Garden of Sun Hotel
3 Plaj Didim, Altinkum, Turkey
first and last time in turkey
firstly i am an average working class bloke with low expectations... we booked allinclusive at garden of sun hotel and here is my breakdown... firstly hotel is very very clean upon arrival we were greeted with some fruit juice and a biscuit, given arm band and room key.. hotel was very nice, air con rooms, tv with full turkey channals the problem we had was that we had a door between our room and could hear everything from the neighbours and their demon son damion (but thats another storey).. back to the hotel... swimming pool great very big there is plenty of facilaties but unfortunatley you have to pay for them all.. eg. pool table 10tl for an hour etc. the staff were neither friendly or not friendly they were simply clones or androids they just shuffled about the place and answered yes no matter what you asked(which was quite annoying when wanting the time).. the entertainment.. well i'm not sure what this was, they would take you round back and dance like people that had never heard of music before so unless you were a new born baby this is probably best avoided... the food.. where do i start, all in all a good selection although some days everything seems to taiste the same.. the problem been is getting food, it is simply like a cattle market with no order.. whilst us brits seem to organise a formally que.. this not apply to other nations especially turks who look at you like you are mental as they walk in front to stack their plates with enough to see them through the next several decades which shortly after they just dissregard and leave on the table.. basically meal times became the most stressful part of the holiday and by the end of the holiday we were eating out... unfortunalty we must of picked a bad week because 95% of the people booked into the hotel that week were turkish time share buyers and they were clearly favoured, we experinenced many times turk only situations from umberellas near the pool for turks only or going to get a pancake and they suddenly stopped serving to brits!! all in all our experience would of been far more enjoyable if it had not been plagued by such horrible rude turks pushing and shoving.. trying to cram in to one of the 2 very small lifts whilst you trying to get out.. arrrrggggggggg.. as for the resort was ok.. town 5 min walk from hotel as well as fun fair type place.. couple of bars round the hotel.. all ok except the one directly outside where they tried to make a move on our women with in 5 mins of arriving whilst we went to shop and then later at night told they dont like english after beliving we were not english !! ha idiots.. the other bar to the right( as facing looking out front door) very friendly and a good night.. there is a couple of bars at back both ok.. penguin bar is good on a thursday.. all in all hotel was fine if you not looking to spend all your time there but as we found turkey is very expensive even tho there is no prices on anything.. i will not be going back to turkey again but this is not because of the hotel or the resort but simply because of the people there... and here endith my review.. next year.. the germans
Unique Quality: air con in rooms... clean downstairs toilet
More about Garden of Sun Hotel
holiday from hell
when me and my friend first arrived at the garden of sun hotel we were amazed, it is a beautiful hotel. From the second day of being there we were both ill suffering from severe diarrhoroea and sickness. we still dont no how this was caused it was either the food, the water (which we thought we werent drinking but later found out the bar staff were using their tap water instead of bottled water) or hygiene reasons. their were rumours flying around about the chefs going on strike and that health and safety being called into the hotel we dont no if these are true or not. We were not able to leave the complex due to constantly needing the toilet or worrying about needing the toilet if we did leave.
We lived on a diet of bread and butter all week as that was the only thing we could even think about eating.
Every person we spoke to at the hotel were suffering with the same illness. All i wanted to do was come home. Now i am home ive had to go and see my Dr as i am still very ill.
The bar staff and entertainment people were nice and fun to be around, i hope the hotel will be able to clean their act up because it does have the potential to be a brilliant place to go on holiday.
We were two young girls just looking to go on holiday and have the best time of our lives its just ashame we were confined to the hotel for the whole time.
just returned from garden of sun what a excellent laid out hotel
food was good but not to my personnal liking.
facilites were very good and staff were always on hand to help
not a lot of english spoken but lets face it we are in turkey.
night time entertainment was not very good but we enjoyed ourself . for a hotel just opened i was well impressed and will return with a little practice this hotel will be one of the best in turkey. mf ,ar shropshire
garden of sun
we have just arrived back from the garden of sun and if you are thinking of going there i hope this review helps. Our initial thoughts on arrival and getting to the room was ok nice room plenty of space, as we arrived in the early hours of the morning we saw little to complain about however !! breakfast time arrived and on arriving in the canteen sorry restaurant ,we were welcomed by the local population of flies lots of them. I say canteen because it was certainly the poorest ''restaurant i have ever been in and it reminded us of a works canteen.
