More about Barut Hotels Arum

One of Side's best hotels

by ChristinaC about Arum Hotel & Apartments

This have to be one of the best hotels I have stayed at! The service is fantastic, and even though it's a 5* hotel, the atmospher is relaxed. Definatly the right place to stay if you want a great vacation!

We stayed 3 persons in an apartment, with view over the pool area, with under 10 meters to the pool, which is huge! In the apartments ther is a kitchen with everything you need to cook, if you dont want to eat out every night.

The hotel is located around 3 km outside Side, but we hardly got outside the hotel, as you will find everything there, and you only have to walk like 400-500 meters to find a street full of shops, resturants and bars! The hotel got it's own beach! But what I was most amazed over the pool area, which contains 4 pools. One for children, one "indoor" pool, and then two huge pools (2000 qm), with pool bar.

At the hotel you will find these things to do, which is free of charge:
Fitness Center
Gymnastic Room
Squash court
Tennis court
Table tennis
Beach Volleyball
Mini Club (4-12 years)
Children playground
Turkish Bath (Hamam)

At the beach there is all kinds of water sports!!

Just a GREAT hotel!!!

Great Hotel shame about the food

by TripAdvisor Member Portishead

We have just returned from a 2 week holiday at the Arum hotel which we booked with Thomas Cook. We would agree with most of the previous reviews that this is a very good hotel and in many respects is probably the best that we have stayed at in the Mediterranean.

The rooms are smart, spacious and comfortable and the décor of the hotel itself is of a very high standard. During our stay the majority of guests were German, although there were also a fair proportion of British guests. The hotel staff were excellent and almost all spoke good English so there was no problem whatsoever is being understood.

The pool area is fantastic and the gardens which lead down to the beach are immaculately maintained. Both the pool area and beach have plenty of sun beds available, although you needed to reserve your place by about 8.00 each morning if you wanted a place right next to the pool. Whilst this did not particularly bother us, it is something that I think the hotel should put a stop to.

Prices in the hotel for drinks were quite reasonable and the entertainment provided by the excellent animation team was very good and surprisingly professional.

We booked a number of excursions with a local tour company and whilst they were a bit of a step into the unknown and usually involved a trip to a jewellery shop or market, they were good value and much cheaper than the same trips offered by the reps.

There were only 2 negative points to the hotel in our opinion, the first being that there is very little in the surrounding area apart from other large hotels and a small selection of bars and shops, none of which are particularly appealing. Side town itself is about 2/3 miles away and is reached either by Taxi or by Dolmus which after a certain time in the morning only takes you as far as the bus station from which you then get a small land train to the edge of the shopping area.

Side harbour is quite picturesque and the ruins are worth a quick look, although you can see most of them from the road without paying the entrance fee. The town itself is a bit tacky and touristy and you are constantly harassed by shop and bar owners trying to get you buy things. After 2 visits we really couldn’t be bothered with the hassle and did not return again.

The second negative was the quality of the food which in our opinion was rather disappointing.

The food was bland and unexciting and there was only a small choice of main courses most of which were repeated on 4 or 5 occasions during our 2 week stay. We also spoke to many guests who complained of being ill (we felt unwell for much of our holiday) and by the second week we tended to stick to basic food such as soup, bread, chips and turkey!

Despite this we did have an enjoyable holiday and if you are looking for a relaxing break by the pool and access to a good beach then this is definitely the hotel for you.

One final word of warning, do not buy anything at the airport as the prices are extortionate (4.5 euros for a can of drink!)

Our family (Mum, Dad and daughter 12) have just returned from the Arum Hotel & Apartments in Side, Turkey in July/Aug 2006. We stayed in the Hotel on a half board basis. The hotel is German run and is fabulous. It is extremely clean and tidy with very friendly and helpful staff at all levels. Nothing was too much trouble.

The rooms are large and air conditioned and cleaned daily. The gardens and flower borders around the hotel are beautiful. The food is very good with a large selection of Turkish/European and kiddie food each day - they even do a diet selection!

Prices are reasonable for a hotel of this calibre. The pool is very warm, like getting in a warm bath. The area around the pool is tiled so take flip flops or you might fall over when the area gets wet. Pool towels are provided.

The evening entertainment is good considering they have a considerable challenge doing anything with 4 languages to consider (Turkish, German, English and Russian). If you can make sure you're there for the Garden Party where the restaurant is literally taken outside to the garden and a complete evening of entertainment, including fireworks takes place. Wonderful.

You can walk into Side 5k- during the day walk via the beach - it takes around 30-40 minutes and is very entertaining with all the beach vendors selling paragliding, banana boats, jet skies and other tours.

