Which road to take from Pamukkale to Fethiye by car?

by martus

Hi all!

In a rented small car we plan to go from Izmir regoin to Pamukkale and then to Fethiye over a few days. While the road from Izmir to Pamukkale is pretty stragightforward, I have trouble selecting a route to go south. It's a mix of small roads with no apparent best choice, and the worst part is that my maps differ in what they show!
Here's what I know now:
Some guidebooks seem to advise going west through Mugla almost to Marmaris and then along the coast to Fethiye as it's the best quality road. I don't want to do it if I don't have to, because it's a great detour.
I would prefer to go through Cavdir, although I am not sure about the road quality and the exact route to take (there seems to be two)

Anybody has done it or knows how others do this route?

Cheers, Marta

They have been working on both roads but the road to Mugla is probably the better one and unsure if work has finished but had less to finish.

Hi Martha
If I was in your place I will prefer to choose the road denizli-tavas-kale-outside of mugla -koycegiz-ortaca-dalaman-fethiye instead of serinhisar-acipayam-cameli-uzumlu-fethiye
good luck

Travel Tips for Pamukkale

Pamukkale

by ania70pl

Pamukkale is one of the most extraordinary natural wonders in Turkey.
It's a city were water with limestone flows out from the source and it made stalagmite. It looks like big cover made from cotton lay on the mountain. The water is about 37 C degrees and has medicinal propriety if you stay in it few hours.

Friendly Turkish dogs

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

You can imagine how I was missing my dogs staying in Moscow! So every dog I saw in Turkey reminded me my German shepherds which were waiting for me in Moscow. This dog at the Kaklik cave seemed to be extremely friendly though he had an injured leg (pics 1-3). I saw another dog in Hierapolis (pic 4-5).

I know two Turkish breeds.
The Sivas Kangal Dog is a breed of domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris), and is the national breed of Turkey. This dog, which can grow as large as 64 kg, was originally used as a Livestock guardian dog.
Have a look here Kangal Dog.
The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is a breed of dog from Anatolia and bred for guarding flocks of sheep from wolves, bears, jackals, and even cheetahs.
Have a look there Anatolian Shepherd .

The Pools

by solopes

It is a beautiful sight from distance (smaller than expected), the white mountain with the water running slowly downwards. It is still pretty when you approach.

But don't be mistaken by the usual photos of people in the water: It's not a bathing area. The crowds follow the course of the water, here and there put their feet in a small natural pool, and it's done. And, with all those people it couldn't be otherwise.

mineral forest

by TomorrowsAngel

Calcium oxide-rich springs in a cliff almost 200 m high flow down the southern slope of Caldag located north of the ruins of Hierapolis. Over time, deposits of white travertine have built up on the plateau, creating petrified waterfalls and a series of terraced basins.

Hierapolis (Apollo Temple)

by eugini2001

In the foreground of this picture are the remains of the Apollo Temple. Its foundations date to the Hellenistic period, but the structure itself was built in the 3rd century A.D. Apollo was thought to be the city’s divine founder. The temple was built beside the plutonium, an underground cavern from which poisonous gases emerged.