This restaurant does cater for a lot of turkish holiday makers and so the majority of the food is Turkish you are in Turkey after all.So after sharing our breakfast with the said local fly population we got to look at the rest of the hotel. The pool was deep all the way round not good for those who are not so confident in the water but it is a big pool, the terrace area and area around the pool bar were ok but could do with some more shade. so far so good i hear you thinking ,not so Day 2 day of the poo every one you spoke to had the same sickness my wife spent hours in the local clinic on a drip her pains were so bad she was also perscribed anti biotics and pain killers and we spent the next three days doing very little due to the illness
The in house doctor and the clinic staff were excellent at all times and took the problem seriously although publicly woud only state it was travellers'' upset stomach'' this was rubbish as we know from talking to staff that some of them were ill also. The problem seemed to improve during week 2 but then we were eating out most days so much for all inclusive! would we go to this hotel again i think not 5 star no try 3 star maybe they will get their act together in time and find reception staff who can smile and consistent cleaning staff,as no two days were the same when the room was ''cleaned'' i could go on but you get the picture.
Garden Of Runny Bum
About 3 days into the holiday one by one we started to fall ill with diarrhoea . At first we put it down to the usual stomach upset that you can get when traveling abroad. But as the days went on the diarrhoea became so severe with major stomach cramps and then was accompanied by sickness. All 8 of us were experiencing this illness.
It soon became apparent that many of the guests in the hotel were also suffering from this severe bug. We all became very dehydrated and couldn’t leave the hotel room. One of the guests visited the chemist many times for us to purchase medicines to cure this illness but nothing was working.
We were entering our second week and everybody we spoke to was experiencing the same illness. We were at the stage where we couldn’t eat or drink because the food and fluid was passing straight thru us all.
We see a taxi turn up to pick up a man who was so dehydrated that he couldn’t walk. He was taken to hospital to be put on a drip but there was many taken to hospital including children. Everybody was coming down with it severely.
My 5 year old daughter became so ill that she lost 5 lb in weight and couldn’t keep anything down she also developed a temperature and had major stomach cramps.
At this stage we complained to the manager of the hotel who was already very aware of this problem and was starting to panic. He tried to assure us that this bug was in the whole of the resort and not just this hotel. He also told us that as a precaution they had changed their water supplier and that the food was being checked and that the kitchens had been inspected. They also stopped serving ice and started to add lemon slices to all drinks to aid digestion.
The Manager was trying to find the source of the problem because he knew it was within his hotel and not the resort. One of the guest visited local hotels within the area and spoke to lots of other holiday makers within the town and nobody else seemed to have any illness. Even the First Choice rep on our coach on our way home told us that there were no other complaints of illness from any of the other hotels she was visiting in the area and she had only heard of the major outbreak at the Garden of Sun.
Other than this the Hotel is beautiful.
Personally no problems stunning hotel!
I feel I have to defend this hotels as from a personal point of view we had an excellent stay at the Garden of Sun. We appeared to be lucky as we arrived 16th September the week after all the illness problems, and dont get me wrong there were serious problems that affected many people.
As a microbiologist I had no issues with the cleanliness of the hotel, state of the food or any other issues. I saw food temperatures being monitored at mealtimes, the pool water being tested and 'officials' at the hotel over the week. This may suggest at least they were taking issues seriously.
We drank our own bottled water (rather than the hotel 'bottled water') through normal cautiousness, (I know its all in - but at 40p a litre its worth potentially not geting ill....)
Aside from the illness problems others had;-
The Garden of Sun is a stunning hotel with an excellent pool and plenty of sunloungers and plenty of space for all its guests.
The food for 1 meat lover and 1 vegetarian was adequite and I think the salad (and chips?) at every meal did us good. Kebab night went down well with one of us too!
Rooms are large (one double, one single and one sofa bed) with a clean bathroom.
Staff were friendly and helpful for our simple requests.
Location is good - 2 mins walk from very nice '3rd beach' and dolmus stops at front of hotel to get you into town in 5 mins.
Entertainment wasnt brilliant but couldnt comment too much as didnt stay around for much of it.
Overall I'd advise people to remember to be cautious and in my opinion be wary of the water. But please do not be put off from this really nice hotel, especially if you have already booked a stay here. For what we wanted - a relaxing seven days, cheap deal, all inclusive with good weather (we're not fussy people) its spot on. Top Relaxing Holiday!
