Patara Ruins
by sandysmith
The ruins behind the beach of Patara are still undergoing excavation and more things are being discovered - like the recent discovery of the lighthouse. The site which can be explored now is much more extensive than our previous visit here which we only briefly passed on our way to th beach. Now its worth spend a good hour or so exploring the temples and stadium before relaxing on the beach. Take some water with you as it involves quite a bit of walking - wish we could have got an earlier dolmus as it was already hot by mid morning. Start at the triumphal arch - just past the toll area - and work your way towards the beach via the ruins on the way. Parts of the site reminded me of Ephesus - especially the area of the paved road - could just imaginre the apostle Paul walking down here when he stopped at patara on one of his missionary journeys. Its worthwhile checking out this page to get an idea of the area and what can be see. Many fragments are laid out in the fields just waiting to be categorised and sorted.
Plateau of Bezirgan
by sandysmith
Bezirgan is some 17km away from kalkan - up above on a mountain plateau, far removed from the environment of the fishing village. Its an authentic working Turkish village - residents continue to follow the pattern of their ancestors, spending summers in the coolness of the mountains and winters near the warm coast. The village is nestled on an ancient lake bed of rich soil which supports a luxurious coat of fertile fields yielding grains and chickpeas, lush orchards and grazing land for sheep and goats - the patchwork quilt appearance best appreciated from the road as you approach Bezirgan. In the south west corner of the village is a large cluster of ambars. These are traditional wooden grain storehouses. They share many characteristics with Lycian rock-cut house-type tombs and may be a last vestige of Lycian house construction methods.

Patara Beach
by Diana75
Patara is famous not only for the Lycian ruins that can be visited nearby (Patara was once a large port city of ancient Lycia) but also for a wonderful sandy beach.
It is said that this beautiful beach, actually an 18 kilometer-long strip bordered on its ends by mountains, has the finest sand in Turkey.
A small fee is charged at the entrance.