We travelled with Cosmos and their local tour guides were excellent giving good local information when on tours and spoke good English Although guides in Side said their tours were cheaper - they could not guarantee an English speaking guide. This may be fine if you're going to Manavgat market but not so good if travelling to see Aspendos or Perge.

Don't buy anything at the airport on the way home. Everything is very expensive - about twice the price of anything at our 4 star hotel. This includes drinks, snacks and presents (Turkish delight, etc) buy these locally and pack in your case. The airport is light and airy with plenty of seating - but take drinks with you.

Would I go again - the answer is Yes!

It's still great!

This was our second fortnight's holiday here in three years and we were not disappointed on this second visit. The hotel bedrooms, facilities, food, garden and pools are all still excellent. As part of the point of travelling abroad is to meet people from other countries we were not at all bothered by the large numbers of Germans and Russians. Side is a wonderful place to visit via a cheap taxi or dolmus, or via a walk along the beach. We'll come back to the Arum to join the many other repeat customers.

pampered and relaxed

We (2 adults & 2 teenagers) have just returned from the Arum Hotel and had a great holiday.
The hotel is spotless and the large number of staff were very helpful and pleasant. Large number of Germans but if you are prepared to be addressed in German it is not a problem when you start speaking english. Some waiters are not so good at English but they get there in the end!! the staff work very long hours.
Plenty of sunbeds either by the pool if you were up early or on the grass! towels provided fresh everyday with the towel card given to you on first day
The food was amazing, not the place if you are a "meat and 2 veg " man! great selection of different foods at the buffet. We had altered bowel habit!! which was probably from the change of diet, lots of salads and european type food!
The garden party deserved a medal for the organisation, food and preparation. Basically the whole of the dining room was moved out onto the grass!
The evening entertainment had some good shows but some were mediocre. Difficult to cater for all nationalities. The animation team were very good, all professionally trained dancers and provided all the entertainment day and night., eg archery, step aerobics, water gym, mini club, darts....
The pools were clean and warm, pool bar was an added extra.
The card system used by the hotel for drinks and snacks were a good idea, but ask for itemised bill before you pay and check as mistakes are made.
Watch out for the resident photographer, he took photos of our teenage daughters without us and tried to invite them to the beach, maybe innocent but it was dark and they were sensible to decline his invite!
The hotel disco was a great haunt for our girls as they were safe within the grounds, security on the beach 24 hours a day to stop strangers coming into the grounds.
The beach is nice, the sea directly in front of the sunbeds is rocky but move to front of next hotel and it is fine, great waves and really warm.
The trips from the travel agent were well organised, Aspendos theatre is well worth a visit especially if there is a show on as well, we saw the turkish version of Riverdance!
White water rafting was great, but make sure that you book with a company that uses helmets as the rapids are good so if you're thrown out as least you are protected.
The shops and the markets are interesting. Not the place to go if you don't like hassle as believe me you will get plenty. If you are polite and say 'no thanks' keep on walking they soon get the message. In the intense heat we had it was hard to remain polite when the temps were 45° +!!
Side was a nice town, harbour and ruins were interesting.
Would we go again, definitely. It is meant to be the best in Side and I think it would be very hard to beat!!

Relaxing, clean and wonderful staff.

by TripAdvisor Member ClaraN

I have just arrived back from the Arum where i stayed with my boyfriend for 2 weeks, and as you can see from the subject line, we loved this hotel. As has been mentioned on previous posts, there is plenty of sunbathing room around the pool, as well as on the beach. We both found the hotel staff to be helpful, friendly and pleasant. The hotel itself is spotless and we had air con in our room. We really could not fault the hotel, there was a wide range of food both in the morning and at night, and we really didnt find the drinks expensive at all, considering it was a 5star hotel.

The only let down of our holiday was the constant hassling we received when walking past any shops or restaurants, either within Side or at the strip of shops at the end of the road from the hotel. Although this is tradition in Turkey, and we had been pre warned of this, we still found it annoying as the people are relentless. Apart from this, we had an overall enjoyable holiday!!

I would go there again

by TripAdvisor Member Azma

We spent a week at the Arum last week and absolutely loved it. The hotel staff were so nice and friendly. The place was full of Germans but that did not bother us at all as the place was so nice. The pool area was nice and the pool bar was very handy.
The food was lovely every day, I still miss breakfast times in the mornings. The hotel staff go out of their way to ensure you are being seen to and are happy. The hotel bar has live music every evening and the band was quite good. The beach is literally 2 mins from the hotel. As for shopping, we found the local shops just outside the hotel were much cheaper and had more variety compared to the touristy shops in the old town of Side. We went into Antalya for a day and found that a waste of time and money cos you can get the same stuff in the local area and at a much cheaper price.
Overall it was a great holiday and I loved the hotel. I was really sad when we were leaving and would love to go back there.Special thanks to Mustafa who was so nice and helpful

Very nice hotel but......

by TripAdvisor Member Toontastic

We have just arrived back from our stay at the Arum, and I must admit that the Hotel itself was very good. No matter what time of day it was you could always see someone cleaning or maintaining it in someway. The rooms, the facilities and the Hotel were what you would expect from a 5* Hotel. Excellent can not fault the Hotel.

