These are caterpillar cacoons :)They use them to make silk. I'm not sure how they get ahold of so many, but once they do they are placed into boiling hot water and the stringy stuff they are made with is spun off with a machine and used to make silk, in order to make carpets.
It was pretty interesting, but you know me.... I'm an animal-lover, so I just felt bad for those poor caterpillars...
