Travel from Antalya to Fethiye

by yowatc

We (4 of us) are spending a week in Antalya in May and are considering spending a second week in Fethiye, although I'm open to other suggestions. I'm considering renting a car since we must return to Antalya at the end of our stay. Can anyone offer any advice on other means of transportation, its cost, and travel time? Also, I'm looking for places to stay in Fethiye or Olu deniz. Preferably not all-inclusive and not too expensive.

Thanks Sinan,
The drive along the coast sounds beautiful. For the trip back to Antalya from Fethiye, how many hours will it take on the inland route? I'm really looking forward to seeing your country.

and now for where to stay...... Olu Deniz has many pansiyons, on the left as you enter the village. At the time you are going things will be pretty quiet for them, so you should be able to go up to one you like the look of and negotiate a good price. I suppose you should expect to pay around 20 pounds pp a night B&B. Back up the hill towards Fethiye town there are hundreds of places to stay in Hisaronu and Ovacik. The place itself is a bit tacky, Little Britain , but the B&B will be cheaper, in high summer we never pay more than 10pounds pp.

You must also visit Kayakoy whilst in Fethiye. It is about 10 mins drive from Hisaronu, and is fascinating.

I think you would enjoy Kas too, have a look at the VT pages about it, so maybe stay a few nights there and then go on to Fethiye. And if you want to visit Kekova, (you must, it is wonderful!)you can get there by car from Kas,it is clearly signed off the Antalya -Kas road. Once there you can hire a boat from the Fishermens Cooperative and go out to see the sunken city.... a better option than the boat trip from Kas, which takes all day, most of which is just sailing!(and can be "unsettling" if you don't have good sea legs!)

have a great time. I am envious as I cannot go there until summer!!

Thanks Pennie,
I've been trying to decide whether to book a place in advance or not. After reading your post I think we'll just choose a place when we arrive. I'd like to see a bit of the nightlife as well as the beach. Are we better off staying in Fethiye and bussing it to the beach or vice versa?
Thanks so much for the info.

Take a walk in the harbour and then climb up to take a picture.. like we did.. The day is very nice to walk.. The atmosphere at nights are also very nice..

the Heracles sarcophagus

by marsistanbul

This sarcophagus was discovered during excavations conducted at Perge and has been exhibited since 1962.It is from the group of tombs classified as "columned sarcophagi of Asia Minor".The lid of the sarcophagus is of the roof-shaped type with a triangular pediment at each end.On each of the pediments are carved Medusa heads that were deployed to protect the grave.
HERACLES;he is the son of the God Zeus and mortal Alkmene.Hera, the wife of Zeus, can't bear the fact that her husband betrayed her with a mortal and hates Heracles, the offsprings of the relationship. That is why she let Heracles to go mad and kill his wife and children. When Heracles recovered from this madness he wanted to purify himself from these sins. The oracle of Apollo,he consulted told him to enter the service of King Eurysthens and through this service he could expunge his sins and attain immortality. The King, who was on the side of Hera, ordered Heracles to complete twelve missions, each harder than the previous one.

The Agora Of Ancient Perge

by H-TownJourneyman

The agora in ancient Perge was the center of trade, as well as a social & political meeting area of the city. There are many still-standing colonnades and porticoes to the various shops that surrounded the perimeter of the central courtyard of the agora. The shops were organized around the agora in regards to what they specifically traded or sold, and apparently each shop had a sign that identified it as such. Some of the mosiac tiles that were along the floors of the shops are still present as well.

The ancient city..Olympos

by marsistanbul

The ancient city is in the 80 km south of Antalya and it is first in Antique Lycian area.Giving onto the Mediterranean to the east, the ancient city Olympos is divited in two by Akcay creek. In its character of a port city Olympos shows a different structure to other ancient cities, surviving to date,it is throught that the word Olympos originates from Greek. However, while the source and meaning of this name has not been conclusively explained it is likely that in the ancient Anatolian languages,it carried the meaning of High Mountain or Great Mountain.

Aspendos

"the outside"

Amphitheatres were usually built into a hillside, though some like that at Side were free standing. The shape of the theatre had natural acoustic properties that helped carry the sound to the seats at the highest level. The actors wore masks which also acted as megaphones.

"The theatre"

The seats are made of stone and apart from being cold to sit on are extremely hard, so if attending a concert or play, it is best to bring a cushion to sit on.
In Roman times the actors wore high shoes to make themselves look taller and be more easily seen by the audience.
