Divan Oteli: What a dump!

Arriving at night, I was forced to rely on the hotels recommended by Lonely Planet. The taxi driver didn't know where the first one was located, so he took me to Divan Oteli. A double room cost about $20, but it was very old and outdated. Not very clean, either. If LP said this one was a "step up in quality" from the first hotel on my list, I cannot imagine how filthy the other one was. There really is not a lot around the hotel for tourists. No coffee shops or anything other than a dirty market a couple blocks away. But if you cannot afford to stay at the Savon Hotel, then I guess this will have to do.

Savon Hotel: Worth the splurge

At the foot of the mountains, the Savon is a lavish boutique-style hotel. It was built in the 1860s as a soap factory, but renovations in 2001 turned it into a Spanish-style hacienda. Unfortunately, I did not stay here when I was in Antakya. I was on my way to St. Peter's Church--far from the hotel I stayed at--and needed a taxi. Knowing that most of the receptionists at hotel front desks speak English, I stopped in and asked them to call a taxi for me. While waiting for the taxi, I was amazed by the beauty of the building and its courtyard. I promised myself that if and when I returned to Antakya, I would stay here. Compared to the hotels listed in Lonely Planet, splurge and enjoy the ambiance.
