Bus to Istanbul

by smitbet

After crossing the sea of Marmara by kayak this fall I will pass Canakkale before my final day to the lighthouse at Kum Burnu near the ruins of Achilleion. My problem is how to get back to Istanbul. I know there is a plane from Canakkale but is there a bus or train? Is there some kind of transportation from somewhere near the lighthouse to Canakkale?

There are daily buses to Istanbul from Canakkale. Turkey has excellent bus service. While you're in Canakkale be sure to visit Truva (Ancient Troy).

You shouldn't worry about it, there are many buses from Çanakkale to Istanbul every day.

Enjoy it.

I can see by your replies that Canakkale to Istanbul is not a problem. The problem is from the lighthouse(channel marker) near Sehitlik to Canakkale. My guess is there is probably a tour bus that takes in Troy and other ruins including Achilleion that I could at least hitch a one way ride on. Any other ideas?
Thanks again!

WWI Reminding

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

In 1915 the western Allies sent a massive invasion force of British, Indian, Australian, and New Zealander troops to attempt to open up the strait. At the battle of Gallipoli, Turkish troops trapped the Allies on the beaches of the Gallipoli peninsula.
The 'Chanak Crisis' of 1922 centred around a British and French force stationed at Çanakkale after the defeat of the Ottoman Empire.

Canakkale - Gateway to Gallipoli

by Willettsworld

Canakkale is a large town that's located on the eastern side of the Dardanelles straits opposite the Gallipoli peninsula. The city was called "Hellespontos" or "Dardanelles" in ancient times, and there has been evidence of a settlement in the Canakkale area since 3000 BC. As the city is located on the Dardanelles/Canakkale Strait, one of the two major water passages connecting the Mediterranean and Black Sea, the area is rich in history and culture. The site of the historical city of Troy is 30km south-west of Canakkale.

During World War 1, Canakkale and the Canakkale Strait was the stage of a year-long battle between the United Kingdom, France and the Ottoman Empire. From April 1915 to January 1916, a joint British and French operation was mounted to capture the Ottoman capital of Constantinople (now Istanbul). The attempt failed, but not without heavy casualties on both sides. The town is used as a base for exploring the cemeteries and memorials of Allied and Turkish troops on the Gallipoli peninsula which can be reached by crossing the straits on a ferry. The town itself doesn't have all that much in the way of tourist sites. The main ones include a Naval Museum, the Cimenlik Fortress and an Archaeological Museum.

Cimenlik Fortress

by Willettsworld

This fantastic looking fortress (meaning Meadow Castle) was constructed by Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror for the defence of Istanbul between 1461-1462 as one of two fortresses built at the narrowest point of the Dardanelles. Later, it served as a place of dispatching troops and administration of the Central Defence Group during the Canakkale Naval Battle during the Gallipoli campaign in 1915.

It's entrance and courtyard are filled with cannon and its keep displays an exhibition on the process of the battle with the use of panels, models and videos while displaying various guns and martial materials. Entry is included in the admission of the Naval Museum.