Altinkum is a nice resort, not the liveliest place but ok for a couple of drinks in town. Try out a boat trip after a local turkish bath and be warned you might get surnburnt if your not careful!
Currently at the hotel 26.09.06
I am currently stayıng at the hotel and ıts standards are acceptable but the evenıng entertaınment ıs poor......maybe ıt ıs now late ın the season?
The rooms (parents next door) are acceptable for Turkey and are cleaned daıly, but ınfortnuately the drawer space ıs lackıng.
The hotel ıs probably 3 - 4 star and not 5 star that you would fınd ın say Dubaı but you should not expect the same star ratıngs ınternatıonally as country standards vary wıdely. The restaurant ıs quıte bare and the food choıce now lımıted as I have been here for 4 days (only 9 days to go. However, good food practıce...takıng food temparatures wıth dıgıtal measurıng tools and clıng fılm over the salads etc. The all ınclusıve ratıng ıs not that good as the drınks are powdered juıces and the cheap local alcohol ıs poor. The bought ın alcohol ıs very expensıve.....brıng your own ın your suıtcase and drınk ıt over the holıday away from the receptıon!
The local bus servıce ıs very frequent and cheap ınto Altınkum, but when you get there you meet the pushy cafe/restaurant/shop staff standıng out of the front of the facılıtes. No matter what people say that the staff are nıce I do not trust them as all they want ıs your money, money and more money. OK your on holıday but gıve a rest!!!
Thge grounds of the hotel are OK and the water slıdes are good for a laugh. My daughter enjoys the small park to play ın wıth ıts slıdes, swıngs and seesaw and clımbıng frame. The chıldrens pool ıs very shallow and good for kıds up to the age of 50!
My wıfe and Father have had stomach upsets but I thınk they have probably drank the tap water......they wıll never learn! I am feelıng fıne at the moment as I travel a lot and know of the rısks.
I wıll probably not return to Turkey after thıs vısıt.......tıme to travel somewhere else.
13 days of sunshine.
Returned after 2 weeks on 23rd Sept.
The sickness is still rife with people having arrived a few days before we departed and being ill within 2 days.
I did not talk to anyone who had not been ill, with some having been hospitalised and put on drips.
The medication that my wife and I purchased from a local chemist did work for us,but I would urge anyone to get it before you experience the symptoms and start the tablets if you get diorhea immediatly (about £8).
The Hotel is generally very good with an amazing pool but the fact that it is a Muslim country means no bacon or pork in the restaurant which is rather regimented.
I only saw the odd fly in the restaurant and a food inspector was on hand recently measuring temperatures of all the foods, both hot and cold.
The whole sickness problem was covered up by our rep. who said it was 'chinese whispers' - what a joke.
There is a magnificant bus service into Altinkum town for 40p
with busses every 3-4 minutes.
If you like scotch, take your own!
local Gin and Vodka are drinkable with tonic.
Brandy is chargeable.about £5.
same food every day!!!!
returned from hotel earlier this week. Hotel was five star, very clean
and comfortable. Severe lack of entertainment,1 night karoake
apparently there was a turkish night but very few people realised
until after the event, no notices posted lack of communication.
With the exception of one or two members of staff they all were
very serious, not sure reception or bar staff knew how to smile.
Plenty of food but breakfast was the same every day with no
variation, lunch and dinner were variations of the same basic
meal, salad bar was very good.. view from front of hotel where our room overlooked looked like beiruit. Back of hotel was very
impressive, gardens and pool lovely. could only get coffee from
pool bar even at night. Drinks were very weak, could have drunk all day and still been sober. Having spoken to travel rep, all points we had raised had been raised by other people, was told she met
with hotel manager every week but they were unwilling to change
the way they were running things. will return to turkey but no -way
to this particular hotel. with new management or management
that listened, this could be a very good holiday destination. possible teething problems, if could be sorted would be worth a second stay.
SHOULD NOT BE 5 STAR
Just returned from garden of Sun in October. It was ok but could have been better. As quoted before the restaurant was fly infested and meals were ok. The waiter in dining room had an attitude problem and was grumpy if you ordered drinks when restaurant closed. I had complaine about him and would not be served by him again therfore had to get others to get my drinks which was an inconvenience. Other waiters were helpful as well as bar staff. Receptionists were doom and gloom and never smiled. Animation team seemed to have their favourite holiday crowd and had them participating in most activities and surprisingly these were the one who won most of them! Would go back again but would not pay the price i had as felt it was not worth being a 5 star.
