More about Grand Okan

Happy at the Grand Okan

by TripAdvisor Member Blue-eyes-Blackburn

Sue & Mick

Having stayed at the Grand Okan for 2 weeks from June 13th, 2008, we can honestly say it was a very enjoyable experience. The staff are very friendly (especially our lovely maid!), the hotel is clean and comfortable and has a nice pool area. Although we had booked half board, we chose to eat out each night (this was no reflection on quality of food on offer at the hotel, but our choice having been to Alanya many times). It was quite an experience watching the diners dashing and queuing for their evening meal!

Paid to upgrade to sea view room, which was well worth it (providing you are on floor 3 or above, otherwise you may struggle to see the sea).

Previous reviews have mentioned the strict 'no food, no drink' ruling in the hotel rooms, this is true, but paying a little extra for a drink or snack from the minibar is not a problem.

Overall view - good value for money, will return and would recommend to friends.

Lovely Hotel

by TripAdvisor Member Sistabenji

Just returned from a 10 day half board stay at Grand Okan. Very nice hotel, wonderful staff, 2 mins from the beach...
We arrived approx 0030hrs, very tired and hungry, staff arranged a dinner for us, was not happy with the first room but they changed this immediately.
Staff couldn't be more helpful if they tried, rooms cleaned daily, maid even made swans with the towels on our beds :) nice little touch. Food was great, a wide choice and different dish each night.
I paid the couple of pounds extra for a room with sea view and it was worth it...beautiful view.
Would recommend Turkish Bath and Red Tower, Castle a little bit of a disappointment.
Would I recommend this to my friends YES... Would I return to Grand Okan...MOST DEFINITELY.
I chose this hotel with the help of Trip Adviser and was not disappointed.
If you're thinking of going to Alanya then definitely consider staying at Grand Okan.

Great food

by TripAdvisor Member Rupul

I have just returned from a week at this hotel. It claims to be a 4 star however in reality it is a 3 star plus. This is based on the fact that the decor did not reach western 4 star standards. The staff were generally helpful. The rooms were cleaned everyday. There are rooms overlooking the sea and others that over look the main road. I had the latter as I was not prepared to pay the extra supplement. It was noisy but as soon as the doors were closed one got used to it and it was not a problem. The beach is a two minute walk from the hotel and the centre is a 20 min walk. The dolmus stop is right outside the hotel.
I stayed 1/2 board. The breakfast was nearly always the same. However one must bear in mind in all hotels breakfast fare is the same, eggs, ham, cheese, cakes, cereal olives etc. Dinner was very good. I do not go abroad to eat the same food as I do at home. Limited western food but plenty of Turkish specialities.
Great hotel for the price.
Thank you Grand Okan but please price in YTL and not Euros.

Okan's ok!

by TripAdvisor Member jasu

Just arrived back fron a weeks stay at the Grand Okan. First time ever in Turkey - & as seasoned travellers did wonder what to expect,. but all of the recent recommendations by friends were certainly justified.
We had booked our hol through the internet with seperate agents responsible for flight, transfers & accomodation.
Flight with first choice - economy short hawl so a bit cramped but generally ok.
Arrived at Antalya airport mid afternoon in hot sunshine (35 degrees plus) only to find our tranfer transport that we had booked & paid for was not there! After searching the coach park several times & asking several airport staff & agents we were offered a lift on a minibus with a couple of spare seats that was booked to take passengers on an incoming flight down to Alanya - 70 + miles away, This was of course at an extra charge of 50 euros / £40 & caused even more delay!
Transfer time is apparantly 2 hours but in reality in at least 3.
On arrival at the hotel, we were welcomed by friendly & efficient staff.
About the hotel:
Location - about a mile out of Alanya town with its pretty harbour The hotel itself is on the main road into the town & is surrounded by shops bars & restaurants The back of the hotel overlooks the beach.
Rooms - basic & lacked storage space but very clean & functional Bathrooms ok with a decent size walk in shower. Had a problem with a leak above the shower from the room upstairs but was quickly resolved after being reported. Our room overlooked the beach which was lovely on an evening watching the sunset. A word of warning - drinks & food brought into your rooms from outside will be confiscated & returned to you on checkout. Each room has a minibar/fridge stocked daily with a variety of drinks & nibbles. A bit pricey - can of coke = 1.75 euros
Food & drink - Breakfast - a good selection of hot & cold plus cereals, bread, cooking station for fried eggs & omlettes. Snack bars by the pool & beach provide lunch at a reasonable price. Dinner - buffet style with a good variety of salads, pastas, meats & veg. The buffet opens at 7.30 sharp but its worth getting a table 10 -15 minutes beforehand to watch the 'race for food'!
Bars - lobby, poolside & beach, Prices ok eg beer 2.25 euros for half litre, spirits between 3 & 8 euros, cocktails 7 - 10 euros. Happy hour between 10 & 11pm means buy one get one free - again watch the 'race'!
The Green Beach restaurant behind the hotel on the beach provides an alternative for lunch or dinner. Take your room key/card & claim 15% discount on food & drink. All food from snacks to mains is first class. The staff are very friendly & accomodating. Dining here is a must!
We ate here several times during the week & for our last night enjoyed drinks & steaks for £22.for 2
A snack lunch of burgers or pizza plus drinks will cost you around £12 for 2
Overall the holiday was brilliant. The staff are great & so helpful. Amanda, the general manager helped us out with the transfer problem so thanks to her we were reassured, Her & her family are lovely people & will make sure your holiday is memorable & enjoyable

