I think there was an earlier post from AlperIst about this. There are Havas shuttles which take you to European side or you can take a local bus to reach Bostancı and then take a seabus. Just wait for other VT members in Istanbul to give you more detailed info.

Hi :-)

Go from Airport to Kadikoy iskele by the green bus as soon as there is one and waste your time there as you can find many places open all the night not only bars also places to eat and get a rest.

Travel Tips for Istanbul

USE A GUIDE, USE A GUIDE, USE A GUIDE!!!

by M2swim

Before my trip to Istanbul, I questioned the board on whether I should hire a guide to see Istanbul and all of its many sights. The answer I received was the best tip anyone could get. I used a local touring company (name given upon request) who suggested an itinerary very similar to that was given in a Frommer's travel guide, but the ability of a non-native visitor to easily accomplish seeing the suggested itinerary easily would have been a monumental feat! Our guide discussed the geo-political situation in Turkey, giving us insight that we wouldn't have gotten if we did it ourselves. Even with the guide, I got ripped off by a quick changing taxi driver - I didn't even notice it until about 5 minutes later. Also her insight to restaurants was invaluable.

AYASOFYA:Mimarisi, ihtiþamý,...

by tolgaturan

Bizans tarihçileri (Theophanes, Nikephoros, Gramerci Leon) ilk Ayasofya'nýn Ýmparator I. Konstantinos (324-337) zamanýnda yapýldýðýný ileri sürmüþlerdir.

Bu levhalarda, Allah, Muhammed, Ömer, Osman, Ali, Hasan, Ebu Bekir, Hüseyin'in isimleri yazýlýdýr. Mihrabýn yan duvarlarýnda ise Osmanlý padiþahlarýnýn yazýp buraya hediye ettiði levhalar vardýr.

Sultan II. Selim, Sultan III. Mehmet, Sultan III. Murat ve þehzadelerin türbeleri, Sultan I. Mahmut'un þadýrvaný, sýbyan mektebi, imareti, kütüphanesi, Sultan Abdülmecid'in hünkar mahfeli, muvakkithanesi, Ayasofya'daki Türk çaðý örnekleri olup türbeler, iç donanýmý, çinileri ve mimarisiyle klasik Osmanlý türbe geleneðinin en güzel örneklerini oluþturmaktadýr.

Müze pazartesi dýþýnda hergün 09.30-16.30 saatleri arasýnda gezilebilir.

DRINK RAKI

by Lunamagica

.... on your night out, whether at a restaurant while you're nibbling on your 'meze', or perhaps before a (preferably BESIKTAS) footy match, or at a club, I strongly recommend you try ....... Raki, the 'national' spirit..... It is an anisette based liqueur... it's GREAT! You could 'technically' drink it straight, as you'd drink a whiskey, but I strongly recommend you play it 'safe' and mix 1 part of (yeni) raki with 2-3 parts of water...... you'll see the drink will cloud up and resemble skimmed milk....DELICIOUS!

Yedikule ( Seven Towers )

by SamiGuzel

Guides r missing this amazing architectural. It s open daily and don't miss yedikule.

The Yedikule city gate is located along the 5,632 meter-long land walls, which start at the end of the sea walls. It is one of the main entrances to the city. Over the gate, there is the double-headed eagle of Byzantium.

The sea walls

by leics

Ancient indeed, dating from 439AD and built (not in person!) by Cyrus, prefect of the East.

Theodosius later extended them so that they met with the land-side walls he had had constructed, and all the walls were rebuilt in the 9th century.

But these sea-walls are in a sad way really. Some parts were destroyed when the railway was uilt, many other parts are in disrepair and/or covered with vegetation.

But it is worth seeking them out, for they still give an indivcation of just what a proud and implressive city Istanbul once was.

Get to Cankurtaran railway station (about 10 minutes downhill walk from Topkapi) and just walk along the wild Kennedy Caddesi (wild in terms of traffic). Walk away from the station towards tha airport...away from the city, if you like.

You'll see an arch here, a stretch of overgrown wall there, some restored bits with added crenellations (totally wrong, by the way), some indications of where watchtowers once stood...

Despite the noise and fumes of the traffic, walking this stretch of walls is an evocative indication of what Istanbul once was.
