Old City

My husband and I stayed at the Beit Rumman early May 2010. Prior email communication with the hotel regarding bookings was prompt and polite. Located in the Christian Quarter, this charming six room boutique hotel is convenient to all the sites and we found it without too much fuss, having been dropped of at Bab Toum. Stepping in off the main street, we were warmly greeted by the hotel staff and instantly wowed by the ornately restored, internal Damascene courtyard. This delightful square, featured a cool seating area which we were ushered to, to relieve ourselves of the weighty baggage we were carrying and relax with some local refreshments, while our booking particulars were taken care of. Our room was immaculate. Entrance to it, was through a traditional half-door inlaid with the most intricate mother-of-pearl design (which we were to discover was somewhat a speciality of the local furniture makers!). The room and en suite, like the courtyard, had marbled floors throughout and long luxurious satin drapes blocked out light from the courtyard and street windows. The antique wardrobes, tables and chairs were of dark wood and again inlaid with mother-of-pearl and provided ample room to empty the suitcases and settle in. The ceiling was a piece of art in itself! The hotel featured a quaint cellar bar/ restaurant, with great ambience created by the combination of lighting and stonework. We took ourselves up onto the roof terrace, via a spiralling wrought iron and stone staircase, to admire the views of Damascus. A great place to enjoy an aperitif and evening sunset over the Old City! And as if this all wasn't enough, the hotel staff surprised my husband with a large chocolate cake on his birthday- they had noticed his D.O.B. on his passport when we checked in!

Unique Quality: A beautifully restored, serene place to relax after a days tramping about the Old City. Great views from the roof terrace. Fantastic service from warm and welcoming staff.