Expected alot more from a 4 star

by TripAdvisor Member Edrush

I will write a review based on 2 things. Hotel and location

Firstly I wouldnt say this is a 4 star hotel, more like a 2/3 star. We stayed in the Premiere Inn near Gatwick the night before and I would say that is a star above in terms of room layout and comfort. The hotel itself is about 5 storeys high, one side a main busy road that runs through Alanya and the other side the sea view, all be it a road between the Hotel and the actual beach (so not really true beach front).

If you are on the busy road side then unlucky because it will be loud I assure you. if you are on the sea view then it can be still loud and if your not higher than the 3rd floor then your sea view is actually blocked by the many high trees that line the road between the hotel and the sea.

The room itself is pretty basic, 2 single beds with rock hard matresses that we pushed together to form a double bed, a 21" tv, lounge chair, cheap pine dressing table, wardrobe so small that you couldnt fit 2 persons clothes in and drawers so dirty and lacking in depth that you couldnt fit more than 3 t-shirts in them. The bathroom was relatively small with some plastic slide door for the stand up shower and no bath. the shower head itself was pretty much limescaled up and as a result water sprayed in directions other than your body. All in all, not very impressive

One thing that did get me is that when we arrived in our room there was a note telling us NO food or drinks allowed in the room and will be confiscated if found. There solution to this was to provide a minibar that had about 8 cans of drink, 2 chocolate bars, and 2 small bottles of water. Now considering we were told we couldnt drink the tap water and that each small bottle cost 1.5 euros (approx £1.20), I think this there idea of a joke and more ways to fleece money out of you. We resorted to hiding water bottles in our beachbag and then hiding them in our locked suitcases to prevent them being confiscated.

The swimming pool area was ok, as was the bar. The games room if you can call it that consisted of one pool table, one table tennis table, a plastic darts board and alot of dust and grime

Good things about this hotel where friendly staff, roomc cleaned daily and only 20m to the beach. In conclusion, sorry Grand Okan need to do much better!

The resort:
I'll make this pretty brief. The beach and scenery are lovely and cannot fault this. The turkish baths are a must and there is a 13th century castle atop a mountain that costs about £5 to get to. For english tourists you will be well outnumbered by our european cosuins and so the resort is geared towards them. The only major gripe is that this area of Turkey is expensive! A cocktail is about £8 everywhere you go and even 2 cans of drink will set you back £2.50. Annoying as I chose a non euro zone because I thought it was cheaper.
Lastly, beware that this resort seem to be incredibly geared towards selling you things (trips, clothes even taxi journeys). Haggle with everything and my tip is when they give you a price take off 50% and start from there!

