I chose to stay at this hotel in Aleppo, after reading about it on this website; its age made it sound like an interesting place to stay and it is situated near the historical places of interest I hoped to visit. Arriving at the train station, I took a taxi, however the driver was unable to find the way to the hotel, as it doesn’t open dirctly onto the road. Eventually some local children took me from the road to the entrance of the hotel, through a maze of narrow alleyways, which made me feel I was travelling back in time. The exterior of the hotel, with its huge studded doors, added to this impression but the stand of CDs for sale in the reception brought me back to the 21st century with a start! The bedrooms of the hotel seem to be built around several beautiful internal and external stone courtyards, in the traditional style of the region. These communal areas are well maintained and have a calm peaceful atmosphere. I was allocated a room, not far from the reception, which was a very good size with two comfortable beds and a very good bathroom. The décor was very well thought out to maintain the traditional look, whilst providing all the comforts you would expect from a modern hotel. In particular, I noticed the splendid wooden shutters on the windows; one of which, when open, revealed a view of the citadel, however the paint used was not adhering well to the old stone walls and was rather messily separating from them in places. This rather detracted from the otherwise elegant appearance of the room.
Both mornings I had a good breakfast here of fruit, rolls or croissants, jam and coffee, served by helpful friendly staff in a fascinating room with its ancient brickwork visible on the ceiling and an original well by the stairs. An Arabic breakfast, of olives, local bread and eggs was also available. I ate at their restaurant on the roof and although the food and service weren’t exceptional, its stunning view of the citadel as the sun set and it was lit up for the night more than made up for this. I was pleased with the laundry service which managed to remove several “impossible” marks my dress had obtained during my trip on the Hejaz Railway and without being asked, the reception staff thoughtfully advised me that I could leave my belongings in my room until I caught my train back to Damascus that evening, as the room would not be needed until then.
