A great little inn in the countryside

Of all the places we stayed during our month in Turkey, Bakkhos was one of our favorites. A small inn located in the countryside about 4 km outside Kusadasi, Bakkhos has about 10 guest rooms arranged around a swimming pool and garden. The owner and his family live in a house across the pool from the rooms and make the guests feel like part of their family.

We especially liked the dinners, which are served family-style at a long outdoor table, where the guests are encouraged to talk and get to know each other. We had a few fun late nights discussing politics, world affairs, sports, and travel ideas with people from multiple countries in a mix of English, French, Dutch, and German. The food was good, and was cooked by a chef who lives in the house next door. Each night had a different theme (grilled fish one night, kabobs another night, etc.).

The Bakkhos is very family friendly. Our daughter, who is 7, loved the swimming pool and had a few other girls to play with while we were there.

Bakkhos is located about 4 km down a country road east of Kusadasi. A dolmus bus can get you into town if you don't have a car. What we liked was that we could go into Kusadasi and over to Ephesus, and then escape from the crowds at the end of the day when we returned to Bakkhos.

Bakkhos Guesthouse

Bakkhos Guesthouse, situated in the hills about 4 kilometres outside Kusadasi, is an idyllic place in which to stay. It is set in a large garden, which is both luxuriantly overgrown and immaculately maintained, with an attractive swimming pool as its focal point and plenty of pleasant areas in which to relax. We stayed there for eleven nights, and were extremely well looked after by our hosts, Manuela (who is Dutch, as are many of the guests) and Orhan, and their staff. Amongst other things, they arranged transport to and from Izmir airport and a hire car for a few days, and they were always sources of useful information about the area.

Breakfast was usually served on an attractive terrace outside the main building, and, throughout the day, one of the 2 waitresses, one Turkish and one Dutch, would be wandering around the garden, ready to take orders for drinks or snacks. The delicious Turkish-style evening meals provided good opportunities to get to know our fellow guests and to swap stories with them, as we ate round a large table together, and Manuela and Orhan often joined us.

Although Bakkhos Guesthouse is well away from the hustle and bustle of Kusadasi, it is readily accessible by the very frequent dolmus minibuses which run along the road at the bottom of the track leading up to the guest house. Bakkhos is an excellent base for exploring the numerous historic sites and other places of interest in the area.

I had looked at this hotel earlier this year (they have a location in Kusadasi and Bodrum) but their website had expired. From what I remembered the reviews were favourable for the Kusadasi location, not so favorable for their Bodrum location.

Travel Tips for Kusadasi

Kalamaki National Park in the Dilek Peninsula

by peterdhduncan

This National Park, a few miles south of Kusadasi, is a very pleasant place to spend a day or two lazing on the beaches in the various bays, swimming and walking up the canyon footpath. However, the walk to the top is several kilometres, and we only made it as far as the 3 kilometres marker!

Bodrum makes a good day trip...

by sandysmith

Bodrum makes a good day trip or as a base to explore the coast and historical sites. Blue sea and even bluer sky, luxury yachts in the marina, easy going, fun-loving, cosmopolitan - infact the St Tropez of Turkey. The 15th century Castle of St Peter dominates the port and city and makes a worthwhile visit. At night it becomes one of the livliest discos and strobe light shows in the area and is extremely popular.

Kusadasi.

"Heaven on earth!"

Kusadasi was the first place we traveled to in Turkey, our first holiday together so it brings back good memories.
It is a very nice place and there is a lot to do and see. The weather always seems to be good, nice restaurants, shops, friendly people...you name it and they have it.