Hotel ok but disappointing customer service

by TripAdvisor Member karabaghill

Hotel is nice enough good location, not a 4* by UK standards but good 3*. Problems were paper thin walls and loud bar music until 1am (but thats Turkey!) Our main disappointment was not getting the sea view we paid for. Originally put on the land side, then moved to a ground floor pool view which we had to wait for as the room was not cleaned, only going for 2 days it was not worth moving the next day but then we were still not offered a sea view only one floor up. İ had to ask for free drinks with dinner as compensation, nothing was offered, and this was granted begrudingly for the first night. The next day İ had to go to reception many times to ask about drinks with dinner the following night, the receptionist kept saying she had to ask her manager who was always busy! Finally we were told it was ok but it was very hard work and İ resented having to ask since they were in the wrong over the room and should have offered something as compensation. The final problem was when we checked out, there were some drinks on our bill that we had not ordered. The receptionist was insistent that we paid then she would investigate, surely it should be the other way round and since we were leaving we decided it was too tiring to pursue - it was only 3 euro but with the room problem İ felt it was very bad customer relations.
A disappointing wedding anniversary trip for us. The free dinner drinks only just covered the extra we had paid for the sea view. İ would rather have had the view İ paid for. Not what İ expected from a 4* hotel with a British Manager.

Would recommend this hotel to anyone

by TripAdvisor Member letstravelUk

I cannot praise this hotel enough. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, the food was good and varied, we had entertainment 4 nights of the week, the room was spacious with a balcony overlooking the sea, and it was in a great location. What else could you possibly want?

good position poor food

by TripAdvisor Member aopengland

asked 3 times for an extra pillow and only when my husband went to reception and got a little bit angry did we get the extra pillow we requested, found food both choice and quality very poor eggs and still more eggs for breakfast in any form you can imagine took one look at the soup at evening meal that was enough salads where the same every evening and the so called hot meals were barely warm and it was turkey or chicken most evenings if I was asked to recommend this hotel I would say be prepared to eat out

by TripAdvisor Member coldturkey

Just got back from Turkey last night, had a great holiday althought i must point out a few things,
Firstly i think the Grand Okhan is in an excellent location, once we got to see where other people where staying on the coach trip to the airport we realized that we where very luckly, alot of the hotels in Alanya are outside of the main resort and away from shops, the whole coast for around 6 miles is hotels but only about 2.5miles has shops, so make sure u google earth your hotel!
My main problem with this hotel was the food, i was very dissapointed with it, the soup tasted like flour and water with extra water, all the pasta which is usually my favourite was pre cooked and very soggy and over cooked, the tomato sauces where very bland. The puddings are all turkish by the looks of it, and u get lots of whipped cream like egg merang type stuff, very sweet, lots of cold custard slices(no pastry!)
Althought maybe i just didn;t like turkish food, but i did find the food very poor.
One of the bad points to going for dinner, each night we would sit and wait while the chefs prepared the buffet, they don;t let you go for the food until it's all laid out, so u end up with a restaraunt full of people all waiting for the final whistle, then you get an almighty stampeed for the food, be careful as u may get crushed! the germans seem to be very fast to get the food first, but really this was a horrible experience, if you wheren't quick then you'd have to que for 15mins.

We had a seaview room 3rd floor, nice room, no complaints hear at all, free air-con, 2x single beds which u can move together.
Although please be awhere this hotel does not allow food and drink brought in from outside!! instead they supply you with a mini-bar with high priced drinks+a few chocys, we had are drinks confiscated! and a bad letter left, so we ended up having to hide all our drinks in the suitcases in the morning before going out, the local supermarket shops are very cheap, water 22p cans 40p-60p, european chocoloates are expensive and other brand names but shops are very good.
Eating out, pizza's cost from £3 - £6, Drinks are most expensive at £1.50 per v.small glass, £2.50 per large glass which is about 300ml.
UK Cigarettes £18-£20 per 200

Overall nice hotel, but most of the staff cannot speak english fluently, mostly german staying at hotel when we went, overall very good hotel, 3+

Hi I have booked to stay here in June 2014 and I have noticed all prices are in euro, do they expect lira?

Welcome to VT, Jenny. Hardly anyone will see your question at the bottom of this hotel page so it's best to re-post it on the VT Alanya travel forum, where you are certain to get helpful replies. Here's the link:

My own understanding, and experience, is that it is always, always best to pay in the legal currency of a country. If another currency is accepted then you can be certain that the exchange rate will not be in your favour (not least because the seller must cover his/her own costs). Whilst the hotel may quote prices in euro...and will certainly be very happy to accept euro cash from you, for the reasons I've given above....I'm almost 100% certain that if you pay by card you will be charged in lira. That's certainly been my experience in Turkey and elsewhere, but do ask on the forum as well.
