Hotel Flash: Cost-effective, comfortable & convenient

by June.b

I was actually waiting for a room at Seref Hotel but it took us long time waiting at the lobby and I was dead-tired from a 17-hour bus trip from Trabzon and we arrived at dawn in Istanbul and bide our time until 10am. We tried Seref because I had a pleasant stay there in 2009 but this time, they had us waiting and it's already around 12nn - and they didn't remember me when I stayed a week there less than a year ago only.

We went out and drag our luggages and spotted Hotel Flash just beside it, I've pass by this hotel several times in the past though I thought it was sleazy --- I was wrong.

The old man in the reception is kinda grumpy-looking but turned out to be ok. He asked us to wait until 1pm for the available room which is only less than half an hour, sure glad we did.

He gave us a room on the 4th floor (418 I think), facing the main Tarlabasi Boulevard which I really like. Although noisy at night, it was minimized when the 2 windows are closed, but the view of the city is really nice at night.

Just don't expect hotel amenities and the usual stuff and staff - only a receptionist, a lady room cleaner and a guy who'll show you to your room, period

The location is perfect, 3 minutes walk to Istiklal Caddesi - the happening street, 10 minutes to Taksim Square, 10 minutes or less to Tunnel tram. Dolmush to Aksaray that will connect you to the tram to Sultanahmet is on the other side of the road as well as those big buses.

The room is surprisingly big, beds are old but ok, unlike standard hotels which normally have either white sheets or uniformed colours, the bed sheets are in odd colours (see pics) but they change it after 2 days. Even the towels are in different shades of stripes. Much like your regular towels at home ... or not.

Odd or even... it made me feel comfortable, I had a good vibe about this hotel. I did not get the hotel-feeling, there's a sense of freedom though. It's like an apartment room but a lot better than a hostel - with in-room toilet shower and your privacy - at hostel price? The toilet shower - though clean - a slight problem with puddle of water when you start showering, the water stays on the floor, instead of flowing to the drain, which was cleaned anyway by the nice lady who make up the room in the morning.

There's an elevator, and you can leave your luggage at the lobby if your flight is in the evening. No breakfast though.

At TL 50 or EUR26 for two people - huge room, lots of space for your stuff and to move around, it can even sleep 3 - no complain. I like it - my budget love it - and I highly recommend it for people on hostel budget who needs privacy (EUR 26 for 2 is even cheaper than most hostels in Istanbul).

basic, simple, no fuss, cheap and a nice window view of the city.

Hotel Nena: Hotel Nena in istanbul

by carrysa

I loved this hotel as the staff was friendly and very helpful. The service was good as well especially from our bell boy! Nedem is truly an asset to this hotel. The view on the terrace is beautiful especially the fact that one can see the bue mosque. The rooms was clean and tidy and we were comfortable. I woud recommend this establishment to others as service and staff and of course the food which was served was great!

The view was great from the terrace and the staff that served us was great!

Hotel Sen Palas (Beyoglu/Tepebasi): Budget accom. near the tunnel

by June.b

Small friendly budget hotel located along Asmalemescit Street in Beyoglu, few meters from the main Istiklal Cadessi. The tunnel tram at the end of Istiklal is about 5 minutes walk, 10 minutes to Galata tower.

I walked in at Sen Palas hotel and they're offering their single room at Euro20 with small breakfast, not a bad deal. Very small room with single bed - not much to move around - and your own toilet/shower. More like a hostel single room but maybe a bit more comfortable and have a feeling of a small budget hotel. Lobby is clean and very inviting. Many tourist guests, geared towards international clients on budget. Good location in Beyoglu but a long distance walk from/to the main Taksim square. From the hotel though you can go to Sultanahmet easily and cheap by taking the tunnel tram then the tramvay from Karakoy that crosses the Galata bridge onto Eminonu - Sirkeci - Gulhane then Sultanahmet tram station, costs only YTL3 for both trains.

If you're on a budget and - again - want privacy of your own room and toilet, this one may fit in. Though there is a building under construction in front, so don't expect a view and maybe some noise if your room is on that side, or maybe not.

A lot of nightspots and street bars nearby, besides, Itiklal Cad. is few steps.

The staff at the reception is a nice friendly bloke. At Euro20, it's a single room rate already at a hostels.

Cheap, friendly staff, clean.

Hotel Venus (Beyoglu/Taksim): Alternative to hostel too.

by June.b

Note: Don't mistake this for the more popular Venus Hotel in Binbirdirek Mah. in Sultanahmet -- this one is the Hotel Venus along Tarlabasi Bulvari in Taksim/Beyoglu area.

----------------------------------------------------
I checked this out but did not stay (in 2010). I came back to Istanbul September 2011 and it was a peak season, most hotels are full and extremely expensive, the neighboring Flash Hotel where we've stayed before is also full and we're tired from a long bus trip, so had to get a room at Venus.

