Hotel near Esenboga airport

by chinagazer

I looked through all your hotel tips for Ankara but did not find any hotel at or near the Ankara international airport. Can anyone recommend a hotel that is cheaper than the Büyük Anadolu hotel?
Are there several hotels (preferably not too expensive) near the airport?
My plane arrives early evening and I have my connecting flight the next morning. So I would prefer to stay near the airport. Any suggestion is welcome.
Thanks in advance.

There is one. It is called (not surprisingly) Esenboga Airport Hotel.

I think you need to send a query for the price info.

The Esenboga airport is far from the city center, so there is only two hotels near (5 minutes), the Büyük and the Esenboga hotel. These are not cheap hotels.
You must know also that the cost of a taxi is Ankara is outrageous. From the city center to the airport, it take 30 minutes to go to the airport and cost between 90 YTL and 100 YLT!
So when you enquire about the price of a room, ask too for the price of a transfert to the airport (it can make a big difference).
Depending at wich hour your flight is in the morning, it may be less expensive to stay in an hotel in the city center and take the Havas bus (10 YTL) from the ASTI (bus terminal)to the airport (45 minutes).
You must also know that the Esenboga airport is always empty! Nothing to compare with Istanbul. Arriving two hours before you flight is more than enough.
Oh, and one last thing: except in touristic areas, most hotels in Turkey never reply to email. You may have more luck in calling.

Travel Tips for Ankara

Ankara's lakes

by Tuna_ank

Ankara has 2 big lake. Mogan is at the Golbasi town. Eymir is the smaller river which belongs to Middle east technical university. But you may reach from Oran area and walk around the lake if you have extra time..

It's gonna be forbidden if Turkey joins EU!

by Pinat about Rumeli Iskembecisi

As I said above, it is gonna be forbidden once Turkey joins EU (I personally don't think it will ever happen but anyway that is not the point!). OK, but what is it? It is "iskembe soup". Iskembe is literally the tripe of a cow. You may not like how it sounds but the taste is great.

We used to go there quite often when we were at uni. Rumeli Ýskembecisi is in Kizilay, one of the busiest centers of Ankara. It's traditional to have iskembe soup after drinking heavy stuff (in Turkish case that would be raki of course).

They don't serve only iskembe soup of course but that is the most famous one. They have various types of grills and other kinds of soup as well. No alcohol is served! Iskembe soup!

Inside the castle an old village!

by mindcrime

I loved walking inside the castle of Ankara. The old town inside was a big surprise for me, I noticed many building that looked like some building I saw in North Greece (the old town of Ioannina for exable) and elsewhere in the Balkans.

The castle has two walls with a great gap of 200 between them! The inner wall was built in 7th century but the exterior wall was build on 9th century by the emperor Michail the Second. You will easily find the central gate because of the tower with the clock. Because of the clock is called Saatli Kapi (gate with clock). I noticed a small not impressive mosque inside the castle that was built back in the 12th century.

I didn’t have time to visit any of the Turkish restaurants that now are in renovating beautiful old buildings but I enjoyed the view from several parts of the castle. You can see the modern city but also some really old houses near the castle. The best views are from the eastern tower of the castle.

The locals inside the castle seemed really relaxed, the little children played around, the old women were selling cheap souvenirs. I hardly noticed 2 or 3 other tourists.

Visit Ankara Castle

by basak

Ankara Castle is one of the symbols of Ankara. It is argued to be constructed by Romans or by Galats. In any case, it is certain that the castle has been watching the city for very many centuries.

At the first glance the castle and environment does not look very attractive. Many of the buildings in the castle habitated by poor families and they are under bad condition. However, this place is full of hisory and there are lots of things to do in the castle and around it. Those old houses are being restored one by one and they are turning into touristic places. There are nice restaurants in the castle as well as nice cafes (i recommend Arzu Cafe) which you can enjoy the city view and drink tea-coffee. The Rahmi Koc Industry Museum and the Anatolian Civiliazation Museum (which is must-see place in Ankara) is at walking distance to the castle. If you enjoy antiques and old-objects you can enjoy Pirinc Han very much. There are Seljuk Mosques very close to the castle. Just in front of the entrance of the castle, you will see stalls of dry fruit-nuts sellers...If you walk around you can find the shops of many artizans. It is possible to sense the city life of at least 20-30 years ago due to those old shops...

Ziraat Bankası Museum

by serkanen

Ziraat Bankası General Directora building was built by Italian architecture Guilio Mongeri between 1926 and 1929. It is converted to museum at the 118th anniversary of the bank being the first bank museum.

The calculators and typing machines used at the General Directorate and the branches, crystal inkwell set, telephone sets, various gold and letter scales, bank door plates are among the valuable objects exhibited. Moreover important documents such as old inspection inventories and reports, circulars of signature, copy notebooks for communication used 60-70 years ago substituting today's photocopy, samples of saving and deposit bank books are in the collection of museum.
