Travel Tips for Antalya

Patara: Patara antik kenti...

by tolgaturan

Patara derived its fame in ancient times from the oracle of Apollo situated there. Oracles in the temple, which was kept open only during the winter months, sought answers to questions concerning the future.

When one enters the ruins via a stabilized road, the first monumental structure to catch the eye is the city gate. According to the inscription on it, it was erected in the name of Mettius Modestus, the Roman governor of Lycia-Pamphylia around 100 A.D., and his family. Busts of the governor and members of his family were supported by consoles on either side of the triple arched gate, which is in the form of a typical Roman triumphal arch.

On the north-east slope of the hill is a well preserved theatre.
On the western side of the ancient harbour, which is now a marsh, is a granary which a Latin inscription informs us was erected in the name of the Emperor Hadrian. This enormous structure, completely intact except for the roof, contains eight long grain bins. Eight separate doors along the front of the building give entry to these storage areas.

The Antalya tram

by hokomoko

Theres a 6 Km's long tram line with;single track and 10 stations . 3 articulated tram units with orange, red and blue top ;operating between Kara Ali park and Mezbaha district in East West directions. Its cheepest way to capture Antalya's city life to ride this older (ex Nurenberg) but very cute trams. less than 1$ you can get best pleasure.

Another double track new tram line named "Antray" is in service by February 2009 with 15 stations linking northern areas of the city to the south the coast. two lines are not connected but there is a very close tram stop at "ismetpasa" and with a short walk you can reach to the older tramway.

Aspendos Amphitheatre - almost 100% intact

by fachd

Aspendos amphitheatre is one of the many sites to see in Asia Minor and one of the best preserved. It has a shape of semi circles with diameters of 95 metres. It has capability of seating for 7000 spectators.

Around 155 BC Zenon the Greek architect built the amphitheatre dedicated to the Gods and the Roman imperial family Marcus Aurelius. During the reign of Marcus Aurelius Aspendos city became prosperous and the amphitheatre was the central culture and economical welfare for the rich Romans. The imperial family and other rich Romans were entertained by operatic play, the Gladiators, wild animals fighting to the death.

The Seljuk’s Empire restored the amphitheatre and was used as caravanserai. The theatre is still used today, the theatre acoustics, stage decorations all testimony to the Greek architect success.

Antalya waking up

by Ritchie_Lionheart

"A warm welcome"

THe first impression when coming to Turkey: Tourists are treated with respect, are always felt welcome by the local Turks.
Second: Turks want to be recognized as Europeans, even though 95 pct live in Asian Anatolia Hospitality is at its best in Turkey, and many Turks are also good at languages, above all in German and English, but many speaking also some Franch, Russian, Arabic, Greek or other languages.
Antalya has become the largest city in southern Turkey: it grew from 40'000 to more than 1 million in little more than 5 decades. Sun on more than 300 days a year, historical landmarks that date back thousands of years, a marvelous landscape that goes from the depp-blue Mediterranean waters to snow-capped mountain peaks within a 40 km radius around the city.
A hint: if anyhow, avoid this coast during the July/August summer months, it is getting as crowded as most other Mediterranean regions.
