The majority of Diyarbakir population is Kurdish and there have been a few troubles in the last decades due to the activity of some separatist groups and the repression by the Turkish government. When I visited, the presence of Military Police around town was noticeable.
I believe now the situation is pretty calm and Diyarbakir is an ideal place to learn a bit about kurdish culture and habits. ** UNDER CONSTRUCTION **

We had just a very short stay in Diyarbakir. This was the inner court of a mosque and I remember, that Diyarbakir seemed to be a place much different from most of the other turkish towns. The biggest part of the population are Kurds.

Go for a walk in the old town, inside the monumental city walls. Enjoy the Kebab and dont't forget to visit the mosques. They are relaxed places if the trouble in the streets is to crazy. And last but not least, you have to go up to the city wall to enjoy the great overview. Eating to much water melons

visit the walls and walk round the top of them. They are supposed to be the largest continuous walls after the Great Wall of China, but somehow I have my doubts. Anyway, they are impressive, and are nice to walk along, although parts of the walls are within a military area, so try not to accidentally wander in there! While walking round the top, we came across a fairground which had been set up to celebrate Eid al-Adha (sorry, I don't know the Turkish name, only the Arabic...please let me know!).
