Mosques
Several times a day the local Mosques toll their bells and a loud speaker will play out the prayer (imam) for that time of day. It can be quite a shock early in the morning but you do get used to it!

Hello!
We are coming in on a cruise ship and we would like to get a private tour to Ephesus, House of Mary and Temple of Artemision. Any suggestions on reputable tour companies in Kusadasi? We like to book off of the ship...generally they charge more on the ship, only to be clumped in with 30 other tourists on a bus.
Thank you!
Two things to keep in mind:
1. Private tours of Ephesus, House of Mary, and Temple of Artemis site will cost nearly as much as the cruise ship group booking. This is because you have to hire both a driver and a guide.
2. You will have the same time restraint as the cruise ship group, but will not be allowed to disembark first upon arrival in Kusadasi port. Group tour participants will get off the ship first, so by going alone you lose some precious time. During my cruise ship voyage last year, I did the group tour in Kusadasi and still had time to explore the town alone on foot before reboarding the ship. I thought the guides in Turkey provided by the cruise line were better than any I could have chosen by myself.
Our tour guide told us that the Temple of Artemis site has very little evidence of the ancient wonder. We spent more time at the impressive Ephesus area and only saw the Artemis site through the bus window.

A historical true story about Okuz Mehmet Pasha.
Okuz Mehmet Pasha was Grand Vezier of the Ottoman Empire between the years 1616-19. Okuz (pronounsation:Oekuez) means in Turkish Oxe. He was a good man but it was very hard to explain something to him. For that reason his classmates called him Oxe. One day while he was on the field at war and discussing about the situation with his diwan the court, an oxe looked inside the tent and said "muuuu" Every Pashas, Veziers, Beys, all laughted. Mehmet pasha was not upset. He just laughted and said. "A friend of mine came to ask me what I was doing in the middle of Donkeys"
Good joke.
He builded a caravansarai at the port of Kusadasi for all kinds of goods, animals and humans. Today the Caravansarai is a luxus international hotel.
I have stayed in many hostels before and this is by far the worst. Not only did they overcharge us but they were very dirty. The towels are dirty, the bedsheets and the toilets. The whole place smells like a wet stinking sock (to say the least) The staff are not friendly and have taken it for granted that they've been in the business for twenty years, the only reason the place is always busy is because it was mentioned once in Lonely Planet. Location is great but everything else is terrible. If you do not believe me, take one quick peak at their kitchen and you will know. Someone aught to shut that place down. There many better Hostels and Pensions which charge less and are cleaner.
