Spring Flower Hostel: Hostel in Busy Aleppo
  • Satisfaction:
  • It took us hours - and that is no exageration ! Hours to find this hostel, when we got there we realised that we had walked past the road it was on various times! Luckily for us, standing on a street corner looking tired and lost with our LP guide a kind Danish backpacker helped us out and pointed us in the right direction ! He was staying there too, and told us that they had room a little while before when he left!

And they still had rooms when we arrived! Our room was big as it was a triple room (all they had left), and the walls were exposed brick with a fan and a small bathroom. It was located on a busy street with cafes and shops all around. Upstairs on the rooftop there was a bar where you could buy a Syrian Cola or a Beer and look out across the rooftops of the city.

I'd heard of this place before I left the UK so had made allowances for the splurge. Lawrence of Arabia and Agatha Christie stayed here in its hey day but luxury was seriously lacking when I was here in 1999. Anyway I sort of grew on the place the longer I was there.

For all its misgivings it does have a great bar and the staff were freindly. It was just one of those things I had to do. So do I recomend staying here? Probably not, visit the bar during the evening to get a feel of the place. But if you must like me, perhaps just stay the one night.....actually better not do that, the place might grow on you too.

To Be Determined: Aleppo's Newest Hotel
A grand late Ottoman-period building, with views of the citadel, was being restored and renovated into a 4-star hotel in March 2008. I walked into the grounds and the workers allowed me to take the attached photos. They did not know the name of the hotel, nor when it would open, but only that it would be of a 4-star quality. It may be a little premature to write a tip about a hotel with no name that has yet to open, but given its excellent location and the beautiful building in which it will reside, I have no doubt that this hotel will be an excellent choice to stay at in Aleppo. What it may lack in charm compared to Beit Wakil and Mansouriya Palace, it will make up in proximity to the souk and views over the Citadel. This hotel is an excellent example of a rehabilitation project of Old Aleppo. I hope to update this tip upon the completion of the hotel.

    c) Aleppo: Tourath House Hotel. Fantastic! Delightful, helpful staff. Exotic decor. Delicious food. Good rooms with interesting ceilings. There' a bar in one of the hotel's caves! When I wanted to buy a good quality Syrian drum, the manager sent one of the porters with me as an interpreter etc. Also, a birthday cake was made on my wife's birthday.

Nice clean rooms, with own shower and toilet. Breakfast included, buffet. Syrian breakfast. The rooms are functional and the walls are thin. You can hear the elevator bells when it stops. We had a hole in the wall which was fixed with a plate. The street rumor was a bit louder than normal, but that did not disturb our sleep. Bed is comfortable and long enough for regular European people. (I spend 2 nights and half a day in the bed due to illness)

Located near the center. The big park is right in front of the hotel so you can see the colored fountains at night.

Tourist Hotel: The best budget option
  • Satisfaction:
  • This hotel is exactly across the famous Zahret Al-Rabie backpacker hostel. In November 2006, I payed SP 400 for single occupancy in a double-bed room. The room and bathroom were perfectly clean, and the hotel was silent, with very polite and kind staff. My room had central heating, air-condition, toilet paper, towel, 24-hours hot water, and a soap. There was also a night lamp, wardrobe and balcony. My first and the best accommodation in Syria. They keep your passport until you leave. As far as I know, there is no lockout, you can enter and leave anytime. They don't push you with trip offers etc.

Silence, staff politeness, hygiene, low price...

Zahert Al-Rabi: Backpackers place in Aleppo
  • Satisfaction:
  • Spent three nights there. Prices are normal for this kind of facility - about 2,5-3 euro per night. Manager (named Osama .o) speaks very good English and French. Unfortunately the rest of staff (one exception) speak only Arabic. Hostel is clean, no problems with water occured. I met people from France, Austria, Canada and Germany there - seems to be very popular among backpackers.

Laundry service Common sitting area Internet access Organizing trips to Qala'at Samaan (we paid about 20 euro for car and driver for half a day) and other places Close to Zahert are some very good and cheap restaurants. I recomend Khan Al Khalil, it's manager Ahmed is a great guy - a devout muslim looking for improvement of his English by conversation with guests (big dinner max 3 euro), spent great evenings talking to him and his friends. *Zahert Al Rabi means Spring Flower in Arabic

Stay there in June 2005. Had room 207, which is not too bad. I got this double room but pay for single occupancy (400 SP). They also have a dormitory on the top floor together with a restaurant where you can get a breakfast for 100 SP (haven't try).

Zahrat ar-Rabie (Spring Flower Hostel): Backpacker's Paradise
  • Satisfaction:
  • All budget accomodation in Aleppo is situated among tire-repair shops. Not very pleasant neighbourhood, but who cares :) This place is hard to find, though behind a plain steel door you'll meet helpful multilingual staff and nice eclectic interior. SP500 = $10 for a double room with shower. There is a roof-top terrace with small bar, TV and sleeping place. You'll get your brealfast if you manage to wake up Salam (the red-haired one) :) Internet access, books for hire or exchange - mostly guides. No place to park a car in front of the hostel, so ask Ussama or Salam for help.

al-Gawaher Hotel: A good Cheap Hotel
  • Satisfaction:
  • I never stayed there, but I know the place well. Because many of my guests stayed there. it's the best choice if you are looking for a non expensive clean and nice room. There are rooms with balconies,Air condition, a drawer for your clothes.

Actually the hotel recieves also arabs and local passengers but they will give you a room in the second floor where forigns stay usually. And you'll like the looby between rooms where at any time you can sit in and enjoy a coffe or tea and conversation with other travellers in the same hotel. 1- they serve free tea and Nescafe 24/7 2- Laundry at the same prices 3-exchanging money ,with good rates(usually better than official offices) 4- booking tickets buses or trains 5- they run trips under request and they have special plans for touring the area. they charge 400 s.p for a single room and 800 s.p for a double. and the breakfast is 100 s.p per person
