
-Salam Hotel or Al salam hotel
both very good ,clean and cheap albiet Sultan being old
Al Majed Hotel (very close to old city but not right in it )
City Hotel or AL madinah hotel
Afamia hotel
For hostels try
- Al haramein ( but not sure about blankets ,cleanliness in dorm style rooms but you can check current situation from travellers experiences on the net
-Al Rabie
which have single /double and dorm style
All of the above are in the old city (center where all the sightseeing, action is).