Venus hotel is located along Tarlabasi Bulvari in Beyoglu, 2 - 5 minutes walk to Istikal Cadessi.

The front of the hotel and the stairs going up to the lobby looks like it's a 2-star hotel -- the rooms are Not. Really small - no room to move around - twin room, tired, and other furnishings like the cabinet, chairs and bedside drawers are old, like the chairs were picked up from some alleys. Room carpet is also old, even the shower/toilet fixtures are starting to rust (or already), shampoo dispenser seemed like it was never refilled for a year. There's a hot shower though.

We got a room on the 4th floor facing the Tarlabasi Boulevard which I like despite of the traffic noise, close the window and it's gone. TV bolted on the wall with the usual turkish channels. The elevator wasn't reliable -- it won't open up on the 4th floor several times that we had to press 3rd to go back and get out from there and walk our way thru the stairs to 4th.

Remember though that this is a budget option for people who wants to stay in private rooms with own toilet/shower, and if you run out of place to stay. But if you're the fussy type, this place isn't for you. I wouldn't say it's better than a hostel because I've seen one hostel near the tunnel tram and although all facilities are shared, they are really clean and complimented by several conveniences like those disposable paper that cover the toilet bowl. Then again, if privacy is important to you, this place is ok for a night or two.

Location is good because it's right in the happening area of Beyoglu few minutes walk to Taksim and Istiklal Street. Many local cheap eateries around and stores. If you're not used to the area and you're new, you might feel the place to be a bit dodgy with various characters. I even felt the hotel to be a little sleazy BUT when I saw some families staying - a baby crying - and a foreign couple, I knew it's generally safe. We had our shopping bags and laptop lying around on our second and last morning we left to do a last-minute-shopping, when we came back, the bed was made up and everything was where we left it. The old man cleaning the room was nice and so are the reception guys.

Rates for twin room is Turkish Lira 70, extra charge for breakfast.

I don't totally recommend Venus Hotel but you might want to check it out, after all you get what you pay for, unless you opt for the hostel option.

Cheap and located in Beyoglu.

Tip Photo
Seref Hotel (Beyoglu/Taksim): You get what you pay for and more.

by June.b

Twas winter so maybe it's not hotels' peak season cuz I've got more than what I've paid for.

After staying at a nice - but a bit over my budget - hotel also in Taksim area, I have to move to another place as my travel friends left already and I don't want to spend more on sleeps. I checked Seref hotel as I saw it at an online hotel booking site and though mixed reviews, it's cheap and just right into my budget. Dropped by 2 days before planning to check in, small room but with clean double bed, there's a clean shower/toilet, not much to move around, but well, I don't plan to stay all day long at the hotel, besides it looks clean to me. I did checked other options too so it took me awhile to decide.

After 2 days, I decided to check in, and here's the story:

I walked in and the room is not yet available and was told to wait but I decided to visit a friend at another hotel that I did not choose - he did cuz it's cheaper. So I just left my luggage at their small office inside the lobby. I came back after an hour and was told that the room on the first floor facing the main boulevard is available, I said I prefer higher floors and that I could wait, since I was with a friend we decided to go out for lunch. I came back after a couple of hours and they finally gave me the key to the room on the last floor - I think it's 5th or 6th? - I have to get off at the elevator on the 4th and walk few stairs.

I was surprise to see a spacious room with clean double bed, basic not much of furnishings in fact just a cabinet, small tv on the wall, a chest with a mirror, and a chair which made it airy that I could even jog around (really). Newly white painted I guess as the walls are still neat. Two windows facing the view of the buildings at the back - Brit flag behind another building, must be the consulate. Hot shower/toilet is clean.

I could hear dance music from nearby bars at midnight, I closed the windows and it's no longer audible.

The only problem perhaps if you're staying alone in this big room during winter is the coldness, there's a heater near the bed but can't cope up with the size of the room. I think it's the best single room in the hotel and they gave it to me for only Euro23, no breakfast though, but at this rate and room condition, should I demand for a breakfast? Am not a breakfast person anyway.

They make up rooms daily, reception staff are ok. Strange though, visitors of the hotel guests are not permitted to go up the room, safety measures I guess.

Seref hotel is located along the main Tarlabasi Bulvari (boulevard), couple of minutes walk to Istiklal Cadessi/Galatasay Lisesi - meandering along the Balik street (fish restaurants along this street), and about 5 to 7 minutes walk to the main Taksim Square / McDonalds Taksim. This one is the best of the budget lot located in this area (Beyoglu). Safe neighborhood.

Stayed for almost a week and would recommend it for travelers on a budget who require privacy in a clean room at the most happening side of the city.

Clean room, and right into my budget.

How to get there: From Galatasaray in Istiklal Cad. walk along Hamalbasi Cadessi until the end reaching the Tarlabasi Blvd then turn right few steps the hotel is there. Or coming from Taksim walk along the Tarlabasi Blvd the side where the flower shops are, will take you about 5-7 min. passing by several other hotels - Kaya, Yonca, Venus, when u pass by the bus stop shed, ur near few meters more.

