non-smokers avoid this one

We had a room on the first floor (2nd for Americans) and we were worried from the start: the balcony door didn't lock and the bath/shower was not clean. Also, there was renovation work going on on our floor ---glue can be such an awful smell!

The lounge area was a smokers paradise ---the smell on our clothes was foul.

Food! Well, it was fairly limited for our tour party. Our second morning breakfast even more so because a lot of the things were locked in kitchen cupboards and the sstaff on duty didn't have the keys!

The tour member next to us had a safe which refused to open!

DO NOT GO HERE UNLESS IT HAS IMPROVED SINCE MARCH 2006!

Not exactly central

I've only stayed once at the Carlton Hotel, and that was because someone else booked us in there. It was convenient for him, but not for us - like the nearby Sheraton, this hotel is a long way from the places that tourists would want to be in Damascus.
If you have business in this part of the city (the Canadian and Australian embassies are in this area but not much else) or don't mind getting taxis everywhere, then this is satisfactory, if boring, standard four star hotel. There is a swimmimg pool, several restaurants and a bar, a business centre, etc.

Unique Quality: The view of the slopes of Jebel Qassioun is lovely at night and in the day the mountain seems very close, but I wouldn't say the view was worth the price.

Carlton hotel- ok, not great, not bad

My stay was overall just ok.......but this hotel hosts wedding parties and they are very loud and affected my ability to sleep at least two nights..... The hotel does not have a separate ballroom facility so they hold these parties on the top floor, but you can hear the noise several floors below.......i am not sure how often this occurs, but it happend during two nights when i was there. The rooms are fine, the food is ok, overall it is an ok place, but the service is not the greatest.......but the price is right.....

Ask to be placed on the lower floors because they have parties there ( weddings, etc) and do not have separate ballroom, so the weddings are held on 6th floor, so if you are on floor 1 or 2, you should be ok. Otherwise , it can be really loud late into the night and early morning hours...

Unique Quality: The outside covered restaurant was nice......it had an outdoor feel with the trees,etc.....but they had it covered so you wouldnt be bothered by mosquitos,etc.......it was a nice place to have a small bite to eat and a drink