However, when it comes to the Hotel staff, that was a different matter. Their first language was Turkish, then German and if you were lucky English. On numerous occasions we ask for something in English, the member of staff would look at us blankly, mutter something about not understanding, and then they would go and serve a German. We would be left standing wondering if someone was going to serve us or not. If they did not understand us they made no effort to help us at all.

My husband ask for something in English, the waitress replied in German, my husband then said "I am not German I don't understand you". The waitress replied (in english) "I don't speak English". Then walked off.

Now, we knew this Hotel catered from mostly Germans, and we had and still have not got a problem with that. But I don't expect to be treated 2nd class just because I am English.

Another point I would like to make, after reading the postings on this site we took mostly Euros with us, with a small amount of LIira. We did not receive one bill in Euros, every bill was in Lira, when we asked for a conversion to Euros the restaurants used their own conversion method to recalculate the bill. Thus ripping us off.

I would reccomend the food at The Brothers and The China Court. Very good food at both.

Excellent Hotel shame about the hassling in the town !

by TripAdvisor Member Bongoloid

This Hotel truley deserves it's 5 Star's, it is immaculately kept and the staff are very polite. If you want a holiday mixing with polite Germans, Scandinavians and Russians this is the Hotel for you, if you want a Bacon and Egg breakfast, lunch in the Red Lion followed by a football match with English guests around you then this is NOT the place for you.

The pool area is spotless with surrounding grass area leading down to the beach, the pool itself at it's deepest is chest level for a normal height adult and has sloping entance exit so is ideal for children. We went into Side Old Town to eat most evenings not because we didn't like the Hotel food but because we wanted to experience some of the local culture. The only down side to this was the incessant hassling from shop owners and restaurant staff, even when you politely decline their invitation to enter their premises they can get quite rude even to the point of scaring the children, one jeweller in the main street even swore and shouted at us when we decided the trinkets the kids were looking at were too expensive, I think he assumed that as soon as you enter his shop you must buy something. We spoke to an English lady who had been to Side several times and she said that a town 7K west of Side used to have the same problems with hassling and the Mayor put a stop to by saying that until someone enters your shop/restaurant you may only politely indicate you are open and not to hassle the tourists. It would be very good idea if Side's Mayor did the same as we did not look at any shops except in the Hotel for fear of upsetting them if we didn't buy anything.

The restaurants on the whole were very good, with the exception of "The End" which really is only there for the view as the food and service were awful. All in all apart from this a very very good holiday and when the Mayor can make a ruling we would definately return.

Turkey: Bodrum or Antalya, Side,etc..??

by mangueirense

me and my boyfriend would like to do a last -minnute trip to Turkey this coming 24. 09. , for 14 days.
We found some nice pages about in the NET, but now we aren't sure where to go:
Bodrum and region
or Antalya, Alanya, Side..???

We don't want to lay down only on the beach relaxing (of course that sgould be a part of our holidays!), we want to see something from the country too!
Who has been there and can tell us which interesting place/sight-sees you can visit from Bodrum/Antalya within a day-tourand how much does it cost??

Maybe someone also has a good advice on a cool hotel there,
it should be clean and near to a beach (sand??) but not too far from a centre to go out at night...should has good oportunities with "buses",
should have a nice pool and maybe a double-room with balcony and ocean view...!

I will be glad to receive advices!

I would definitely recommend the Antalya area (look for a hotel in Kemer or Kiris). Very well located to make some interesting day excursions. I don't know about the prices, because we rented a car and visited the interesting spots (take a look at my Antalya page).
I'm convinced you will have a great trip. Turkey is wonderful!!

Re: Turkey: Bodrum or Antalya, Side,etc..??

by cachaseiro

if you decide to go to antalya but wants to get away from package tourists you can go to olympos anout 50km south of antalya.
it's a little backpacker beach where accomodation is way too primitive for the older generation and therefor only attracts the younger crowd.

I went to Side last year and was very impressed (I am going back in December this year). Nice beaches, nice people, roman amphitheatre, not far from snowcapped mountains and a bit further is Cappdocia which has fantastic scenery and underground cities.

I stayed at Hotel Arum in Side but this 5 star and very expensive.

Enjoy your visit.

Try Marmaris - right in the middle between Dalaman and Bodrum!
