Modern Ankara Background
by Kuznetsov_Sergey
As it is well known Ankara is the capital of Turkey and the country's second largest city after Ýstanbul. The city has a mean elevation of 850 m and as of 2007 the city had a population of 4 million people.
Following the Ottoman defeat at World War I, the Ottoman capital Istanbul and much of Anatolia were occupied by the Allies, who planned to share these lands between the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Greece, leaving the Turks only a small piece of land in central Asia Minor. In response, the leader of the Turkish nationalist movement, Kemal Atatürk, established the headquarters of his resistance movement in Ankara in 1920. After the War of Independence was won, the Turkish nationalists replaced the Ottoman Empire with the Republic of Turkey and Ankara had replaced Ýstanbul (formerly Constantinople) as the new Turkish capital city, on 13 October 1923.
Now it is the center of the Turkish Government, and houses all foreign embassies.
The city is famous for its long-haired Angora goat and its prized wool (mohair), a unique breed of cat (Angora cat), white rabbits and their prized wool (Angora wool).

Museum of Anatolian Civilisation
by MalenaN
This is a must see as the best artefacts from excavations made in Anatolia can be found here. In the basement there are exhibitions of Greek and Roman artefacts but the best part is the different rooms on the ground floor showing the pre-classical civilisations of Anatolia.
As you enter the museum you will start your tour from the right and come to rooms with items from the Palaeolithic period, Neolithic period (Catal Hüyük), Chalcolithic era, Bronze age (Alacahöyük), Assyrian (Kültepe), Hittite (Hattusas), Phrygian (Gordion), Urartian and Lydian eras.
The museum is housed in an old Han (covered market with workshops) from the 15th century.
The entrance fee is 10 000 000 TL.
It might be closed on Mondays.
Temple of Augustus
by Kuznetsov_Sergey
The temple is located in the Ulus quarter of the city. It is also known as the Monumentum Ancyranum was built between 25 BC - 20 BC following the conquest of Central Anatolia by the Roman Empire and the formation of the Roman province of Galatia, with Ancyra (modern Ankara) as its administrative capital.
The temple, on the ancient Acropolis of Ancyra, was enlarged by the Romans in the 2nd century. In the 5th century it was converted into a church by the Byzantines. They claimed it for the Eastern church until Muslims built a Mosque on the site, next to the tomb of Haci Bayram. Not the best Roman site I should say.