Tip Photo
Marble Hotel (Taksim): Simple and nice 4-star hotel @ Taksim

by June.b

The triple room that my friends took was a bit small-ish but enough to move around, much like the size of the twin room we got.

Warning: Don't get the room with adjoining door if you know that you're noisy or the other way around. The other room will hear your voice unless you whisper or talk moderately. We got this room and we were knocked once because of the volume of the tv and our talks during one night we went home from a bar.

Location is really good, few walk to Istiklal Cadessi and the main square and the restaurants and fastfoods just around the corner at the main square, including McDonalds, Burger King, local eateries.

Room was clean, nice small beds for twin rooms, comfortable comforters and pillows, tv with english channels, view nothing to boast of - facing the other hotel building - the hotel has 2 buildings, one along the main road, the other at the back. Maybe the rooms along the main road are more noisy, ours not.

Bathroom with tub, and the usual sopa and shampoos and clean towels.

The hotel is big-ish so staff are not really that sooper friendly but the staff at breakfast table are nice. Sit at the far right when u enter the breakfast saloon to have a view of the marmara sea. The breakfast itslef is really good, lots of choices, fresh squeeze orange juice at extra charge. Hearty.

At Euro60 for twin room - it's a comfort. This price is a walk-in rate.

Recommended.

Good breakfast, clean rooms, and great location - at the happening area near bars, clubs, food, etc...

Tip Photo
Hotel Yonca (Taksim/Beyoglu): Another Budget Hotel in Taksim

by June.b

I did not stay here, a friend did and I visited him here twice.

Very basic bigger room than other places I've seen on the shoestring budget hotel category.

Very cheap also at TL35 single / TL45 twin. Old hotel, mostly local tourists and people who are on a tight budget and don't want to share dorm rooms at hostel. No carpet so I find it a bit cold during winter, tv and a century old fridge, old but clean sheets, toilet/shower is also spacious albeit old. staff not that friendly, as usual they don't speak english but definitely not rude.

A night or two would be fine and if you really want a budget place to stay and not fussy, and always out, this is ok.

It's on the edge of the Beyoglu area - means - along Tarlabasi Blvd., but about 2 - 3 minutes walk to the main Istiklal Cadessi. Again, this is in the happening area.

Recommended only if you're on tight budget, otherwise, go for hostels if you like company and meeting other travelers. This one isn't.

Cheap.

As Hotel (Taksim/Beyoglu): Budget option, if you don't like hostels

by June.b

If you're really into a very tight budget, and you are not comfortable sharing spaces at hostels, this one might fill-in the shortcomings of a hostel.

You have your own room with your own toilet/shower. Nothing really fancy to fuss about, in fact I only stayed one night because of a friend who want me to try it , and twasn't really my idea of a comfortable stay at least within my budget during that trip, so we transferred to another hotel in the area.

Location is good, right at the happening area of Taksim/Beyoglu in one of the branch streets of Istiklal Cadessi at Sehit Muhtar Mah. Bekar Sok. No:26.

The building looks like it has been a nice one during its heydays but well it's still serving its purpose. Old elevator that you have to push the doorlock manually, I thought I got locked the first time. I got 2-single bedroom big enough for me, toilet has small basin and hotwater shower, carpet's not really clean and there's a mouldy smell in the room, small tv on the wall, suspended cabinet on the wall too, old but clean towels, bedsheets with holes from cigarrette burns.

It's pretty basic, if you're not fussy, this hotel is quite ok for TL40 or about $27 it's almost the same rate for a single shared-bathroom accommodation at a hostel. A small breakfast is even included.

Zagreb Hotel: A comfortable hotel

by Penelope4

The room was kept clean. Not too many toiletries but I consider them sufficient. Heating/Air-conditioning is not centralized and you can open the window when you need fresh air. Bathrobe and slippers provided. There's a safe in the room too (but mine did not work).

In-house steam bath and Turkish bath are very nice - for a small fee. Swimming pool may be used by guests for free.

Bar in the lobby is adequate but no fancy cocktails.

Restaurant is okay. But one must learn a little bit of Turkish or must speak Russian to be able to communicate to staff.

View from the pool is nice. It's on the rooftop.

Elegantly designed hotel.

Best Western Senator: One of Best Western Hotels in Istanbul

by Penelope4

The rooms are clean. Housemaids clean the rooms round the clock - so ask for a door sign. But even so, they still knock on your door to give towels. Buffet breakfast is average. There are two to three waiters but they don't take your empty plates right away but just go around the room. A fitness room is available, as well as jacuzzi and sauna but opening hours are from 2 pm to 10 pm. Entrance fee is Euro 10 unless you book a package (massage, Turkish bath).

Friendly staff at the reception. If you don't book the room directly with them, you can ask for a pick up car at Euro 20. Early check-in is also possible.
